Vehicle Detail

No Reserve. In the early 1970’s my dear friend Walter purchased a 1966 Tempest/LeMans Sprint OHC-6, 4speed with 3:55 Posi Rear. When this Poncho became too rusty for daily use in the late 1970’s, its drive train was removed and stored in his garage, waiting for a rust free body to be sourced. Well, one thing led to another, and the parts remained stored in his dry garage until last year, when I inherited them. I do not believe that all of the parts were original to this 1966 Tempest/Lemans Sprint as you will see from the identifying data included below. However, I am as certain as I can be that they all came off of Walter’s 1966 Tempest/ Lemans Sprint. Please research and judge for yourself. I have never owned an OHC-6 Sprint or ever worked on one. However, I have had a 64 Grand Prix Tri-Power, 77 Trans Am and 69 Firebird, so I am into the hobby, just not an expert on OHC-6 Sprints or on anything else for that matter. The engine is disassembled (I'm not sure why) and is partially complete with the following: Engine Block: Deck Stamped - ZE 6 85784, date code F158 and GM Part Number 9782000 both stamped on passenger side of block. I see no obvious defects, but assume it would need to be machined to be useable. If I have done my homework, it appears this is an OHC 6 Sprint Block for an automatic car. Main bearing caps and bolts included. I do not have the exhaust manifold or intake manifold or rods or pistons. Head: GM Part Number 9782229. No other stampings. Head includes all valves and springs, but no bolts, lifters, lash adjusters. I assume it would have to be machined to be useable. Cam Cover & Cam Shaft: GM Part Number 9782012. Includes thermostat housing and cam gear. There appears to be some wear on the Number 5 exhaust lobe of the cam. It is slight enough that it does not show in the photos, but it may be enough to make the cam unusable, or in need of machining, I’m not sure. No bolts. Distributor: This appears to be a nice piece. Delco – Rem Code 1110394 5K12 Various other engine parts: Distributer drive housing #9785657 CFD, Timing covers #9782177 & 9782176, bracket #9782681, water pump pulley #9782954XN, fan blade, crank gear and spaces, motor mounts, oil pan, coil. Crankshaft: # k216, 3820618N (no harmonic balancer key) and harmonic balancer stamped CA L4 and #9783090. The crank has surface rust on all the journals and would need machined at a minimum, if it is useable. Rochester Carburetor: This is a nice unit. Stamped 7027261 K6 HF on the left side and 29865 on the rear. Sources suggest this carburetor is for a 66-67 OHC-6 Sprint manual transmission, without a/c. 4 Speed Saginaw Transmission set up: Sources indicate that the Saginaw 4 Speed included with the Sprint package was specifically designed to get the most out of the OHC-6 Sprint package. Many of its parts, including the bell housing and Z-bar were specially designed for the OHC-6. It appears that most of the needed parts are present to do a complete 4 Speed conversion on an OHC-6 equipped Pontiac. Transmission side cover M3890527 6, date code J226, case 3890564 L86, tail shaft 3873886, date code K226, Hurst Competition Shifter 48B4, Z-Bar, clutch pedals, linkage, aluminum bell housing #9783111, clutch fork, shifter porch, flywheel, clutch disc and pressure plate, transmission cross member #9796239, steering column #B8122B with steering wheel. The transmission can be shifted into all four gears. I could not shift it into reverse as the transmission is not bolted to anything and is rolling around when I tried. The reverse lever does move in and out with ease. The Hurst shift handle is not in great shape. The shift mechanism itself, has thin bits of tin where the shifter handle drops into the shifter mechanism which have broken off? I have no experience with 4 speeds. I thought someone had stuffed an old VIN plate down in where the shifter handle should mount. When I pulled them out, it appears that they may have been attached. To be safe, assume that the shift mechanism itself would need to be rebuilt. Ten Bolt Posi-Rear: This is a bit of a mystery. It is stamped ZH on the back side of the driver’s side axle tube, towards the carrier. On the right lower side of the carrier appears #9793236 with “65” above it which I assume is a date code. Sources indicate that this is a 3:55 Posi (safe-t-track) out of a 1965 GTO. Includes brake drums and axles. However, I have found so much conflicting information about rear end codes, I’m not sure what to think. However, I found where code ZH was used for 1966 GTO as well. Thus, I’m not sure this is a true Sprint coded axle as it may have been swapped from a GTO into this 1966 LeMans/Tempest Sprint to extend its useful life. 128 Photos may be found at: http://s1146.photobucket.com/albums/o526/truthseeker1964/1966%20Pontiac%20Lemans%20Sprint%20Parts%20Car/ Sources for Rochester Carburetor Codes http://www.highperformancepontiac.com/tech/hppp_0612_rochester_quadrajet_carburetor/viewall.html Sources for Rear End Differential Codes http://www.oldride.com/library/pontiac_gto.html Sources for 1966-67 Lemans Sprint http://www.hemmings.com/mus/stories/2009/06/01/hmn_buyers_guide1.html http://www.highperformancepontiac.com/features/0207hpp_1967_lemans_sprint/index.html Sources for OHC-6 & Saginaw 4spd identification codes. http://firstgenfirebird.org/firebird/1968/id_numbers.html http://www.firebirdgallery.com/67codes.htm Please assume that all mechanical parts will need to be machined or rebuilt prior to use. I am selling all the parts together with a bill of sale to the highest bidder. If you don’t see it pictured, then I do not have it! Payment of $200 via pay pal within 48 hours of the end of the auction, the balance is due within 7 days from the end of the auction.
