Vehicle Detail
1989 BMW 325i Convertible 2.5L 6-cylinder, 5-spd manual New Convertible Top installed in July My dad has asked me to run an auction on this car for him since he does not use the internet. He bought the car back in late-June, and I used it for a few weeks in July while I was visiting, before I moved back to Baltimore permanently. I really love these old E30 BMWs, they're a very distinctive car, and fun to drive. I had a blast driving this one around the Baltimore area with the top down over the summer. We put a brand new top on it, and initially I was going to save this BMW for some overseas friends that wanted to buy an old convertible for a trip across the US. My friends changed their plans, so my dad got it MD-state inspected and put it on his car lot. By that time, however, winter was approaching, so no one wanted to buy a convertible, and the manual transmission scared off most prospective buyers. Seems like no one in the US learns how to drive a stick nowadays. The inspection certificate has since run out, but because this car is more than 20 years old, it can be sold as “historic.” As it says above, this is a 1989 325i convertible with the 2.5L straight 6, and 5-spd manual transmission. The convertible top is new. The tires are all good. The car also looks like it has all the electric options available: windows, mirrors, heated seats, central locking, and cruise control. I have not checked the cruise control or the heated seats, but the rest of these options all work. This car also has a working dash computer that lets you check things like: outdoor temperature, average mph, fuel economy, and it has a “race timer.” The original radio works, but is showing the word “code” on the display, which means that you have to call a BMW dealership and give them the VIN, and they will give you the security code to unlock it. The heater works perfectly, but the A/C probably needs a charge. The overall condition of this car is average given the age. It is in good condition mechanically, but needs cosmetic work on the interior and on the body to make it perfect. The engine runs well, has plenty of power, and sounds great to rev up. It looks like the radiator was replaced not long ago. The clutch feels good and the shifter is not sloppy. The car's faults lie with the body and the interior. The body has a number of little dings here and there, as well as some bad spots in the paint, and a few rust spots. The pictures posted here came out a bit too well and make the paint look perfect, so I tried to get some close-up shots of the rough areas. There are some dings on the hood and sides, a dent on the front corner on the driver's side, and some surface rust spots on the trunk lid. On the interior, there are some cracks in the dash, the glove box is missing, the driver's seat has a few tears on it underneath the seat cover, and the rear seat has some tears in it. Also, the handle that releases the panel that covers the convertible top has broke – not the cables, they are still intact, just the handle. Other than that, the lock on the driver's door is damaged, but the central locking can be operated when using the passenger's door lock or the trunk lock. Basically, this is a good car, and with a bit of work on the body and interior, you will have a really smart looking little European convertible. Or just keep it mechanically sound and tool around in it as is, pretending to be Frank Moody. One thing I enjoyed over the summer was being able to park somewhere and leave it with the top and windows down for a couple of hours, and not feeling worried that someone was going to mess with it. It's getting hard to find a decent one of these E30 3-series BMWs. Most are either ragged out, smashed up or rusted to pieces, so this one would be good to grab up, and now is the perfect time to get one for summer. I have set the reserve at the lowest price my dad could take, not some pie in the sky dream price, so it is reasonable. PLEASE READ: This car is sold AS IS, with NO WARRANTY. Please examine the supersized photos, and contact me if you have any questions. Serious bidders are welcome to come see / drive the car, just give me notice ahead of time so I can adjust my schedule. This car is not MD-state inspected. It is over 20 years old, so if the buyer is a MD resident, the car will be sold as historic. If the buyer is a MD resident, then the state requires a tax of 6% and a title processing fee of $100. This money goes to the government - not us! It does not apply if the winning bidder is not a Maryland resident. Payment is to be made in CASH at pick-up. Winning bidder must contact me within 24 hours of the end of the auction. The car must be picked up within 1 week of the end of the auction. Bidders with zero or negative feedback, and overseas bidders, must contact me prior to bidding – I will delete your bids otherwise.
