I. 1987 BMW M6 - HISTORY In 1983 BMW took the M88/3 engine, a modified version of the M88/1 from the BMW M1 and put it in the E24 chassis of the BMW 6-Series, creating the M6 BMW (Referred to as the M635Csi in other markets). The M6 was critically acclaimed throughout its lifespan for its elegant, aggressive "shark-nose" styling, its luxury equipment, and its performance. A top speed of 158 mph made the European version the second fastest BMW ever built next to the M1. In the La Carrera Classic Race, Rug Cunninham ran a bone stock 1987 BMW M6 and recorded a top speed of 176 mph (due to the lack of a speed limiter fitted by BMW). The BMW M6 is easily distinguished from other E24 models by a larger front air dam, a rear spoiler, upgraded BBS wheels, and color matching side view mirrors, M badges on the grille and back and slightly larger front brakes. In North America (United States and Canada), the E24 M6 was fitted with the catalyzed S38B35 motor, producing 256 bhp with 243 ft-lbf of torque. The non-catalyzed versions were only available in Europe, though there were 538 catalyzed M635csi models sold in Europe in 1988 and 1989. The 1988 and 1989 the M6 was a "world car" with the same bumpers and aerodynamic treatments in all markets. Quarter mile times for the European version have been recorded at 14.5 seconds while 161 km/h (100 mph) is achieved in 15 seconds. However, Car and Driver Magazine tested the U.S. M6 in July 1987 and achieved a 0-97 km/h (0-60 mph) time of 6.1 seconds. Also in 1987 Road and Track featured the U.S. M6 as one of the 10 fastest cars in America. Production of the M6 ended in 1989, with 5,859 cars sold, 1,767 of which were North American (U.S. & Canada) models. The BMW M6 was produced in extremely low numbers. WHAT DO THE EXPERTS HAVE TO SAY? - Motor Trend 9/87 - "There were several things we took a disliking to during our week with the BMW M6.one was the National speed limit. Another was the necessity to leave the car alone, at least for six or seven hours to enter the other world of dreams. "But by far the worst was having to hand the vehicle back." - Automobile Magazine 9/87 - The M6 equal the Porsche 928 and Ferrari in luxury and is surpassed only by the Porsche and perhaps the Ferrari in performance. That makes it one of the best cars in the world. - Road & Track 1987 - In 1987 Road and Track featured the U.S. M6 as one of the 10 fastest cars in America IV. THIS PARTICULAR BMW M6 - SUMMARY Over the course of over 30 years we have had the pleasure of owning and often using a BMW "M" as our daily "Driver." We especially enjoy the "M" series cars and have owned all of the high performance BMW models produced from the 1970's - present. We must admit that the BMW M6 is one of our favorites. The M6 offers a wonderful blend of comfort, high performance and makes a fantastic long distance touring car. Additionally, with a production run of only 5,835 cars worldwide between 1984-1989, the cars have already become desirable and are destined to be future collectibles. Despite being in business for close to 20 years our enthusiasm for well cared for collector and specialty cars has not changed. In fact, if anything, we have learned to appreciate the cars that we drove "in the day" as they have become increasingly scarce. In the case of the BMW M6 (E24) the car was rare because of its limited production and finding an example in this condition is very difficult. To find a California car like this example that has had one owner even more of a challenge. This BMW M6 was delivered to its proud new owner on 10/17/87. Her name is shown in the Service Booklet as is the date of the delivery, stamps for the initial inspection and subsequent service inspections by BMW and BMW specialty repair facilities. The file contains documentation of the cars Inspection I, Inspection II and a large number of oil changes. The cars recent maintenance is outlined in greater detail under the "Maintenance" section. Within the previous 100 miles the BMW was inspected by a local BMW specialist (with particular knowledge of "M" cars) and found to be a "very legitimate / original car." A thorough inspection of the undercarriage, suspension components, and underside and body panels indicted no accidents and absolutely no rust. The M6 also received a complete safety inspection to verify that all safety systems (tires, brake, turn signals, lights, back up lights, wipers, etc.) are totally functional). Inspection results can be made available to serious buyers. COSMETIC CONDITION Our experience tells us that, these days, it is virtually impossible to find a California BMW M6 with original paint in totally unmodified, unaltered condition. All too often the "M" cars that we encounter have engine modifications, significant alterations to the suspension components, sway bars and a host of other changes and what many believe to be "upgrades." Frankly, we learn toward being purists when it comes to cars like the M6 and believe that it is better to find a completely stock example or a "clean sheet of paper" and, if you choose, make the changes that YOU prefer..the way you like them. If you are a believer in having a high performance German sports coupe configured in the way that it left Munich, you're in luck with this car! When it comes to the cosmetic condition of the M6 the BMW rates very high, indeed. Certainly, the fact that the M6 has had only one owner makes a significant difference and has resulted in an uninterrupted history of the BMW. The car could be described as a later model "Survivor" having been kept in totally stock condition by its mature owner and only driver. The condition of the body, paint, interior and trim all rate very high even under close scrutiny by BMW aficionados. We ask that you review the 100~ photos to get a better sense of the true quality of this particular example and ask that you keep in the mind the old adage "The Devil is in the Details" when it comes to the following specific benefits of this M6: - 100% clean Car Fax supporting one owner (Delivered to BMW dealer a few miles from our location - Immaculate engine bay with factory stickers in place - Beautiful original trunk with factory mats & original never used spare & tools - Excellent no damage or fading "M" factory steering wheel - Clear fully functional gauges - Power seats are operational (except for the headrest function) The M6 was produced and retains its original paint, Cinnamon Red and the striking Lotus White leather interior. While we often see the BMW 6's with badly worn seats (especially the driver's side seat bolster) this M6 is clearly the exception. The entire interior is as nice as we have seen on any BMW of this vintage and shows no significant flaws / imperfections. From the dash to the door panels the car has the appearance of a much newer example. EXTERIOR DETAILS With a history of being originally delivered in Northern California and having spent its entire life into Italy it comes as no surprise that the car is rust free. Being from Chicago we remember the "rust belt" cars and now appreciate why buyer's from all over the world choose California to source quality collector cars with virtually no rust. This particular car is not only free from rust but also extremely straight with no indication of any previous rust, rot or accident / frame damage. A close inspection of all of the areas of the car including the usually rust affected areas like the trunk, rocker panels, lower front and rear fenders and engine bay reveal totally solid "California clean" panels. The comprehensive file documents a high level of ongoing care by the owner who has kept the BMW in absolutely lovely condition. The panel fit rates very high with even door trunk and hood gaps As a result of the minimal use and little / no exposure to the elements, the BMW has beautiful paint that is free from all but the most minor marks and chips noticeable only upon a close critical inspection. Of course, the car has been garaged and received professional detailing to ensure that he BMW looked its best at all times. INTERIOR CONDITION The interior is equally as nice as the exterior and remains in 100% original configuration. It is incredible that this light colored interior and seats with high bolsters has held up as well as it has. The front and back seats are excellent, the headliner and visors free from damage / dirt and the carpet in very good condition. We attribute the high quality of the interior to the cars ownership by one careful woman driver coupled with the low mileage of fewer 3,500~ miles per year. Virtually the entire interior is free from damage and signs but all of the most minor wear. The often times cracked split dash on the 6-sries dash is excellent in this case with the elegant stitching on the dash, side panels and other parts of the interior adding a wonderful, classy touch to the interior. We often see the stock BMW radio replaced with an inexpensive aftermarket radio but this car retains the original working BMW unit. While it has been in place since the car was new, we imagine that it has received little use with the cars enthusiast owner preferring the sound of the exhaust note over any music from the sound system. The dash is fitted with the stock instruments, all of which are totally functional including all of the gauges, turn signals, lighting system and horn. The door hardware and trim are also in excellent condition and the electric windows work properly. The side windows are tinted with a relatively light tint. The trim around the windows is very good. The heating & ventilation system is functional and the A/C compressor activates but the air does not seem to blow cold. The car was used infrequently and the owner never chose to use the air conditioning. The headliner is excellent as are the stock factory issued sun visors. The BMW's trunk is very clean containing the original rear trunk liner. Removing the spare tire cover and spare reveals a 100% amazingly clean and rust free rear tire well including the original jack and the original spare fitted with a new tire. The valuable trunk kit (complete!) is in place. V. DRIVING THE BMW M6 While the BMW M6 is consistently praised for its beautiful styling, the cars offered a wonderful combination of elegant styling comfort and driving enjoyment. Over the years, we have driven literally hundreds of BMW's. They have been our choice as our regular high performance "Driver's" and we especially appreciate a car that has remained in its stock configuration since new. This car is truly a joy to drive. Whether cold or warm the BMW fires up immediately with the characteristic higher fuel injected engine idle until the car is full warm. Once the idle settles down the car runs smoothly at just below 1,000 rpm. The engine is free from any noises and the car does not leak fluids. The clutch engages without fuss and as you shift from first to second gear you notice how solid and tight the car feels. No rattles, squeaks or indication that you're driving a Coupe vs. A nice feeling. As you begin to drive you also appreciate the "green house" effect that the M6 offers allowing for great visibility. Additionally you are reminded that the driving position is excellent with infinitely adjustable power seats making this a great long distance touring car in addition to being a practical, fast and fun everyday or weekend car for use on those twisty back roads. Once you gain momentum it is clear that this car is noticeably quicker than a stock 6-Series BMW of the era. Not only does the car feel fast in a straight line, the suspension is compliant and the steering precise and certain. The braking system is excellent, stopping the car stops straight and sure. The emergency brake is properly adjusted and fully functional. While certainly not overly loud, the BMW has the perfect exhaust note as a result of the stock exhaust system. The combination of the sound of the fantastic in-line 6 cylinder and the throaty exhaust, especially in the higher rev ranges, has us reaching to turn off the cars sound system to better hear the car's engine. As the revs rise, the exhaust tone becomes increasingly pleasing. This particular car runs and drives extremely well and it totally sorted and ready to enjoy. As expected from a BMW with low mileage updated driveline and suspension, the car runs and drives extremely well. An inspection less than 100 miles ago confirms the mechanical strength of the BMW and the ongoing preventive maintenance has been completed in an attempt to minimize any future mechanical issues. The BMW is extremely comfortable under all driving conditions ranging from a daily commute to, well, more spirited activities. As always, BMW designed and delivered a superb sporting Coupe in the M6 and it remains one of the all-time classic BMW's of all time. The car combines amazing good looks, precision and style and is a delight to drive. It's the hot-looking partner that you've been looking for, will enjoy on your first date, and never tire of. VI.
