Vehicle Detail

This is a very nice 1966 Volvo P1800S coupe. First off, let me tell you that while I am certainly a car guy, I am not a Volvo guy, this being the first one I have ever owned, and I got this one in a trade for a motorcycle. So, without a doubt you know far more about these cars than me, so I apologize in advance for any mistakes I make in its description and I also assure you that if you have any questions whatsoever I will find answers for you. This is a great car and I want it to go to a P1800 enthusiast - a fate that it deserves. I cannot vouch for the mileage as I have only owned this car a short while. It very recently came out of indoor storage where it had been for about 12 years and all the mechanicals were gone through by a professional mechanic. It starts, runs, and shifts great. The clutch has an occasional juddering when engaged, probably a result of the long-term lack of use. The engine runs like the proverbial Swiss watch. It has 50 psi oil presseure according to the gauge on the dash. The tach and speedometer work, although the tach reads much higher than actual engine speed. Tires are great, glass is good except for a little windshield chip on the extreme left side that looks like it was hit with a BB. The back seat looks great, carpets are old and worn, dash pad is great, but the center bar in the dash needs recovering. Has no radio but has a Volvo radio block-off plate that is not currnetly installed. You can see that the aerial and right-side mirror are not on the car, but I have those, along with a ton of other stuff. It currently has a Weber carb conversion, but I have the original Volvo intake with two SU carbs attached. I was informed by the mechanic ex-owner that this car has the 1969 (I think) B20B 2-liter motor instead of the original 1800cc one. The transmission feels to me like it is all-synchro. The body is great with the only rust issue I have seen being a small hole in the very bottom of the rear panel below the bumper and a small amount of rust, about an inch long, where that panel meets the trunk on the driver's side. However, I have a brand-new-in-the-wrapper rear panel from Volvo that goes with the car that will nicley take care of that. I looked underneath it but did not put it on a rack. It looked very good underneath and, at least in front, new braided stainless steel brake lines were evident (see picture). All the trim is intact and on the car. It runs and drives nicely. The dash gauges look great. Here is a partial list of parts that go with the car: New parts include: a fitted front "mask" in a pouch that looks like it has never been used (see picture), a battery tray, the aforementioned rear panel (Volvo P/N 66400-7), 2 anchorage plates, a windshield washer tank, many miscellaneous hoses, grommets, and some fairly large needle bearings, 2 Volvo mud flaps, 2 Volvo speakers with surrounds, a stay plate (whatever that is) (Volvo P/N 661472-4), a distributor cap, and a defroster motor that looks aftermarket. Used parts include: 2 spare wheels with tires in addition to the regular spare, a steering box, radio block-off plate, spare fender mirror, valve cover, radiator fan, wiper motor with linkages, parking brake boot, gearshift boot, under-dash A/C assembly I am told would have come with this car (including dryer and compressor), dashboard with installed speedometer, temperature gauges, and clock, both glass rear quarter windows, shifter, 2 tail light lenses, steering wheel center, hood ornament, 2 key and lock assemblies, several windshield wipers, blower motor assembly, exhaust header, grille, several window regulators, tail light assembly, and a license plate light. In addition, there are many small parts that were just too much trouble to go through and a few parts that I cannot identify. Plus, there is a box full of books, manuals, correspondence, and receipts, including at least seven different shop manuals, three hard-bound Volvo books, and loose-leaf parts manuals. Plus stuff like a belt with a Volvo buckle and Volvo-related stickers and such. This is a great car needing only a nice paint job and a little interior work to be a terrific car. It runs and drives nicely and is deserving of your attention if you are in the market for one. I am eager to sell it and, if it does not sell at auction, I will consider any trade offers, especially if they are for motorcycles and especially if they are for a bike plus some cash. So, P1800 enthusiasts, ask anything you need to. Just tell me what to look for and I will get you an answer. You can reach me by email or call me at 865-387-0925. Thanks. On Apr-17-12 at 10:21:23 PDT, seller added the following information:Here is some more information in response to the many questions I have received. First, as regards the all-important issue of rust. There is a hole in the bottom of the rear panel, as I stated, that is repairable. I also have a brand-new rear panel that could be used to replace the affected area. There is a hole in the floor below the clutch pedal right where the floor bends upward behind the pedals that I did not see before. I have a section of floor to be used as a replacement. There is also a straight section of square tubing about 18" long running longitudinally under the floor directly below the driver's legs that has some rust holes. Repairable or easily replaced. That's about it. The rocker panels, floors, trunk floor, and jacking points are all solid. This is minimal rust for an unrestored car of this age. As to electrical, the lights all work, including interior lights, turn signals, brake lights, and dash lights. The wipers and heater blower also work. The horn and clock do not. I believe it has overdrive as there is a stalk to the right of the steering column. This car has a clear title. The car is located in Knoxville, Tennessee. I will ship it overseas but it is up to you as the buyer to arrange all shipping. According to the plaque under the hood, this car was originally dark grey with a red leather interior. Some of the original grey is visible on the tail of the car as well as on the door jambs. There is no evidence whatsoever that it has ever been involved in an accident. I chose to list this car in an auciton format rather than a classified ad to see what it would bring. My reserve price is irrelevant to what you are willing to pay, so do no ask it! If you want the car, then bid on it what you are willing to give for it. If it does not meet the reserve then we can talk about other options after the auction is over. Thank you all for your phenomenal interest in this great car!On Apr-21-12 at 19:11:59 PDT, seller added the following information:One last word to those of you fretting over this issue of the lone rusty piece of hat channel under the driver's floor. I could have patched it up and undercoated it and not mentioned it, but I didn't - I told everyone about it. This is a 46-year-old car and therefore it is not perfect, and it is not priced as such. It is an honest unrestored car - the kind that you just don't find every day. I spent 5 minutes online doing a search and found a replacement piece of this channel for sale, specifically for this car, and it costs $85. It is at Wolf Steel Restorations (www.alfaparts.net), part number VP13. I know it will have to be welded back in, but it is an exposed piece that is readily accessible. It is not rocket science! I have lowered my reserve on this car, but I will not give it away over an $85 part. Therefore, if it does not meet the very reasonable reserve, I will do the restoration myself and then see what it brings. This is your opportunity to buy a really nice car that runs great and with a ton of valuable extra parts for a great price. Not a giveaway price, but a great price. Don't let this opportunity slip away!
