I bought this car from a good friend about 9 years ago – the car was in perfect condition then and is exactly in the same shape today. It had approximately 44,000 miles then and has about 53,000 miles now – i.e. I drove less than 1,000 miles per year on average. This has always been a “toy” (second car) for me and I have always kept it in my garage in New Jersey (1 h from Manhattan). Under my ownership the car has never seen any snow, and rain only once or twice when I just couldn’t avoid it. It has been serviced on a regular basis by the local MB dealer (have records) and has been kept very clean (always hand washed and hand detailed; non-smoker). Apart from very few and very minor scratches (hardly noticeable) and some very minor interior wear (patina), the car looks like new. The car comes with a fully automatic soft top and also with a hard top which I have never used. The car is accident-free and fully-loaded with automatic everything (convertible top, windows, seats with memory and lumbar support, mirrors, roll-over bar, transmission, door locks, et cetera), power everything (brakes, steering, et cetera), several air bags, ABS, traction control, anti theft, rain sensing window wipers, xenon head lights, cruise control, premium and powerful Bose stereo system with 6 CD changer, black leather seats/steering wheel/ door panels, wood trim and so on. The car has the desired “AMG Sports Package” – custom 18 inch aluminum block AMG wheels, sculptured side moldings, and sports suspension. Mechanically, the car is like you would expect a new car to function: the engine (V8, 5 Liters, 315hp) starts right away, runs very smoothly and is very powerful with plenty of low-end torque. Brakes and suspension are perfect. All electrical systems and electronics work as they should. The A/C is ice cold and the automatic climate control works perfectly. This Mercedes model type (R129) was made between 1990 and 2002. The 1997 and 1998 models are considered the most desirable given that they have all modern conveniences (after 1999 there were only minor cosmetic changes – mirrors, tailpipe, instruments) and the most powerful engine. Beginning in 1999 (with the merger with Chrysler), Mercedes replaced the quad valve and quad cam engine of this SL500 with a lower performance engine (3 valves, less power, less torque).
