Vehicle Detail
Nearly $35,000 spent on a full Act 1 Restoration (in California) of a California 'black-plate' car approx. five years ago, plus many (primarily cosmetic) upgrades since, totaling another $8000 or so. Have over $41,000 in receipts. Under 7000 miles since restoration. Inka Orange exterior, black interior, factory sunroof, no a/c (ever, which is a plus), five re-issue factory alloy wheels, very stock except for HD Bilsteins and a satellite-radio-capable sound system. I have too many BMWs and must sell a couple of them. I would prefer to keep all of them, but I can't, realistically, and this one gets driven the least because I am getting older and this car has no a/c, so I only drive it on non-winter, dry, not-too-hot, cooler days! Sorta limits when I pull it out of storage! I've frequently picked the M5 over this one (sorry, old girl...). Car is very, very nice, but not cosmetically flawless. Frankly, anyone that tells you theirs is flawless is either lying or mistaken, in my humble opinion. These cars are nearly forty years old at this point, so unless you have recently done a $150,000 'rotisserie' no-expense-spared ground-up restoration at a top-notch restoration facility, they aren't going to be 'flawless.' That said, this one presents very well, and my local BMW dealer loves to have it in for some (rare) service from time to time. It is always kept indoors there, and lined up with things like any M-cars or other vintage Bimmers that might be in for service, and kept angle-parked along the back wall of the entry area. Issues: I have a list of mostly minor stuff that I am working from: 1) The door pull rods rattle when the door is closed, and the doors fit very tightly due to the new door gaskets, so you have to shut them pretty firmly, so you always hear the rattle. There are tiny grommets that are missing. I have the grommets, but haven't yet taken the doors apart to install them. 2) The fiberboard panels under the dash are missing. Not a huge deal, just annoying, as the interior doesn't look 100% 'finished' if you look really closely. 3) The tach was replaced, but is inaccurate at idle (shows nearly zero). It's fine at speed, but may need to be replaced with a better one? 4) The turn signals do not auto-cancel when turning left. This may be just an adjustment issue? All electrics (everywhere) are working. 5) The car was flat-bedded once, and the tow-truck driver tried to winch the car onto the flatbed using the front tie-down loop. This pulled the loop forward, bending the apron forward a bit in that area. Almost no one notices this, however, due to where it is on the car. 6) The sunroof headliner trim panel has one clip not fully inserted, causing the panel to bow downward a bit in that area. This will cause the roof panel to just barely kiss the roof if it is fully opened. There are some small marks in the paint in the sliding panel in one area. I just don't open it more than about half-way, but it should be addressed. 7) The console was replaced ($$$) but is not attached to the dash at its top, so it can be moved side-to-side if you push it by hand. Minor, but it should also be addressed at some point, in my opinion. (The seat belts were also replaced, by the way, as was almost everything else in the interior - seat padding & covers, carpeting, headliner, door panel covering, dash re-vacuum-formed, leather wrap installed on steering wheel, etc.). Parker Performance gauge pack also added. 8) The trunk floor must have been replaced at some point, and it is not a tii floor. There is no special tube for the fuel line to exit the trunk area under the trunk floor panel, so the line is routed a different way. 9) There are a couple areas where bird droppings have caused flaws in the paint. They are not major, and are not easy to see withouth looking for them, but they are there. 10) The bumpers were apparently re-chromed, not replaced, so they are not as pretty as new ones would have been (but new ones cost a bunch of dough, so I can see why they didn't replace them). This car is a blast to drive, is very presentable, has a sunroof, and is a real head-turner wherever I take it. It gets lots of 'thumbs-up' from other motorists and even pedestrians. Inka orange is a great color. The "One hundred thousand Euro" tii that BMW AG restored using Mobile Tradition parts is Inka Orange with a black interior, just like this car. (This car was Verona Red before the restoration, so the color was changed at the time of the restoration). 99% of the general population won't notice any of the issues I've mentioned in this description. This car has had the same restoration as the Malaga one you will currently find here on eBay, but has had more mechanical rebuilding done, as well as more cosmetic part replacement. Please e-mail me with any questions you might have. On Jul-05-12 at 15:11:44 PDT, seller added the following information: Updates based on the many excellent questions I've received: 1) Trans. is a stock four-speed. It works fine, new clutch parts were installed at the time of the restoration. I'd prefer a close-ratio five-speed, though! 2) Yes, the engine was fully rebuilt at the time of the restoration. $1700 in machine work, about $3000 in labor. Castrol GTX 20W-50 since. Excellent oil pressure, no smoke. Engine block is S/N 278xxxx, so not original to the car. 3) Yes, the tii clock is present, and working. 4) Front suspension is nice and tight. All six of the tie rod / center track bar ends were replaced at the time of the restoration. No issues whatsoever, per my local dealer when he looked the entire car over recently. 5) The brakes are excellent - the best of any of the dozen or more '02s that I've owned over the past thirty years. They were completely re-done at the time of the restoration. 6) There are a few small traces of the original red paint that can be found if you look thoroughly enough. Not many, though, and the outer skin was disc'ed to bare metal before paint. 7) I've posted more detailed pics. of several areas. 8) The entire exhaust system was replaced with a new stock setup at the time of the restoration. 9) I recently installed a fresh Bosch battery that fits well (and is almost all-black, so looks better when you open the hood). 10) If I were keeping the car, I would consider installing H- or V-rated tires in 185/70/13, plus a five-speed transmission, maybe even a limited-slip differential. In that order. I'd also have the shift linkage re-bushed (I think).
