This Particular FORD Torino Coupe - Summary IV. Driving the Ford Torino V. Miscellaneous Information VI. Purchasing a Collector Car - Things to Consider VII. About Classic Cars Ltd. I. 1979 FORD TORINO - HISTORY "The Torino GT was flashy and fast and could reach 60 mph in 8 seconds." ©2007 Publications International, Ltd. Having arrived on the scene in 1968, the Torino GT name was a latecomer to the performance party. The guests weren't getting their coats on to go just yet, but the appetizers were long gone and, by the time the 1970 Ford Torino GT Convertible arrived, you had to hurry to make sure that you got your share of the main course. The Torino wasn't so much a clean-sheet design as it was a remake of the existing mid-size Ford Fairlane line. Upon its arrival, it took the top slot in the intermediate lineup, bumping the Fairlane 500 down a notch. For 1970, the distinctly straight-edged design of the past gave way to sleeker, more purposeful-looking models. Wheelbases went up an inch to 117 on coupes and sedans, and 114 on station wagons. Roof-lines were lower, and the 1970 Torino's were two inches wider and four inches longer than their predecessors. The 1970 Fairlane / Torino family was issued five ways: Fairlane 500, Torino, Torino Brougham, Torino GT, and Torino Cobra. (At mid-year the Falcon compact was dropped, but its name was cribbed for a mid-sized budget line set below the Fairlane 500.) The Torino was fitted with a range of engines including a 250-cubic inch six and V-8s of 302 and 351 cubic inches. GTs like the convertible featured a distinctive egg-crate grille complemented by a honeycomb overlay on the full-length rear light panel. Appearance options included hideaway headlights ($53) and graduated body side "laser" stripes ($39). The Torino was something of a child prodigy. In 1970, at the tender age of two, it collected several noteworthy distinctions. Motor Trend named Torino its Car of the Year; NASCAR tapped it to be the official pace car of the stock-car racing circuit. The Torino was very similar in design to the Ford Fairlane line. ¬Flashy and fast (a 300-horse 351-equipped model could hit 60 mph in eight seconds), the GT hardtop accounted for 56/819 orders in 1970. Meanwhile, the GT ragtop was the rarest Ford intermediate: Just 3,939 of the $3,212 cars were built. At the high-water mark of the performance era, car buyers had so many quality products from which to choose that anything could get overlooked, even in Bright Yellow or Grabber Orange. The Torino GT was a sporty car with a comfortable interior and a simple dash design. II. THIS PARTICULAR FORD TORINO - SUMMARY This rare Torino comes to us, as do the large majority of our cars, as a result of a referral from one of our very good customers. We recently sold another classic muscle car for this Bay Area executive and purchased a car from him for our owner's personal collection. For the time being, he has decided to reduce his collection and retain only a few automobiles. All of his cars, including the rare Ford Torino convertible listed here, are exceptional and were restored to meet his high standards. This example is a cost no object, restoration that was completed to his specifications by Ford restoration professionals with experience in restoring a variety of Fords including Shelby Mustangs, Sunbeam Tiger's, Mustang fastback's and other Ford products. The restoration is documented by receipts and photos in addition to complete historical information on the car. He realizes that he will not come close to recouping his substantial investment in the car but has decided to reduce the number of cars that he owns due to his family commitments and work schedule. So, as with many restorations, the new owner will benefit from the investment of the previous owner and receive a car that is 100% "turn-key" and fully sorted. The following represents a partial list of some of the restoration items performed on the Torino: MECHANICAL CONDITION The car retains the 351 c.i (now with a 4bbl), top loader 4-speed and a 9" rear with 350 posi-traction. Prior to the cars cosmetic and mechanical restoration the mileage was reported as original. The car has had 2 previous Montana owner's. When the restoration began the car was damage free and had all of its original sheet metal. Panel fit was (and is) excellent with solid closing doors, no door sagging and no rust in the body or chassis. The car was a beautiful original and the perfect (and rare) specimen for a restoration. The car underwent a complete professional restoration with virtually every mechanical component being addressed. The engine received considerable attention during the rebuild with the goal of significantly improving performance without affecting reliability. Total & Complete Engine Restoration Including (Not dynoed but the engine builder estimates 375~hp: - .030 oversize pistons - Install new KB pistons - Crank kit 10/10 - New roller rockers - Comp cam lifters - Align & bore block - Deck block - Fit recon. rods & rings - All other miscellaneous machine work - Holley carburetor - New clutch & related components (Heavy Duty Borg & Beck) - Custom intake manifold - Carburetor - New headers - New water pump - New brake master cylinder - New voltage regulator - New starter, solenoid - New alternator - Braided engine lines - Complete engine tune - Fresh fluids & break in fluids - Complete engine "dress-up" (Chrome air cleaner, stainless lines) Additional mechanical work included: - Completely rebuild front suspension - All new steering components - All new brakes - Front end alignment - Engine bay completely "replumbed" - All new hoses - Calibrate speedometer - Complete custom made exhaust system - New, freshly painted or NOS bolts, brackets, nuts, etc - R & R rear differential, inspect & detail - Rebuild power steering unit - Upgraded wheels & tires with 17" front & 18" rear (no clearance issues) The Torino has been inspected not only by an independent repair facility and high performance expert within the previous 100 miles and given a totally "Clean Bill of Health" in every area including suspension components, brakes, tires and safety systems (turn signals, lights, back up lights, wipers, etc). All of these items were found to be fully functional and/or exceeding acceptable limits. The owner of the restoration / mechanical facility that completed the inspection commented that "I've never seen a nicer, more unusual frame on restored Ford Torino convertible and a factory 4-speed too"!! COSMETIC CONDITION We may run out of adjectives in describing the cosmetic condition of the Torino convertible. Simply stated the car has received a "cost no object" restoration to a very high standard. We would describe this example as a very light "Resto-Mod" the only exterior change is the addition of more attractive and current wheels and tires. Under the hood, however, the car has the benefit of significant improvements, increased horsepower and drivability. Finally, the engine bay is immaculate and the engine is pure delight to look at!! The condition of the body, paint, interior and trim are exceptional. The car will hold up to the closest scrutiny by collector car enthusiasts and will be well received at any car gathering, show of specialty event. The car was not removed from the frame as the undercarriage since the underside, floor pans and sheet metal were so good (and original). We ask that you review the 100~ photos to get a better sense of the true quality of this particular example. This is finished in a brilliant shade of "Bright Yellow" and the Marti Report shows that it left the factory painted yellow. The interior is a stunning white with a matching white power top. The unusual but extremely attractive contrast certainly typifies muscle cars of the 1970's! The car's interior has been restored to perfection and, as the detailed photographs reflect a high level of attention was paid to ensuring that the dash, seats, carpet, door panels and other parts of the interior have the appearance of being factory fresh. A few aftermarket options (tachometer and wonderful sound system) are welcomed upgrades but in no way detract from the cars appeal. The addition of current spoked wheels and low profile tires give the car a great stance and a contemporary look. For those that desire a more original appearance, stock wheels could easily be located and fitted to the car. EXTERIOR DETAILS With a history of being originally delivered to dry Montana and then California it comes as no surprise that this Torino convertible does not have any rust. The Torino is not only extremely straight but there is no indication of any rust, rot or previous rust repairs. A recent inspection by a muscle car expert restoration facility resulted in the following remarks: "This is one of the cleanest, nicest mid size 70's Fords that I have seen in along, long time"!! The cars underside reflects the quality of the car without a light dusting of dirt but no signs of rust, undercarriage damage or leakage. The suspension is clean and fresh and the car has all new brakes, bushings, mounts and fittings. We ask that you carefully review the photos of the underside that was completed to the same level of quality as the body, interior, top and engine. A close inspection of all of the areas of the car including the usually rust affected areas like the trunk, rocker panels, lower front and rear fenders and engine bay reveal totally solid "California clean" panels. There is no indication of frame damage and all of the suspension components are very fresh and professionally installed. More on that later. The Torino was an excellent candidate for the comprehensive restoration that was completed at considerable expense. The old adage "The Devil is in the Details" has never been more true when it comes to the quality of this car compared with amateur, "garage" restorations, sometimes referred to as "rattle can restorations" (for obvious reasons!). The comprehensive file documents the restoration effort and the work that is outlined in this summary. The panel fit rates very high with even door, trunk and hood gaps. During the restoration, the car received the benefit of completely new door seals, vent window seals and trunk seals. Virtually all of the trim was either replaced using NOS parts, re-chromed original components or high quality parts. As a result of the minimal use (2,000~ since the total restoration) and literally no exposure to the elements, the Torino has spectacular paint work. The paint work was completed with all panels removed, engine bay painted / detailed, trunk refinished and all inner doors, jambs and other parts of the car painted. We can find no noticeable flaws, signs of poor body / paint preparation, paint runs or damage. The cars body and paint rate as close to a 10 as any car that has been driven on the street could. Of course, the car has been garaged for its entire life and received regular professional detailing to ensure that it looked its best at all times for its proud owner. As with the mechanical documentation the car has had the benefit of significant cosmetic improvements, as well. The Torino received the classic body side tape stripe ("Laser Stripe") subsequent to the restoration of the exterior. Certainly, there is no mistaking this as a 1970 GT Torino! INTERIOR CONDITION The interior is equally as nice as the exterior and is in absolutely beautiful condition. The work on the interior was completed by Karma Kreations, specializing in custom interiors and restorations. The cost of re-doing the interior exceeded $6,000 but the investment was well worthwhile. We haven't seen a mid-size car interior this well done in many, many years. The dash is excellent as is the "wood" trim on the steering wheel and other parts of the interior. The white interior is virtually perfect and the contrast draws considerable attention to the car. The interior has benefited from a number of costly improvements (the sound system in particular) but, for the most part, has remained totally stock in its appearance. The AM radio appears to have been restored but is not functional. However, a remote high quality sound system (operated by a corded device) operates the CD player and radio. The trunk contains the high level components resulting in an incredible sound system. The radio is fully functional including a working power antenna on the left rear fender of the car. While it has been in place for many years, we imagine that it has received little use with the owners of the car preferring the sound of the exhaust note over any music from the sound system. The dash is fitted with the stock instruments, all of which are totally functional. The addition of a column mounted, lights tachometer adds a nice period touch. Also, discreet oil (black background / white lettering) is mounted below the dash and reads 75+ lbs when the car is cold and a minimum of 60+ lbs when the car is warm. The speedometer has been recalibrated to be accurate with the addition of the larger wheels & tires. The steering wheel has the proper hub including a functional horn and has been restored to beautiful like new condition. The front and rear seats have been reupholstered beautifully (including the replacement of seat cushions and internal components as needed) the rear seats appear to be original. Both front and rear seats are also in like new condition and totally free from any rips, tears, or signs of wear. It appears as if the rear seat has never been used. The door panels are in excellent condition as is all of the door hardware and trim. The windows roll up smoothly and freely. During the restoration, the car received all new carpet. The heater and defroster systems are fully functional and all of the dash controls appear to have been restored and have clear lettering. The dash has the appearance of a car that was delivered recently. The convertible top was replaced and the white top and the underside ("headliner" are excellent. The power top is functional but slightly slow when it is raised. The top has a glass rear window and has nice alignment to the windows. The windshield has been replaced and is in very good condition with no signs of cracks or damage. The Torino's trunk is spotless and totally free from rust. There is no spare tire or tools. IV. DRIVING THE 1970 TORINO CONVERTIBLE Whether cold or warm the Torino fires up immediately and runs with a slight but obvious "lope." After just a few minutes the car is completely warm and runs perfectly. It doesn't stumble and accelerates smoothly through the gears. The engine is free from any noises and the car does not leak fluids. The clutch engages without fuss and as you shift from first to second gear you notice how solid and tight the car feels. No rattles, squeaks or indication that you're driving a convertible not a coupe. A nice feeling. The car is very comfortable and makes a great "Cruiser" with accommodations for 5! It is comfortable, fun to drive and very quick. The car could be used for an everyday car, occasional weekend car and would be great to show up at the local Friday night car gathering in your town. We can almost guarantee that you'd be the only one with a factory 4-speed Torino convertible!! Once you gain momentum it is clear that this car is considerably faster than a stock 351c.i. V8. As a result of the considerable mechanical improvements, the car runs and drives like a considerably newer Ford. The suspension is excellent having been totally rebuilt as is the braking system that stops the car straight and sure. The emergency brake is properly adjusted and fully functional. While not offensive or overly loud, the Ford has the perfect exhaust note as a result of the addition of a quality exhaust system. The combination of the sound of the powerful 351c.i. V8 and the throaty exhaust, especially in the higher rev ranges, has us reaching to turn off the cars sound system to better hear the car's engine. As the revs rise, the exhaust tone becomes increasingly pleasing. This particular car runs and drives extremely well and is totally sorted and ready to enjoy. The car was professionally built utilizes the best components and the quality of the suspension and mechanical components indicates that relatively few miles have been accumulated since the car was completed. As expected from a restored car with low mileage and updated driveline and suspension, the car runs and drives perfectly. The Torino is a great car to drive and is extremely comfortable under all driving conditions ranging from a daily commute to, well, more spirited activities. And, talk about attracting attention..! The car combines amazing good looks, the "fun to drive" of a 4-speed and good old American car performance and reliability. It's the hot-looking partner that you've been looking for, will enjoy on your first date, and never tire of. V. Please be certain that you are prepared to buy the car if you bid, or call us at 925-846-1451 before the end of the auction if we can answer any questions. If you have a "sunglass" rating or fewer than 10 feedback ratings on eBay, please call us before you bid so that we can discuss the bidding process, etc. If we do not hear from you, we reserve the right to delete your bid. Thank You & Happy Bidding Classic Cars Ltd.
