Frey and championed by Ford Division general manager Lee Iacocca, the Mustang prototype was a two-seat, mid-engine roadster. This would later be remodeled as a four-seat car penned by David Ash and John Oros in Ford's Lincoln-Mercury Division design studios, which produced the winning design in an intramural design contest suggested by Iacocca. When introduced in April, 1964 the Mustang caused quite a stir. The car was designed by Ford to compete with sports cars of Chevrolet, Dodge, Chrysler and Plymouth in the market for affordable sports cars with a wide range of power. The first Mustang had three engine choices ranging from a small, six cylinder engine producing just over 100 horsepower, to larger horsepower V-8 engines with various horsepower ratings. Also available were a variety of transmission options including three speed manual, automatic, and the fully automatic "C4" for those that were interested in cruising with their "Favorite Gal"! In the early years of the Ford Mustang, the car was only available as a Coupe or fastback. When first introduced, $2400.00 would buy a standard Mustang and for twice that amount you could purchase a top-of-the-line car with upgraded interior, exterior trim and larger V-8 engine. The Mustang was so successful that the car sold 22,000 units on the first day and over 100,000 cars were sold within the first four months. Nearly 20,000 Mustangs were sold by the end of the first year. 1965 FORD MUSTANG FASTBACK SPECIFICATIONS - Wheelbase: 108 in. - Length: 181.6 in. - Width: 68.2 - Curb Weight: Less than 3000 lbs. The total number of cars produced equaling 680,000+. Fastback production did not begin until 1965 and represented just over 11%~ of the total Mustangs produced in 1964/1965 making them rare in 1965 and especially desirable today, some 45+ years later. It is also important to note that this 1965 Mustang was produced built in the Ford plan that was literally in our "Backyard", just 30 miles from our enclosed showroom location. The car retains its original equipment along with a few aftermarket upgrades/convenience items that improve its drivability and appearance. It is offered in its factory original color combination and has remained devoid of many of the irreversible modifications that were performed on so many Mustang fastbacks over the years. The car is very nicely equipped and offers the following features: - 289cid V8 engine "C" code - Automatic floor mounted shift transmission - Air Conditioning (functional and freezing cold!) - Power steering - Front fog lights (functional) - Rear exhaust "trumpets" and correct rear valance exit - "Mustang" AM/FM cassette player (in dash unit) - "Pony" Seats - Fold down rear seat - Chrome door sills - Mustang spinner hubcaps and whitewalls The base price of a Mustang was $2,614.00 with added options as follows: - Honey Gold paint (no charge) - 289 c.i. V8 engine (+$108.00) - Accent group (+$27.70) - Closed emission system (=$5.30) - Back up lamps (+$5.30) - 5 x 695 x 14 Whitewall tires (+$33.90) - Power steering (+$86.30) - AM radio (+$58.50) - Deluxe belts & tinted glass (+$38.45) - Padded visors (+$5.70) THIS PARTIUCLAR 1965 FORD MUSTANG - HISTORY We are the first to acknowledge that there are a number of Mustang's available in the market today. However, it is increasingly difficult to locate an example that truly qualifies as a California "Survivor." Additionally, locating a nicely optioned car, straight car with no indications of damage and signs of excellent maintenance can present a real challenge. While the Mustang has always been very well maintained and using appears what appears to be a "Cost No Object" philosophy, during the past several years the car has been used less and less and was finally offered for sale by its most recent owner. Considering the vintage of the Mustang the actual mileage is difficult to document. However, the odometer currently reads 29,297 and the condition of the car suggests that the mileage may well be 129,297. While we cannot substantiate the mileage, we would not be surprised, based on the cars cosmetic and mechanical condition if the car has low mileage. However, we must represent it as "mileage unknown" since we do not have documentation that dates back to the cars original owner over 45 years ago. A recent California required safety inspection supports that the car has been well maintained including recent brakes, steering components, replacements transmission & rear end and other maintenance items. It is apparent not only from above the car but from underneath that the car has received a high level of care from its long term owners. We always find it very refreshing (and unusual) to find a collectible Mustang that has been this well cared for after 45+ years. COSMETIC CONDITION - BODY / PAINT / TOP The Mustang fastback is finished in the desirable and lovely shade of "Honey Gold", an especially attractive color on a fastback 2+2 and in contrast with the black interior. Unlike some of the "flashy" colors from the 1960's, this car has an elegant, understated look that is well received by virtually everyone that sees the Mustang 2+2. To say that this car has been babied for its entire life would be an understatement. This Mustang 2+2 has the appearance of a well cared vehicle and while the restoration was completed several years ago, the car has been used as a weekend "occasional car" and parked in the garage when not in use. The paint is in very nice condition with a bright shine and is devoid of "orange peel", fading or other significant flaws. Of course, the car does have a few minor cosmetic imperfections, none of which detracts from its overall appearance or charm The car appears to have had the benefit of one complete, high quality re-paint in its factory original color of Honey Gold (as documented on the door trim tag). When the car was repainted, much of the trim was removed (and replaced as needed) and, as a result, no signs of overspray are apparent. An independent inspection of the Mustang revealed indicated no significant body damage or issues with the suspension. Perhaps most important, the car was found to be totally (and unusually so, especially for a mid 60's 2+2) free from any signs of rust in the floors, rocker panels, fenders, engine bay, trunk and other typical rust prone areas. Please refer to the detailed photographs of the underside of the car. The frame was also found to be totally straight and damage free. The lack of undercarriage structural damage supports the owner's report of "no accidents." As the photos reflect, this Mustang has a straight, damage free body. Any minor flaws / imperfections are just that, minor. In fact, it takes a very critical assessment of the body to seek out the minor imperfections that are inherent on even the nicest vehicles that are used on the street. However, any minor chips, scratches and flaws are difficult to spot and, frankly, would be unnoticeable to the vast majority of the prospective buyers. It is important to note, however, that the car is totally free from any major dents, dings or damage on the body, bumpers and exterior trim. The Mustang fastback is a striking car and we are continually asked if the car was the subject of a recent restoration. The panel fit, including the doors, trunk, and hood are excellent, especially for a mid 1960's Mustang fastback. The doors close solidly, line up well and close with a solid "thud" and are totally free from the "sagging" that can exist, especially on 1960's vintage production cars. The trunk and hood are well aligned considering the vintage of the vehicle and both open and close properly. The trunk also seals well having had the benefit of new seals when the car was repainted and has a fully functional lock (with two sets of keys included). The front hood and trunk have never been forced closed on any objects, so there are no dents in either panel. Both trunk and hood stay open as a result of proper ongoing maintenance. The remaining exterior trim on the car is equally as good as the paint and body. The front and rear bumpers are straight and the chrome is very good. The other exterior trim (chrome and otherwise) is in excellent condition and free from excessive / noticeable wear / damage. This car clearly reflects its "suburban" environment and occasional use since it is totally free from door dings and other parking rash that we see on urban vehicles. The front windshield is in very good condition with no cracks, stars or chips. The car is fitted with the old style (correct for the era), aluminum windshield wipers and arms. The remaining window glass is excellent with no damage, cracks or stars. The windows roll up freely and the chrome trim surrounding the windows is excellent, free from pitting and even the slightest surface rust. INTERIOR The interior on the Mustang is in lovely condition and consistent with the condition of the exterior. The Mustang's interior is basically stock but has been upgraded over the years with replacement materials and a few added "Creature Comforts." An aftermarket Mustang logo radio fits in the stock dash opening (dashboard not cut) and the original radio speaker has been retained. The interior is finished in materials that are period correct and is all black with chrome / silver trim. The front seats have the "Pony" trim complete with the embossed black on black Mustang logos. The entire interior appears to have been redone at some point but factory similar materials have been used to retain a totally stock appearance. The carpeting, dash, seats, door panels, and all other interior items are all original style and in excellent condition. The seats show virtually no wear and are in excellent structural condition. There are no rips, tears or cracks on any of the interior panels, or dash. Even the driver's side seat bolster shows no wear, tear or damage. Because of the limited use of the Mustang by its careful owner's, the interior does not show the usually wear seen on your average Mustang. Additionally, we often see Mustang 2+2's that have been heavily modified with engine changes, incorrect wheels, incorrect steering wheels and even body modifications (wheel well flares, etc). Not so with this car. The dash is totally free from any sun wear or cracks. The gauges are all original and functional, and the lenses are clear, not cracked, or damaged. The gauges all read within acceptable ranges. The current reading on the odometer is 29,297 and the car can be expected to have up to up to a few hundred additional miles before its sale (as a result of showing the car to local, prospective buyers and our occasional use, especially as the weather warms up!). The rear cargo seating area, carpeting and panels are also in excellent condition. As produced in 1965, the Mustang was not required by law to have seat belts. However, this car is fitted with front and rear seat belts for safety. The carpeting is excellent front and back and the entire folding seat is in excellent condition and free from all but minor scratches. MECHANICAL CONDITION Within the previous 100 miles the car was inspected by an independent mechanic who found a few minor issues that were immediately addressed. His overall assessment of the Mustang revealed that it had excellent "Bones" and was a very well maintained, solid example that showed an unusually high "Pride of ownership." This particular Mustang runs and drives very well, indeed. We have had the pleasure of owning and driving a large n umber of Mustangs and must say that, from a mechanical standpoint, this particular car is as good as any that we have had in recent memory. According to history that we have on the car, the engine received a complete rebuild which accounts for the cars excellent performance. The car does not have the typical leaking that we see on so many mid-60's cars, runs cool, sounds great and starts immediately whether warm or cold. In fact, a turn of the key and the car comes to life almost before you can fully engage the ignition! The automatic, console mounted transmission makes the car a pleasure to drive. The transmission shifts smoothly and without slippage or noise. There are no unusual noises in the transmission, rear end, or drive-line. The car is not a "leaker" nor does it smoke or exhibit any mechanical issues. The recent service to the brakes and suspension result in a car that not only steers and stops well but also exhibits no drivability issues. The tires are a matching set of Michelin radials. Older Mustang's (and other collectibles, for that matter) are often times plagued with a variety of "Gremlin's" that can result in some items being non functional. Our experience tells us that a car with a number of non working items has not been well cared for by its owner and repairs can be costly. It is refreshing to see a 1965 Mustang where everything works including the following" - Air conditioning - Lights - Parking Lights - Bright Lights - Turn Signals - Brake Lights - Heater, Blower & Heater Fan - Interior Lighting - AM/FM In Dash Radio - Dash Lighting - Reverse Lights The Mustang's engine compartment is very original and, with the exception of an upgraded chrome air cleaner and chrome "dress-up" valve covers has a totally stock appearance. It is important to note that he car does not have any of the high performance additions that often times detract (IOHO) from the originality of the early Mustangs. This Mustang will clearly be of interest to collectors / enthusiasts that are looking for a rare, Mustang fastback that has had the benefit of limited owners and was original delivered (and remained) in sunny California. The car is completely and totally reliable, probably in large part due to the care that it has received from its careful owners. With continued care it is certain to provide the new owners with the same kind of reliability and pleasure for many, many more miles. MISCELLANEOUS - The Mustang has the original lug wrench, spare tire / wheel and comes with a jack - We are often times asked if we would drive a particular car a long distance. Personally, we would not hesitate to drive this particular car across country (and enjoy every minute of the trip on Route 66!) Please note the requirements listed below for out of state buyers / drivers. Imperfections may include, but are not limited to, minor paint flaws, minor wheel scrapes, and other defects that may not detract from the overall appearance of the vehicle, but do exist on virtually any car that is driven on the street. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Are they able to assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
