Vehicle Detail
1969 Plymouth Barracuda, M code, 'cuda 440 Sports Hardtop/Fastback. For drag racing homologation purposes, Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge built ~1000, 440-powered A-body compacts in 1969, including 358 440 'cudas (of which 303 were fastbacks) and 640 GTS 440 Darts. The package included the 375hp, 440 cid, Super Commando engine as well as a heavy duty 727 Torqueflite automatic and heavy duty suspension. These 440 'cudas were built as 'cuda 383s by the Hamtrack plant, then transferred to Hurst Performance for conversion to 440 'cudas. Due to the size of the 440 Super Commando engines, neither A/C nor power steering were available in the '69 440 'cuda. This car was decoded by Galen Govier in 1991, for a Wyoming owner at the time, and is in G.T.S.'s M-code registry. Those documents, the window decal and several copies, and a repro owner's manual, go with the car. It was sold new in Cheyenne, WY and the window sticker details its options: Chrysler Super Commando 440/375 V8 Motor, 727 Torqueflight Automatic Transmission, center console, 8 ¾ Sure Grip Rear (3.55 ratio), Dual Exhaust, Moulded Hood Scoops, Center Tachometer, Full Center Console, Bucket Seats W/ Head Rests, Drip Rail Moldings, Undercoating, AM Radio, wheel covers, HD suspension. This is a Y39 Special Order car. The car sits on Firestone Super Sport bias ply tires. This is an older restoration that still shows very well. I purchased it in December 2008 out of Arizona and assume the mileage indicated is since restoration. The paint/body remain excellent with only a couple of very small blemishes in the paint (in photos). The undercarriage is dry and clean thanks to factory undercoating. The engine is a correct '69 440 High Performance, but is not original to the car as the production date is two months after the car's scheduled build date and the lower block stamping numbers are different from the last 8 digits of the car's VIN. Considering the intended use of these cars, replacement engines are not uncommon. Due to the age of the restoration, there is some fluid weeping here and there. The fluorescent lighting in these photos does not do the car justice; I will add some outdoor photos and a video this week, assuming things dry out. This 440 'cuda is collector-owned and kept in climate controlled storage. My collection has simply grown too large and Mopars are not the focus. I'd love to see this very rare example end up in a big Mopar fan's stable. It runs very well (w/ normal oil pressure). The tach does not read accurately. In-person inspection is welcome. The car only suffers from lack of frequent use, but will be detailed and serviced prior to pick up, although no warranty is expressed or implied. Check my feedback and bid with confidence!
