Wrap you head around the idea of a wheelbase 20 inches shorter than an Accord, 1,000 lbs. lighter, with triple the horsepower. However familiar the shape, actually standing next to a 427 Cobra (blessed with proper stance, pipes and tires) is a thrill. Sitting in the snug cockpit, the rear tire is inches from your ear and at about the same height. An enormous black side pipe is a hand's width away from your hip, providing convenient, effortless burning of exposed flesh (should you choose to touch it) . . . . . . everything is simple and direct; there is an engine. It rests behind the front axle center line and it has a throttle cable connected to a gas pedal. A Richmond 5-speed bolts to a Lakewood bell housing and a driveshaft not quite a foot long, turns a gorilla-like Ford 9-inch rear end. That's it. No emissions, no accessories and absolutely nothing to save your inexperienced ass, should this reptile be injudiciously provoked. The bones of this beast are similarly simple. There is a steel frame. (fully boxed) It has coil overs, a rack/pinion, spindles and a rear axle. The fiberglass body bolts to the frame and there's a fuel cell in the trunk. You put gas in the tank, yourself behind the wheel and that's pretty much what a 427 Cobra is. An engine, a car and a driver. You start the engine and you drive the car. No cup holders, no stereo, no heater and no roof. If it doesn't make the car go, turn or stop, or if it isn't directly related to any of those things, this car doesn't have it . . . . . . what it does have is something near 600 horsepower and something over 600 ft-lbs of torque. On the street, the RPMs really don't matter; epic power is everywhere and in every gear. From a standstill, full whack in first is dramatic. (and expensive) From a roll, if you manage to keep the back of the car behind you, a racing shift to second produces something a lot more than just a "chirp." Acceleration is violent. Steering is so direct that at first, it feels too direct. At speed, you have to pay attention. The path between thought in your head and conclusion at the front wheels is short . . . . . . that's not to say this Cobra isn't an easy cruiser; it is a perfect gentleman at low RPMs. Despite its Winternationals idle quality, the big 482 doesn't stall, load up or foul the plugs and has no hot/start issues. It doesn't overheat and it starts every time. We bring up these qualities because an engine this radical and a car this extreme is too often a car very difficult to enjoy. Not so, this Cobra. When it's time to get it on, however, the 482 delivers. Mash the gas and the power doesn't just pour on, build or increase rapidly. It explodes. As in; you're standing still when suddenly, the needle whips past 100 MPH. As in; the thought of changing lanes begins to form in your mind and to your horror, the car is already moving over. The brakes can turn Tuesday to Monday and the whole thing comes together in a car that becomes part of the driver very quickly. The build quality is so good, you'll feel confident to start exploring its (unbelievably high) limits after just a few minutes. New AutoMeter Cobra gauges with the correct reverse spin speedometer adorn a beautiful padded instrument panel. The Long shifter is tight and precise . . . as well as good looking. 482 Cubic Inch (7.9 liter) Genesis Aluminum 427 Side Oiler 580 horsepower/630 ft-lb torque (guesstimate) The Genesis aluminum block is about 112 lbs lighter than their cast iron block. The Hawaii Racing receipt for this monster came to $16,000 and it is set up completely for nitrous. The parts list is too long. (see above) The aluminum intake manifold and heads are polished, something you don't see too often. That large aluminum thing around the carburetor is called a "turkey pan." As you probably know, its purpose is to take in more cool air through the hood scoop and less hot air from the engine compartment. Pete Brock, designer of the legendary Cobra coupe, was on hand recently at a local car show and was nice enough to sign the dash on this car . . . . . . that says "Pete Brock." 16 gallon Harwood fuel cell dominates a carpeted trunk finished in aluminum. This Cobra is an original black-plate car. High polished Edelbrock nitrous tank. Simplicity, strength and muscle best describes this all business undercarriage. Fully boxed steel frame and other visible goodies: rack and pinion steering, tubular upper A-arms, coil-over shocks, kicked out 10 quart oil pan, Lakewood bell housing, Richmond Road Race 5-speed transmission, fender-well headers . . . . . . Currie/Ford 9-inch rear end, Competition Engineering upper/lower control arms, Aeromotive fuel pumps and Harwood 16-gallon fuel cell. VIN: CA498231 Over $40,000 in receipts . . . . . . including $16,000 for the engine . . . . . . receipt for head work (left, $2,716.20) and rear axle (right, $2,101.66). Aldan Eagle coil-over shocks at each corner, Competition Engineering upper/lower rear control arms and tubular front upper A-arms. Also, Currie rear axles and new brake pads. Quality of this build can be seen under the dash with pricey components, heat/sound deadener and well planned layout. MSD electronic ignition includes this Retard Module Selector. (master cut-off switch is to the right) AFCO remote brake/clutch cylinders with skid plate and braided lines. Cockpit cover, original bumper/bumperettes and rear view mirror.
