Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a nice running, very solid and rare 1972 GMC Jimmy. This Jimmy is nicely equipped with working four wheel drive (manual front locking hubs), automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, and AC. These GMC Jimmys are much rarer than their Chevy Blazer counterparts; I have not found production numbers for the '72 Jimmy 4x4, but they are reported to have produced about a third as many Jimmy 4x4s as Blazer 4x4s, of which they made just over 44k in 1972. Accordingly, re-sale values are a bit higher for Jimmys of the era than for Blazers: the NADA Classic value on 1972 GMC Jimmy 4x4 with AC is $7,203 - $29,130 (low to high retail). 1972 was a great year for GM trucks, and marks last year of one of their best series. I bought this Jimmy in August 2009 as a project I could drive and have fun with while restoring. It's still a running, driving project; I simply don't have the time to devote to restoring it and I need the space for other projects. This Jimmy has never seen a New England winter. It spent its entire life in the southwest (Nevada and California), before I purchased it and shipped it to Georgia, where it was garaged until this spring when I shipped it to my home in NY. Apart from oil changes, some tranny fluid, and a battery, it's been trouble free. The ride is a bit harsh, but that's to be expected with live axle leaf spring suspension front and rear. The 4x4 system works well. The original owner's manual and warranty book (with metal Protect-o-plate in the original owner's name) come with the Jimmy. As well, the original Service Parts Identification decal, which details all the original options and specifications, is still affixed to the inside of the glove box door (see photos). Condition: Please see my youtube channel, BellmouthRacing, for a driving video (from 9/30/12) of this Jimmy. The odometer has turned over. It currently reads 02356 miles. Repair receipts from the 2000s show mileage going from the 60k's to the 90k's; it had just turned over when I purchased it in 2009. Based on the condition of the frame, I assume the mileage is 102,356 (not 202,356), but who knows what the actual mileage is? I can't say for sure. Interior - The interior is tired but all the major bits are there including the center console, rear seat (not bolted down), original bucket seats, etc. The driver's door is missing the window crank handle and the vent window. The window raises (and stays) and lowers if you pull it up or push it down, and the splined nub for the crank turns...but the crank handle itself is missing. A pair of used quarter window frames is included, one of which has the quarter window installed. Lights all seem to work except the brights (switch works though and beam changes, but the inside headlights do not come on), the left rear side marker light, and the blinkers. The blinker stalk (included) is not screwed in, so the blinkers may or may not work. The rear window lock does not work. Temp gauge does not work, although the engine never runs hot. Speedo and odometer work perfectly. Gas gauge pretty much stays around a quarter tank no matter the fuel level. A prior receipt notes that the gauge is inoperable. Carpeting is old and faded. Vinyl seating surfaces are cracked and split, but appear to be the originals underneath the seat covers. Dash pad is faded and cracked. There's one key for the ignition and door locks, which work perfectly. There's a removable Pioneer CD/stereo unit and some 6x9s in the back, but the radio hasn't worked while I've had the truck. Like the interior lights, it could just be a fuse, which I will check this week. Driver's side inside door panel is a bit loose. Body & Frame - As the pictures attest, the Jimmy's frame is super solid and clean...no scale or rot! The body is rusted through in the usual locations for Jimmys and Blazers (at the bottom, just behind the doors where water drains down from the removable top), plus one small spot below the front of the passenger door and a couple of spots along the top edge of the bed where the top mounts (see photos). The frame and the rest of the body are super solid, including the radiator support and the cowl area. The clear coat on the hood is oxidizing a bit, as can be seen in the photos. The paint seems pretty old, and the rust spots that are there haven't changed in the three years I've owned it. There's no evidence on the frame of an accident or any significant rust or scale. The weather stripping is dried out and very brittle. The removable fiberglass top is complete, although the interior lights do not work. It is chipped in a couple of places, and the right side glass is cracked (see photo which combined the chip on the lid with the cracked glass). The tailgate is very nice and the open and close mechanism works perfectly. Both doors have mounting holes for the "Custom" trim emblems, but I only have one emblem and it's just sitting in its holes (i.e. not glued). The paint is chipped in a few places (see photos). Front grill and bumper are very nice (only mild surface rust around the passenger side headlight surround). The rear bumper has some surface rust along the top edge and is bent in a bit above the trailer hitch (ball not included). Engine & Transmission - The engine long block was replaced with a newly rebuilt one (350 cid) in late-2006, approximately 11k miles ago (receipt totals $2125). The transmission (a TH350) was rebuilt 30k miles ago (receipt totals $1100). Radiator was replaced 10k miles ago (w/ receipt). The Q-Jet carb was rebuilt at the time of the engine work, with receipt. The tranny leaks fluid, especially if not used for a period of time. The engine maintains strong oil pressure, starts easily, idles well and restarts easily after warmed. It sounds like there's an exhaust leak sometimes (when cold) on the right side of the engine, and a pair of new exhaust donut seals are included. The bellhousing lower cover is missing, apparently due to the installation of a rounded snout starter at some point, which did not work with the stock cover. Engine power is what I would call "adequate." This is not a speed demon, but it cruises comfortably at 70mph no problem. Brakes & Suspension - Power brakes work great, including the emergency brake. No issues, no pulling. Front ball joints will need replacing at some point. Air conditioning - Everything is there but there's no belt on the compressor...I don't know if it works or not, although there's a decal saying the system was converted to R134a, so it received some attention in the not too distant past. Tires - Nearly new Goodyear Wranglers, size 30x9.5 R15. When I say nearly new, I mean they have less than 100 miles on them. These were nearly $800, installed a few weeks ago. Rims are newer-style GM truck rallys. Terms and conditions:The Jimmy is sold on a clear GA title in my name. I will make myself available to meet with the sellers shipper of choice. No warranty is expressed or implied; it is being sold without warranty of any kind. This is a running and driving project truck, so don't expect to commute in it day to day without giving it some TLC. That said, I drove it 100 miles today while filming the video, with no issues, and would encourage a winning bidder to drive it home if it's within reason. In fact, I will deliver it within 100 miles for a nominal fee. I have tried to describe it as best I can, but it's always possible to miss things, so I encourage you to ask me any questions you might have and to inspect the Jimmy yourself if that's at all possible. Your bid is a commitment to buy, not an option to buy, so please inspect the Jimmy or ask any questions you might have before you bid. Check my feedback and bid with confidence. This would make a fantastic restoration candidate or a reliable driver. Good luck!
