Packard Super Eight Victoria Specifications IV. This Particular Packard - Overall Condition - Mechanical condition - Cosmetic condition V. Driving the Packard VI. Miscellaneous Information VII. Purchasing a Collector Car - Things to Consider VIII. About Classic Cars Ltd. I. PACKARD - HISTORY Packard was founded by James Ward Packard (Lehigh University Class of 1884), his brother William D. Packard and their partner, George Lewis Weiss, in the city of Warren, Ohio. James Ward Packard believed that they could build a better horseless carriage than the Winton cars owned by Weiss (an important Winton stockholder) and, being a mechanical engineer, had some ideas for improvement on the designs of current automobiles. From the very beginning, Packard automobiles introduced a number of innovations in its designs, including the modern steering wheel and, years later, the first production 12-cylinder engine and the first air-conditioning in a passenger car By the end of WWII, Packard was in excellent financial condition but several management mistakes became ever more visible as time went on. Like other US auto companies, Packard resumed civilian car production in late 1945 as '46 models modestly updating their 1942 models. Although the postwar Packard's sold well, the ability to distinguish expensive models from lower-priced models disappeared as all Packard's, whether sixes or eights, became virtually alike in styling. Further, amidst a booming seller's market, management had decided to direct the company more to volume middle-class models, thus concentrating on selling lower-priced cars instead of more expensive - and more profitable - models. The Clipper, although a graceful classic automobile, became outdated as the new envelope bodies started appearing led by Studebaker and Kaiser-Frazer. Had they been a European car maker, this would have meant nothing; they could have continued to offer the classic shape not so different from the later Rolls Royce with its vertical grill. But in America it was all about keeping up, style wise. So, in 1948, Packard presented its first postwar body - prior to its competition from the major firms (Cadillac, Lincoln, and Chrysler). In reality, these cars were heavily face-lifted Clippers. The design chosen was of the "bathtub" style, predicted during the war as the destined future of automobiles, and most fully realized by the 49/50 Nash. Six-cylinder cars were dropped for the home market, and a convertible was added. The new design cleverly hid its relationship to the Clipper. Even that name was dropped, for a while. But it looked bulky, and a bulky nickname it got: the "pregnant elephant". When a new body style was added, Packard made the mistake of introducing a station wagon instead of a 2-door hardtop as buyers requested. Test driver for Modern Mechanix, Tom McCahill, referred to the newly designed Packard as "a goat". Packard left the luxury car market silently through the back door, relinquishing the market to Cadillac. Although it shone again in the mighty Custom Clippers and Custom Eights, built in its old tradition with excellent craftsmanship and only the best materials, Packard outsold Cadillac until about 1950; the problem was that most sales were the mid range lines, the volume models. A buyer of a Super Eight paying premium dollars did not enjoy seeing a lesser automobile with nearly all the Super Eight's features, with just slight distinction in exterior styling. Retaining the award-winning styling of the previous year's models, 1948 Packard's were available in Standard, Super and Custom trim levels. Packard's in the Super series were powered by a 327-cubic inch straight-eight engine that produced 150 horsepower, making them ideal long-distance tow vehicles. A total of 59,390 Packard's built in 1948 with fewer than 5,000 convertibles being manufactured. Packard's body design for 1948 - it's Golden Anniversary year - was labeled by the company as new, but it had actually been introduced a year earlier. It was a big departure from previous Packard designs and an answer to Cadillac's fresh, new P-38-inspired tail fins. The base Packard convertible carried a factory base price of $3,350; an estimated 4,750 cars were sold in 1948. II. WHAT DO THE EXPERTS SAY ABOUT THE PACKARD? III. THIS PARTICULAR PACKARD VICTORIA CONVERTIBLE This Packard comes to us, as do the majority of our cars, as a result of a referral from one of our good friends that we have known for years. He has owned a number of "cars of interest" over the years and has a wide range of interests. He consistently own exceptional, well cared, high end vehicles and this lovely, unique Packard convertible is no exception. Those that have familiarity with Packard models of the 1950's will recognize this example as the Super Eight convertible. As the author of the Illustrated Packard buyer's Guide, Richard M. Langworth states in his book;"The Packard convertible) was the most solidly constructed convertible in the industry, the car that other makers tore apart when they wanted to know "How it was done." Additionally, the Packard offers Packard's superb engineering and, as a result of the high level of "creature comforts", represents a very usable specialty vehicle. So, why is the Packard for sale? Well, the owner struggled with offering the car for sale but a number of realities have led him to the conclusion that it is time to let the Packard go to another "Caregiver." The primary reason has to do with his recent move out of the state and his inability to take all of his cars to his new location. Additionally, he finds that his schedule and family commitments simply do not provide him with the opportunity to enjoy the Packard. So, as opposed to not being able to use the car as much as he would like, he has decided to reduce the size of his collection. This Packard was purportedly restored in California and has documentation, including repair history, in Santa Ana, CA. Just a few years ago, the car moved with its owner to Hawaii where the car was immediately placed into a climate controlled, de-humidified fully enclosed environment. As the undercarriage and exterior photographs the car has remained free from rust and has the appearance consistent with a car that we refer to as a "California Condition Car." The Packard is in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition and represents a usable and highly unique collector car. The car would be well received at any local classic cars show where you would almost certainly be the only one that shows up in a 1948 Packard convertible. Titled as a 1949, the car has a clear, transferrable title in the name of the current owner. The VIN # (consistent with the VIN # on the plate on the driver's side inner engine area) is 2279911286. The title also shows "Date Sold New" as 1949. However, our research and, based on the descriptions and photographs in the Illustrated Packard Buyer's Guide" by Richard M. Langworth indicates the car is definitely a 1948 Packard convertible. Specifically, page 95 shows a photograph of a 1948 Super Eight convertible with the following details: - Front wrap around bumper - Lower chrome trim strip (along rocker panel) - Front flush mounted Packard emblem - Front Packard hood ornament (on several years / models) - Flush rear mounted tail lights - Chrome belt line molding extending from the front door to the rear The changes to the 1949 model included "Packard" emblems on the front fenders, a chrome trim strip added down the middle of the body and tail-lights that protruded from the body. While these changes do not affect the actual body, they clearly distinguish the 1948 from the 1949 model. This car does not have the 1949 characteristics. It was not uncommon in this era to have vehicles titled in a year subsequent to the year of the car. In other words, a 1948 Packard may have been in dealer inventory and sold as a 1949. Considering the vintage of the Packard and the fact that it has, apparently, been titled this way for many years we surface this as a matter of fact, not concern. Frankly, considering the fact that the car is close to 65 years of age it is impossible to determine what actually occurred. Again, the title is clear and the numbers on the vehicle and title match. The Packard will be delivered to its new owner with the following documents / items: Car cover Packard manuals / literature including: ? Packard Service Manual ? Packard Illustrated Buyer's Guide ? Packard International Motor Car Club Magazines (Technical information and parts sources) ? Packard Parts & Interchange Manual ? Packard "History & Development" Brochure (Car Production Information, etc.) PACKARD - OVERALL CONDITION MECHANICAL CONDITION A recent complete independent inspection of the Packard not only confirms that the required California safety equipment is in place but also that the car is very mechanically strong. Mechanically, the Packard Convertible runs and drives without issue. The engine is very smooth and the larger, 327.ci. engine provides excellent drivability and performance for a vehicle of this vintage and size. The Packard starts immediately whether hot or cold and is free from major leaking and overheating. The car idles incredibly smoothly and quietly and it is difficult to even hear the engine when the car is in motion! The transmission shifts very smoothly and there are absolutely no issues with shifting up though the gears or down-shifts. The clutch engages smoothly and without chatter. The Packard was one of the premier luxury cars of this era and, unlike most cars came equipped with some very advanced and desirable options. The Packard Super Eight Victoria has power windows, a power top, power seat and poser steering and brakes. All of these items are hydraulically operated and fully functional. The cars were very advanced and the high build quality (and restoration effort) has resulted in these systems continuing to work fine after 60+ years. The Packard is also fitted with the innovative and very progressive Overdrive that is fully operational. The OD is functional in all three gears although it is impractical to utilize the Overdrive in first gear. The Packard also has the "Electromatic Clutch" allowing the car to be driven using the "EMC" and not requiring use of the clutch pedal at stops or when shifting. This too if functional and was very advanced in 1948. The lighting system is functional and inside the car, as is typical, the clock and radio do not work although they are totally stock as are all of the other instruments in the car. The speedometer and odometer are operational and the key gauges appear to read accurately. The heater is disconnected in the engine compartment. However, in terms of the cars configuration, it remains virtually 100% stock except for updated "soft items" such as the interior and top. Even the interior lighting still works! The car has turn signals, high and low beam lights, dash lights, etc. The car has the appearance (the exterior, engine bay and underside) of being used minimally since the restoration. As the photographs of the underside reveal, the underside of the car is clean and free from damage, rust and no suggestions of previous repair of accidents. We encourage a review of the photos as the old adage "A photo is worth a thousand words" clearly applies in this instance! An inspection of the cars other mechanical systems (within the past 30 days) found the brakes (completely re-done) to be excellent and stop the car straight and sure. There are no major signs of leaking (outside of the normal "seeping" that is characteristic with the vintage) and the car remains very clean and dry underneath. The power steering is excellent and the tile wheel functional. The car has a new exhaust system that emits a pleasing exhaust note. The car is currently licensed and registered and, of course, carries a free and clear title. The Packard's file contains a number of extensive repair / maintenance records that reflect the care that the car has received over the years. Specifically, the following should be noted: Within the previous 100 miles: ? New exhaust system ? Flush cooling system ? Drain brake fluid check and adjust ? Check timing / tune car ? Adjust automatic choke ? Check oil pressure (Normal) ? Complete safety check Within the previous 1,500~ miles: ? Complete brake system rebuild (including master cylinder, wheel cylinder rebuild, repack wheel cylinders, new brake hoses ? Electrical repairs to turn signals ? New electric fuel pump ? Rebuild electric top motor ? Repair wipers Total bill = $5,670.25 (Just for the work within 1,500 miles!) Within 2,000~ miles" ? Minor oil service and fluid checks Within approximately 4,000 miles" ? Complete major service (tune-up, valve adjustment, carburetor rebuild, timing adjustment, etc.) ? Tires rotated and wheel bearings re-packed ? All fluid levels checked / filled COSMETIC CONDITION This Packard Victoria convertible represents a beautiful example of a desirable "Bathtub" Packard. We have not seen a Packard of this vintage in a long, long time and we are reminded of why Packard was recognized by aficionados as a premier automobile manufacturer. Every part of the car is of the highest quality and the restoration, while older, suggests that the car was completely restored by someone that knows Packard's. As we often say "The Devil is in the Details" and the attention to detail on this restoration rates high. The overall condition of the Packard is excellent and the car remains free from any major body damage or damage to the exterior trim / brightwork. It is apparent that the car has been very well cared for over the course of many years and, based on the file documentation, received the benefit of "cost no object" care that has resulted in it remaining in beautiful condition. The cars color combination is especially attractive with the exterior finished in a very appropriate, period correct dark blue and a contrasting red interior. The convertible top and the rear boot cover are white for a nice accent. The Packard is fitted with wide whitewalls and, of course proudly displays the Pelican hood ornament immediately identifying the car as a Packard The Packard's odometer mileage shows as 15,385 miles and, while the odometer and speedometer are functional we are unable to accurately state the cars mileage. It is possible that the mileage was turned back to zero when the car was restored but this would be pure conjecture on our behalf and we have no specific information to support this fact. An inspection of the Packard's exterior reveals virtually no significant body damage, rust or noticeable, significant imperfections. There are the normal nicks, chips and imperfections that result from a vehicle being used but, as the photos indicate, these minor flaws in no way detract from the overall appeal or charm of the car. The panel fit is very good on the hood (that opens sideways to access the driver's side or passenger side), trunk and doors. There is a slight "droop" when the driver's side door s opened but the doors close solidly and securely. As a result of the Packard's minimal use and little / no exposure to the elements, the Victoria has good paint that is free from serious blemishes, orange peel or signs of poor / low quality preparation. Of course, the car has been garaged for the last several decades of its life and received regular professional detailing to ensure that he Packard looked its best at all times for its proud original owner. The exterior trim is equally as good with no damage to the bumpers that show extremely well and shine like new. The Packard rides on factory correct size "wide whites" and the stock size wheels and hubcaps. The rear fender skirts are in place, the optional reverse light is fitted and the other exterior trim on the car is in lovely condition The complete interior has been re-done with in a solid "Blood Red" color that is befitting the car. Everything in the interior is in very good condition including the carpet, seats, door panels, trim, dash and all other parts of the inside cabin. The photos show the power window and seat switches and all of which are functional. In fact, the windows raise and lower quickly and the chrome surrounding the glass is excellent. The old adage "A photograph is worth 1,000 words" applies when it comes to the photos of the interior. The car has front mats protecting the carpet and the Packard logo mats in the front that are in excellent condition along with rear carpeted mats. Also included are the following: V. DRIVING THE PACKARD The Packard is an absolute pleasure to drive. The unique car runs and drives very well. The recent inspection confirms the mechanical strength of the Packard and the ongoing preventive maintenance has been completed in an attempt to minimize any future mechanical issues. "In the Day" Packard used the motto "Ask the Man Who Owns One" and we can fully appreciate this marketing strategy after spending time in the Packard. We have driven a large number of vintage cars but the Packard truly represent a bygone era when quality was high and American cars represented some of the "best of the Best." We would describe the driving experience as smooth and effortless. Additionally, the Packard was quick, quiet and comfortable. We have been told that the Victoria convertible with its 327c.i. inline engine is also fitted with 4.09 gears which, when combined with the overdrive transmission. Finally, we not only like the exterior proportions of the Packard but love the creature comforts (power windows, seats, steering, brakes, and power top) and sheer size of the car. It's a car that the entire family can enjoy and we simply can't think of a more unique and comfortable cruiser for those beautiful evenings or car shows! We must offer one warning. If you are not friendly or do not like to answer questions about your car, this may not be the car for you. This car draws attention like crazy! The comments range from "What is it" to "I love the hood ornament" and countless others. The Packard is great fun and carries on a tradition of American excellence. The Packard is a wonderful Classic that is great fun to drive and bee seen in. It is the faithful partner that you've been looking for, will enjoy on your first date, and never tire of. VI.
