Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is a 1959 Edsel Ranger four-door sedan with a 292 CID 200 h.p. V-8 "Y-Block" attached to the original Mile-O-Matic automatic transmission. Bought the car in 2000 from a private party in Grinell, Iowa who had done a great deal of restoration on it. Drove the car as a daily driver for the first few years but for the last several it has just sat inside or outside my garage being started now and then. The garage is full of other projects so the Edsel must go. When I bought it the body was in good shape but it appears that they didn't replace the rusted areas - just used filler so there is a lot of rust on the bottom of the fenders, rockers and on the bottom edge of the rear wheel openings. The interior is in fair condition with the worst section at the driver's seat. Previous owner put in new carpeting which is still in very good condition. All of the instruments work as does the radio and heater. The engine has a Pertronix solid-state ignition and the spark plugs are new. We have gone over the engine tuning the carburetor and timing it. Patent Plate breakdown is: 58D: (Four door sedan), DH1: (Redwood Metallic/Desert Tan paint), 25: (Buff interior), 18C: (planned production date of March 18, 1959), 3: (Mile-O-Matic automatic transmission), 1: (3.10:1 axle ratio. As you can see by the pictures the lower fenders, rockers and rear quarter bottoms are rusted but the floor pan and trunk look good. The tires need to be replaced and I'd go through the brakes before driving it any distance. Since composing this ad I've driven the Edsel several times for a few miles at a time on the highway putting eight gallons of gas in it and it runs okay but I still would be cautious about driving long distances. Idle is a bit rough and the transmission has shifted well but the parking pawl needs to be coaxed engage at the end of the drive but that may get better if the transmission is driven a bit more. Along with the car will go parts to add an aftermarket air conditioner that was on the car when I purchased - see the pictures. I felt I didn't need it so I removed the unit. Also I bought tan aftermarket front seat belts that will go along with the car. It's really a nice looking car and the Redwood color was a popular one. I've set the beginning bid low enough with no reserve so the car will sell. If you want to inspect it yourself or have an someone look it over, just send me a message for an appointment. For more information or additional pictures, send me a message and I will get back to you. I've taken additional pictures of the car on a lift - if you want them, just ask. I had purchased enough fabric to recover the seats in the incorrect "horsecollar" design from SMS interiors. At the time they didn't have the correct fabric design for the Buff trim code cars so I bought the incorrect design. I paid over $300.00 for the fabric several years ago - if you want the seat cloth you can have the bolt fr $100.00. If the car doesn't sell here it'll be the crusher or some charity. On Aug-30-12 at 11:17:08 PDT, seller added the following information: Just wanted to add that along with the car will go along a reprinted Edsel repair manual and a color original brochure for the 1959 Edsel models. Also I believe the keys are original Edsel ones. The ignition has the "horseshoe" design and the trunk key has a triangle. Both are chrome and have "USA" stamped on them. I have several other keys for the car but these two appear to be original. If you want pictures of any part of the car, seat belts, A/C, or these new items just send me a message. On Aug-30-12 at 14:29:21 PDT, seller added the following information:Also included is a window sticker having all the options, list price and shipping destination (Krieger Edsel in Columbus, Ohio) on a close-to-original label form. Again, if you want pictures, leave me a message.
