Vehicle Detail

Up For Sale (sadly) is my 1972 tin top Westy "Sugaree". This vehicle spreads happiness wherever its driven - smiles, waves, peace signs and thumbs-up! The Good: Very strong daily driver; starts easily; drives straight; stops straight, stops well, maintains 70mph easily on highway flats. Virtually no play in the steering linkage. The engine is the so-called "Porsche" Type 4 with dual carburetors (the same engine installed in Porsche 914's of this era). The transmission/clutch shifts as new. It leaks negligible drops of oil from head/crank seals (not enough to add any oil between changes). It was a Sacramento, CA bus from its September 1972 importation until 2010 when it came to the even drier Idaho climate. 1972 AAA of California sticker still on windscreen. All interior/exterior lights and electrics work properly. Interior seats, panels and cabinetry 100% original with no speaker cut-outs or other molestation. Model year appropriate (and almost certainly original) crankcase with serial number CB007857. A photo of the m-code plate is included with this listing. All interior curtains, snaps and ties replaced with GoWesty beige in 2012. All glass is original with VW stamps. Original key opens all doors. VDO oIl temp guage in the RH "clock" slot in the instrument cluster. Suspension has been re-sprung and is completely level. New ball joints in autumn 2011 (suspension and steering work done by RMF, Inc. in Boise, one of the best VW shops in the western US). Pedestal rubber mats replaced 2012. Original OEM AM radio included with sale (there's a sony am/fm/cd stereo in the dash currently - not cuts to dash). Dash is not split or cracked at all. Engine compartment seals are all present and in good condition, as are all heater components and seals (which means in winter, after warm-up, its actually works... kind of !?!). Sink, tank, pump and icebox are all very clean and working, including the ice block tray and drain tube. The OEM child hammock/shelf for front passenger compartment is included (visible rolled-up and stowed in one of the photos). The bus has been garaged the entire time I have owned it, and the previous owner (son of the 1st owner) assured me they always garaged it as well. The Bad: A little rust in the usual spots. One area about the size of a silver dollar under driver side floor mat (passenger side is fine). Some wood panelling rot near the floor at driver side of bench seat, likely from previous jalouse window leak (all sealed now). Minor surface rust in wheel wells. Crack in windshield which has not spread in the past year; its located low in the center area (between the wiper studs) and does not affect driver or passenger vision. Walk-through area rubber floor mat has a hole. Three tears (one is about 3", the other each less than 1/2") in the mustard-colored westfalia seats that have been repaired with vinyl glue. The matching, correct tires have +90% tread, but are >12 years old. Safe for short drives and cool weather, but need replacement for longer drives and/or hot weather. Brand new spare (there was no spare when I bought the bus). Both bumpers are really good (very minor dents); but have been painted black (originally were white). Front badge is chrome, but should be white. The door and window seals are pretty good (4 out of 5 in condition) , but not new. I have replacement sliding door seal and jalousie window re-build kits in hand - will either include these with sale or will have replaced them prior to sale. I also have a replacement windscreen seal for use when/if the crack spreads and becomes a problem that will be included with the sale. The Ugly: The nose has been repainted at some point in the past, and its color is a brighter white than the OEM L90D pastel, which is original on the rest of the bus (except repair noted below). The colors do not match very well, and the difference is noticeable under most lighting conditions if you look at the passenger door/nose line. The driver side air intake and left rear upper corner panel have been dented (prior owner said his father, owner #1, backed it into a tree branch). It is a difficult body repair, probably needs to be cut out and replaced entirely. The lower body of the same corner has been cleanly repaired with filler, and the paint looks original on this repair. Only trace of this repair is looking at it from inside the engine compartment - it cannot be noticed from the exterior. Summary and Sale Terms: I have inlcuded photos which are meant to show the problems as well as the overall, remarkably nice condition of this bus. I am selling this sweetie so that I can start a 1966 split window bus project. I need the cash from this to take the next steps on that one. Please remember, this bus is over 40 years old. I have tried to describe everything I know about it, but am sure I left out some little detail or another. Its really great for driving and camping. Totally reliable, but not so pristine that a scratch will induce vomiting. I would not hesitate to drive this bus cross-country tomorrow. Thanks for looking, and bid with confidence. I have heaps more photos, so if you want to see some detail that is not on the listing, I'll post it or take another shot. The bus is sold as-is, where-is. Pick-up, and/or shipping is the sole responsibility of the winning bidder. The odometer mileage is an estimate. The 5-digit odometer works, but its very unlikely to be 29,700 miles, so I am guessing 129,700 - but it could be 929,700 !?! I have the clear Idaho title in hand, vehicle is currently licensed and insured. I reserve the right to terminate the sale prior to the end of the auction, since the vehicle is for sale locally. I also reserve the right to change my mind and keep her. DON'T BID UNLESS YOU INTEND TO COMPLETE THE TRANSACTION! BAD KARMA FOR YOU AND ALL YOUR DESCENDENTS IF YOU MUCK ABOUT WITH VW AUCTIONS !!! On May-31-12 at 11:50:43 PDT, seller added the following information: **** Added Information and Pricing Change 5/31/12: I did not originally include a "buy it now" price. However, I received an inquiry in that regard, so in the interest of fairness and transparency, I added that to this listing. Also, in regard to condition, the sliding door operation is a little rough. It closes flush with body, and latch/lock work properly - but not quite original smoothness. That door also rattles a bit while driving, because the rubber seal is essentially missing - that's why a new OG seal will be included with the sale.
