Vehicle Detail

Offered for sale is my 1972 Alfa Romeo Berlina 2000, with approximately 58,000 miles that I am certain are all that have ever been put on the car, because it was in such fabulous condition when I imported it from Milan, Italy, five years ago. I bought it through the (now retired to Italy) Alfa dealer/restorer Bob Cozza, then of Florida, and had it trucked here to New Orleans. At the time I bought it, it was the nicest car Bob had in his inventory. Since it is so warm here in summer and the car was not manufactured with air conditioning, my practice has been to put it into the shop every summer to have whatever niggling issues have arisen during the previous nine months of use, which amounted to perhaps twice a week, no long trips (though it could easily do a long trip). The car has received regular fluid and lube services. I’m selling because I’ve recently bought another car and must reluctantly let this one go. Now I’m going to describe the condition of the major components, including a few items that the new buyer will want to tend to: 1) Engine, drivetrain, ignition, exhaust systems : Excellent all the way around. I had both Solex carburetors rebuilt by Greff Motors of New Orleans. Greff also installed a multi-spark ignition so battery drain is of little concern. It starts like a champ. Car burns no oil, no leaks. In terms of engine performance, it’s as new, pulls strongly, very quick response. Uses regular-grade gasoline. 2) Transmission – Very good. It’s had an occasional ‘crunch’ going into first gear since I got it, but clearly of little moment. 3) Electrical – All exterior lights work fine. All interior lights work fine, except over the clock. Clock itself works only intermittently. I assume there’s a loose connection back there. Other gauges are fine. I was going to pick up a pizza about three weeks ago in the rain, when the wiper motor died. You will have to replace that. It’s an easy part to source. I’ve pulled the fuse, so it doesn’t draw on the battery. The turn indicators don’t reseat, but I don’t think any of them do. 4) Body – The car has been repainted at least once. Check the photos and you’ll see the condition of the body: no dents, just beautiful except there are some minor paint bubbles. These would crop up over the course of the year and I’d have them repaired each summer. The ones there now will have to be tended to by the new owner. With the exception of one on the lower part of the body that is about an inch in width, the others are tiny eruptions the size of a dime or smaller. Please see the photos. The lens of one of the front headlamps is cracked (my wife did this). I have not been able to source another one. It’s been professionally taped over, and of course the bulb itself works fine. All locks work fine. 5) Interior – some staining to periphery of headliner. The cloth upholstery is original and in amazing shape for its age. The back of the two rear seats are sun rotted (that way when I got it). There is a bit of wear to driver’s seat. Please look at the photos. One small sun crack above dash. Fan works fine, but temperature regulating slides are difficult to move. The wood veneer is excellent. The wooden dash is excellent. The dashboard is excellent. 6) Windshield glass – excellent. Seals are very good. No leakage. 7) Trunk – Excellent except that some of the rubber sheeting that lined the sides has torn. Please see photos. 8) Undercarriage – I can’t photograph it, but my mechanic assures me no issues under there. 9) Tires – very good, including spare. All tools present, in original vinyl sleeve. Jack works fine. 10) Books – comes with owner’s manual from 1973, in English. Also two books on the legendary Alfa aluminum twin-cam engine, which powers this car. If I’ve left anything out, please ask. This Alfa has been a champ. It has never let me down. I’m sure it would be extremely difficult to find a nicer one. I welcome a pre-purchase inspection. A call to Greff Motors would verify the rebuilding of the carburetors, installation of the multi-spark ignition, and (I forgot to mention this.) an electric antenna switch. My wife wanted that, but I can’t imagine why. The original radio gets only AM!On Jun-03-12 at 09:53:09 PDT, seller added the following information:Two descriptions I forgot: Suspension: Amazing. The undercarriage rubber feels like new (though of course it's not). Car sits right up, no sag. The ride quality is superb. Brakes: Excellent. No fade. Car tracks straight, no pulling.
