Vehicle Detail
Up For Sale - 1972 Tin Top Westy The Good: Daily driver; starts easily after a couple pedal pumps; drives straight; stops straight; 65-70mph on flats with no wind at 5200’ above sea level; +/- 25 MPG; tight steering linkage. The engine is the so-called "Porsche" Type 4 with dual carburetors (the same engine installed in Porsche 914's of this era). The transmission/clutch shifts nicely. It leaks some oil from head/crank seals (but not enough to add any oil between 3000 mile changes). It was a Sacramento, CA bus from import until 2010 when it came to the even drier southern Idaho climate; 1972 AAA of California sticker still on windscreen, and 1972 CA state “RV Import” inspection medallion just above the Westfalia medallion below passenger door; all interior/exterior lights and electrics work, except that turn signal indicator blinks both direction arrows at the same time, even though exterior signals are doing what they should; Westfalia campmobile seats, panels and cabinetry 100% original with no speaker cut-outs or other mods. It has the model year appropriate (and almost certainly original) crankcase with serial number CB007857. A photo of the m-code plate is included with this listing. Original owners manual and folio included. All interior curtains, snaps and ties replaced with GoWesty beige in 2012. All glass is original with VW stamps. Original key opens all doors. VDO oIl temp guage in the RH "clock" slot in the instrument cluster. Suspension has been re-sprung and is completely level. New ball joints in autumn 2011 (suspension and steering work done by RMF, Inc. in Boise). Seat pedestal rubber mats replaced 2012. OG AM radio included with sale. Dash is good; not split or cracked; the engine compartment seals are present and in good condition, as are the heater components and seals (which means in winter, after warm-up, its actually works... kind of). Sink, tank, pump and icebox are all there, including the ice block tray and drain tube. The OG child hammock/shelf for front passenger compartment is included (visible rolled-up and stowed in one of the photos). New battery April 2012. The Bad: Negligible rust in the usual spots. One area about the size of a silver dollar under driver side floor mat (see photos); the passenger side is fine. No rust in dog legs. One quarter-sized rust bubble in each of the four wheel wells; some wood paneling rot near the floor at driver side of bench seat, under the table, likely from previous jalousie window leak (see photos). The affected area is about 3-4 inches wide. The odometer mileage is an estimate. The 5-digit odometer works, but its very unlikely to be 29,900 miles, so I am guessing 129,700 - but it could be 929,900 !?! Crack in windshield which has not spread in the past year; its located low in the center area (between the wiper studs) and does not affect driver or passenger vision. Walk-through area rubber floor mat has about a 4 inch tear. Three tears (one is about 3", the other each less than 1/2") in the mustard-colored westfalia seats that have been repaired with vinyl glue. The matching, correct tires have +90% tread, but are >12 years old. Safe for short drives and cool weather, but need replacement for longer drives and/or hot weather. Brand new spare 2011 (there was no spare when I bought the bus). Both bumpers are good, with very minor dents; but have been painted black (originally were white). Front badge is chrome, but should be white. The door and window seals are pretty good, but have some dry cracking. Sliding door closes flush. It rattles a little when driving because that seal is mostly shot. I have replacement sliding door seal and jalousie window re-build kits in hand - will include these with sale, and also the replacement windscreen seal for use when/if the crack spreads and becomes a problem. The Ugly: The nose has been repainted at some point in the past, and its color is a brighter white than the OG L90D pastel white, which is original on the rest of the bus (except repair noted below). The colors do not match very well, and the difference is noticeable under most lighting conditions if you look at the passenger door/nose line. No evidence of body work on the nose, it looks like the repaint was to cover rock chips and bug splats. The driver side air intake and left rear upper corner panel have been dented (prior owner said his father, owner #1, backed it into a tree branch). It probably needs to be cut out and replaced entirely. The lower body of the same corner has been cleanly repaired with filler, and the paint matches the original very well on this repair. Only trace of this repair is looking at it from inside the engine compartment. Summary and Sale Terms: I have included photos which are meant to show the problems as well as the overall, remarkably nice condition of this bus. If you would like to use video Skype or iPhone FaceTime to inspect the vehicle further or see it driven, I am happy to do so – just email me through the “ask seller a question” module and I will schedule a time. Please remember, this bus is over 40 years old. I have tried to describe everything I know about it, but am sure I left out some little detail or another. Its really great for driving and camping. This bus is totally reliable, but not so pristine that a scratch will induce vomiting. This would be a great candidate for full restoration since it is 100% original, matching numbers and negligible rust. I would not hesitate to drive this bus cross-country tomorrow (on two lane roads with all my tools and key spare parts – of course). The bus is sold as-is, where-is. No warranty is express or implied. Pick-up, and/or shipping is the sole responsibility of the buyer. I will assist with loading the vehicle for transport if you choose that method. The winning bidder must place a $500 deposit through PayPal within 24 hours of auction end, and must pay the balance within 7 business days after the auction ends. Please do not bid on this vehicle unless you truly know what to expect from a 40 year old VW camper with +/- 66 horsepower! They are cool, they are fun, they have clever camping features, BUT they are also slow to accelerate, can be buffeted around by passing semis on the highway, can be slowed significantly by headwinds, crosswinds and hills, and need lots of mechanical maintenance to run their best. The tune-ups are easy for someone who is mechanically inclined, but can be expensive if you intend to take the bus to a repair shop for every little scheduled maintenance item. Thanks for looking. Please only bid if you intend to own this vehicle, and have the money that you are biding. Ask any questions that you need answered before you bid! Do not ask for extended payment terms, or mechanical inspections, or storage after the auction has ended. If you need some custom deal point or special treatment, then please raise the issue and have it finalized with me before you bid. I am not interested in any trades. I have the clear Idaho title in my name, and the bus is currently licensed and insured. I reserve the right to terminate the sale prior to the end of the auction for any reason or no reason. The bus is for sale locally.
