HISTORY: This is a BMW 740i ///M-Sport. I acquired this car about a month ago as a replacement. It had sat for about four to five months with only the occasional drive around the neighbourhood by the previous owner. The car was running, however it had the SES (Service Engine Light) on and needed a few things. Due to the SES light, the car could not be smogged in California - it would have failed. The car has the very appealing Anthrazit Metallic grey colour - one of the most beautiful colours on the BMW E38 7-Series. The interior is in exceptional condition as well. The car had a few niggling issues to be sorted out - Camshaft Sensors, Radiator, ABS Module, Rear Window Regulators, Front Bumper mis-aligned, etc. I acquired the car with the objective of putting it right and keeping it. I have since worked on it and replaced most of the faulty parts and components and cleaned it up significantly. Unfortunately, the SES light is still on, but I think it is close to be completely diagnosed and fixed. However, at this point I no longer want to continue with the work as I found an alternative car that better suits my needs. I have paid the registration and all the paperwork is up to date, however the complete registration is still pending awaiting a Smog Certificate. I am offering the car up for sale this time only to anyone who is either a pretty handy DIY person who can finish the work on it to someone willing to get it done. Should it not sell, my intention will be to part it out - which would be a shame as it is quite a great looking car. The car is by no means a dog or Jalopy. It has made two trips to Southern California quite competently and has much more life left in it. I am just not in a position to keep it. SPECIFICATIONS: The car is one of the very popular ///M-Sport versions of the E38 7-Series from BMW. It comes with upgraded suspension, seats, steering wheel, transmission (Steptronic) and shorter geared rear differential. It also came with "Shadowline" trim for a sportier look as well as electric power folding mirrors and navigation. The Sport Package first became available in 1999. It drives very nicely with enough sporty performance to put a grin on any driver's face. ENGINE & DRIVETRAIN:Being a BMW E38 740i M-Sport model, the car comes with the torquey BMW M62TUB44 VANOS 4.4L V8 engine. Performance numbers were 282 BHP and 325 Ibs-Ft of Torque. This engine coupled with the Steptronic Transmission, a higher stall-speed torque converter and a higher 3:15 Final Drive Ratio helped move the ///M-Sport of the line with amazing zip and agility. Gas mileage while not the most frugal of it's time can be an impressive 25.2 MPG on long highway trips and 16 - 18 MPG with city driving. CONDITION & CURRENT STATUS: As I mentioned from the start, I acquired this car knowing full well that it had some maintenance items that had to be attended to. I immediately set about putting things in order. It received an oil change and was filled with Mobil 1 5W-40 Fully Synthetic oil - which is recommended by BMW and is known to help the VANOS components. I installed a brand new radiator along with new hoses, fan and clutch, coolant reservoir bottle and new fan shroud. The coolant system was also completely flushed and replenished with a 50/50 mix of BMW Coolant. The work did not stop there. There were other things to resolve. The speedometer was not working along with the Fuel Efficiency gauge. This is symptomatic of a faulty ABS module. Also, it still had the SES (Service Engine Light) indicated - the fault code was 0021 which indicated a faulty Camshaft Sensor on one bank of cylinders. I replaced the faulty ABS Module which fixed things like the speedometer and fuel efficiency gauge. It still need to be properly coded to the car, thus the ABS and BRAKE LIGHT are still on in the dash. I also replaced BOTH Camshaft Sensors with brand new components along with new spark plugs along with the two Cabin Micro AirFilters. Unfortunately, I am still can't get the SES light to shut off. I am now checking if it might be the VANOS Solenoid which I am about to place this weekend, and possibly the Right Side Valve Cover Gasket which leaks. Mechanically, the car works and run astonishingly well. It has all it's power and has never stalled or anything like that. It was not only the engine that received attention, I also replaced both rear window regulators, it got a new set of fog lamps, new Driver's Side inner fender lining, new side under engine covers - All BMW OEM parts from SFO BMW amongst others. It has new blade wipers as well. The car came with many receipts and proof of prior service history. Some of this was done by Sonnen BMW of San Rafael. The car had been maintained. It just had this one niggling item to resolve. As I said, my options are to either sell or part it out. Hopefully, someone will be able to acquire this as their own either within California or possibly in a state with different emissions requirements. The car has been a California car all it's life so there is no rust / corrosion whatsoever and it comes with a clean CA title. On Mar-06-12 at 18:11:09 PST, seller added the following information: NEW UPDATE: So, I gave the car one more shot and replaced the faulty Cam Shaft Position Sensor and hey presto! The SERVICE ENGINE SOON light went out. I drove the car a whole day just to be sure it was not a fluke. Today the car passed CA Smog and I have the certificate which is valid for 90 days for for Ownership transfer. So, anyone can acquire this car now - from CA to NY. On Mar-08-12 at 23:14:05 PST, seller added the following information: FINAL EDIT / ADDENDUM: I forgot to mention, I have the complete owner's manual for this car down to the Owner's Manual for the Navigation System all in good condition in their zippered leather case. I also have three keys for the car. The two master remote keys and a spare key. I was able to dig up a set of Black Floor mats, so you don't have to take it home with the Tan ones if you don't want to. The Black ones are available - complete included in the sale. Cheers!
