BMW 1975 520i E12 – New Zealand right hand drive model-rarely available. I’ve owned this car for nearly 20 years and for most of that time it has been my daily drive. However in the last 3 years it has had only occasional use. It is in very original order except for the gearbox which is a 5 speed from a later model. It is the very first shape 520i and was built in April 1975. The car has travelled a total of 302,917 kilometres (188,223 miles). It’s been a privilege to be the custodian of such beautiful looking car. I would really like to see it go to someone else who would care for it, appreciating the aesthetic beauty of this key piece of BMW history. Over the time I have owned the car it has been well cared for. The engine was completely rebuilt in late 1997: · The crankshaft was rebuilt; · The engine block rebored; · New pistons, rings and gudgeons fitted. · The head was also fully reconditioned with hardened valve seats for non leaded petrol and a new water pump installed. This work was carried out with 215,700 kilometres (134,029 miles) on the clock. Since that time it has travelled 87,217km (54,194 miles). Oil and oil filters have been changed every 4-5mths and the car doesn’t burn any appreciable oil between changes. I have always used genuine BMW parts for all work done on the car including the oil filters. Over the years a considerable variety of other maintenance work has been done. The rust was cut out of all 4 doors with no expense spared as they were re-metalled to the original profiles as you can see in the photographs. The brakes have been completely overhauled with the rear drums re-machined. The gearbox was replaced in 2004 with a later model 320i 5 speed. The speedometer had to be replaced with an electronic one to work with the new gearbox. I have the original speedo and all mileages recorded accurately. At the same time the heater completed overhauled. It has also had a new thermostat, new distributor cap, new rotor arm and new capacitor. The starter motor has also been completely overhauled. In the last three years it has had: · New rear brake shoes; · A new water pump; · The radiator reconditioned; · New alternator mounting bracket; · The hot and cold running on the Kugelfischer fuel injection adjusted; · Two new rear sub frame mounting bushes; · And the drive shaft repaired. The paint work is mostly original with the exception of the work done on the doors. The paint is partially faded on the top of the bonnet, roof and boot and has a worn patinaed look. There are a couple of very minor dents and the underside of both bumpers have some rust in patches. I had always intended to have the body work completely done with new paint but for various reasons haven’t done it. The interior is completely original but has been upgraded with rear seat belts fitted. The driver’s seat could do with re-padding and re-springing. The car still has its original tool kit but unfortunately the mounting bracket is broken. It also has the original owners manual in its original plastic cover and glove box torch which works. I also have an OWM 520i Owners Workshop manual for the car. There are a number of spare parts including spare water hoses, hubcaps, various bits and pieces and a power steering unit for this model car. The car is in New Zealand and buyer will need to arrange for shipping, but happy to assist.
