Vehicle Detail
NO RESERVE - 1964 Pontiac 389 V-8, Tri-Power, 8 Lug Wheels. This is a fast and fun car to drive that gets lots of attention everywhere it goes. According to PHS history, it was sold new in 1964 at Roseburg Motor Company in Roseburg, Oregon. This Grand Prix spent its entire life in Oregon and its mostly rust-free condition reflects that. Recently acquired from the second owner in Milwaukie, Oregon and shipped to its current location. This Grand Prix has all the basic equipment seen on most Grand Prix’s, plus P20 Aluminum Brake Drums – Eight Lug Wheels. It did not come equipped with power brakes or Tri-Power. At some point, the original engine was replaced with a rebuilt 1962 389 4 bbl engine, with a new Tri-Power set up recently added by previous owner. BODY & FRAME No bondo or patch panels seen. This Grand Prix was repainted a slightly lights shade of dark blue (originally Nocturn Blue) during the mid 90s. The paint is shinny and looks great. The paint is cracking around the passenger door handle, there is a two inch scratch in the passenger rear quarter panel and there are a few rust bubbles forming on the lower left rear quarter panel behind the left rear wheel. The middle of the trunk pan is weak with a small fiberglass patch, apparently from water entering the trunk from either around the rear window or from around the trunk lid. The trunk pan is usable as-is. The trunk has a new liner and side panels. There is some dust in the paint on the trunk, but you have to look close to see it. Overall, the paint is in decent shape to use as a daily driver. However, it would not take much effort to freshen it up with a complete re-spray for a show finish as the body is amazingly straight and rust free. The frame, inner wheel wells, rockers, floor pans, fenders, quarters, doors, hood, trunk, and rear panel are in excellent shape with no visible signs of repairs or damage. The doors, hood and trunk open and shut well and all windows roll up and down with ease and all glass is in great shape. The exterior chrome, including the bumpers, is in great shape. INTERIOR The interior has newer carpet, floor mats and package tray, installed by prior owner. The original seats, dash pad, door panels, headliner are in excellent shape. The carpeting on the door panels is in good condition but has faded and should be re-dyed to be like new. There is a small seam split in the driver’s side seat back. The interior chrome is in great condition. The center console, shifter and console door are present and functioning, but are starting to show their age. All lights work and the heater and blower motor work. New windshield wiper motor installed by current owner. The AM radio and horn do not work. The wood grain inserts on the dash and steering wheel need replaced and the steering wheel is cracked. The odometer shows 90,000 miles but I am unsure if it is accurate. The speedometer needle bounces around at times. SUSPENSION, BRAKES, & TIRES. Wow – those 8 lug wheels sure look great! The tires are new reproduction BF Goodrich Silver Town Bias Plys which give it that period correct look and stance. However, at highway speeds the bias ply tires leave a lot to be desired as they produce some vibration and cause the car to wander when uneven road surfaces are encountered. I think this car deserves a set of radial tires so that extended highway use can be more enjoyable. The front and rear brakes and many of the suspension components were replaced by the prior owner. I replaced one lower ball joint, installed four new shocks, had the front wheels aligned and the brakes adjusted. The non-power drum brakes require some pre-planning when making stops because of their design limitations. DRIVETRAIN The engine starts easily, runs great and idles good, has good oil pressure at idle and at speed. It does not smoke, leak, run hot or make strange noises. It is fast and fun to drive with a newer performance dual exhaust system which sounds great. The Tri-Power is obviously new or rebuilt and works great. The previous owner reports that the engine was completely rebuilt. It runs very well and may have been rebuilt as represented. It has a new battery. After extended use, the starter motor will occasionally fail to engage when the engine is hot. I suspect it may need to be replaced in the future, but for now it is working. The transmission appears to be the original hydromatic. When driving around town, I prefer to manually shift it and drive it in 2nd gear at speeds below 40 MPH because it tends to up-shift too soon which causes the engine to bog down. The transmission does not automatically downshift from third to second gear if you are traveling at speeds above 30 MPH and accelerate heavily. The kick-down cable is present, but may not be doing its job. I manually down-shift it and that gets the job done. The transmission downshifts on its own at lower speeds as it should. Although the hydromatic transmission acts as it should and does not slip, I am not a fan of this type of automatic transmission and much prefer the turbo 400 which was installed on 1965 models. It has a non-posi rear end. This is a NO RESERVE auction. No trades, no phone calls, no deals before the auction ends, no in person previews. Zero feedback bidders will be blocked and their bids cancelled. I reserve the right to block and cancel bids from bidders with a feed back score of less than 5. I have PHS and clear title in my name which matches the VIN on the car. A $500 deposit via PayPal is due within 48 hours of the close of the auction, with the remainder of the purchase price due within seven days of the close of the auction by cashier’s check or wire transfer. The vehicle will not be released until funds have been received and a sufficient number of days have passed to permit my bank to verify the funds. The vehicle must be picked up within thirty days of the auction. Thank you for your interest.
