Vehicle Detail
Up for your consideration is a NO RESERVE 1978 Porsche 924 2 door coupe with sunroof. It definitely will need a little TLC, or could provide the key component parts for your ongoing restoration project. It is priced for cheap acquisition, as I’m selling it for a friend who bought it as a favor to someone who needed quick cash. While I am not a car guy, I can recognize that this would be great for someone who wanted to get their own Porsche for a regular driver car. I don’t think the model & year make for great collecting, but who knows what may come back in style. The car is taking up space at a garage near Washington DC, and has new tires, new brakes, new battery, and good wheels – but beyond that I don’t have any idea of its service history. I do know that my friend had it running, it just won’t STAY running. Apparently, this model has a combo fuel-injection/carburetor system that is controlled with some electronics, and the auto shop did not have anyone experienced enough to diagnose what needed to be fixed. In talking with the manager, he said that he couldn’t find a wiring diagram for the car, and was hard pressed to have his techs work on it because my friend is pretty cheap (er, frugal) when it comes to spending money on some things. He wasn’t going down that unknown path of not having a clear idea of what it would take to get it running smoothly, so he is getting rid of it. Yeah, after having it sit for roughly 5 years! Cosmetically, it has seen its better days, I’m sure – unless someone is looking for this to restore. I believe it is all original (except I can’t speak to the radio which was sitting under the rear hatch window), but didn’t know where the VIN on the engine was located. While it is pretty rough (nothing was done to even clean up the car to make it more attractive to you guys on eBay), there is still that intrinsic beauty of a Porsche, and there is plenty of value in the parts if someone chose to cannibalize it for profit. There was one spot near the front quarter panel that had paint clearly bubbling and some rust corroding the body. There is also rust on the front spoiler area. While I looked under the car, I didn’t see any significant structural rust that was obvious – and while dirty, I didn’t put it on a car lift to thoroughly inspect it. There are issues, but there are also opportunities for the right buyer. There were several parts that were removed, but all seemed contained inside the vehicle. Front seats need reupholstering, and the dashboard is pretty much toast, but the gauges and instruments seem to be all there. If you have questions, I'll try to get them answered. Car would be available for inspection prior to close of auction by emailing me to schedule a time.
