Vehicle Detail
The 1972 Z was the 2nd year of full production. This is the car that put Japanese sports car to the world stage. It had the performance of a Porche at a bargin price. It has design elements of the famous Jaguar E-type. I bought this car in Florida in 1999. I believe I am the third owner. I have not driven the car for a couple of years. I ran well the last time I drove it. I have always wanted to restore and keep this great car. It is totally stock. It has a/c which I don't know if it was factory option or not. It may have been added by the dealer. The a/c would need service although it worked the last time I drove the car.. The tires-Goodyear Regatta's- only have about 4-5k miles on them. It has been kept in either in a carport in Florida or in the garage since I have lived in Tennessee There are some rust spots, but nothing serious considering the age of the car. It has a Momo steering wheel (I have the original wheel), non-stock wheels. The best thing to do is to contact me for more information if you are interested. I have many more photos. I would like to sell to someone who likes this car and would restore it. I am putting this car up for bid on e-bay also in a one week auction. On Feb-01-12 at 09:08:31 PST, seller added the following information: Here is all I can remember about this car. If you still have questions let me know. I have put photos of all of the problem rust areas that I know of. I haven't taken up the rugs or looked behind door panels, but I don't believe that there is anything wrong with these areas. The battery tray is often a problem area ever since I have had the car it has had a plastic tray underneath the battery so that the acid/water will not cause it to rust. I believe this area to be ok also. The car has not been in an accident since I have owned it and it was owned by a friend of mine when I bought it. He was a really big Z/Datsun fan and this was his 2nd Z=he really took good care of his cars. There is a small dent (see photo) above the left rear wheel well that should be able to be taken care of without much trouble. As far as I know the car has never been in a wreck and from what I have seen there is no evidence of body repair or bondo. The front window has started to delaminate just because of age. It should be replaced. The car ran the last time I drove it w/no problem except the brakes needed to be bled or ? They were a little soft. I had the master cylinder rebuilt but the brakes still was never quite the way I thought they should be. I replaced the radiator about 2002 w/new coolant and thermostat. I always used 100% synthetic oil in changing the oil w/new filter. About the same time I put in a new radiator I replaced the gear oil in the transmission w/full synthetic gear oil. The clutch and transmission worked fine. All of guages except the clock worked and seemed to be accurate. The interior, I believe, was recovered by my friend and doesn't have any rips or tears that I can see. Electrical; everything works except the radio. I was going to replace the radio, but the only ones I could find at the time were ones that would require modifying the dash to install. I didn't want to do that. I would rather just listen to the car; music to the ears. The engine ran strong and shortly before I stopped driving the car I was able to get the car up to 125+ mph. Everything seemed to be stable at that speed. If I recall correctly, the engine that Datsun/Nissan used in this car was a copy of an Mercedes-Benz engine. I have heard of people getting well over 200k miles with this engine if properly taken care of. The carbs should be rebuilt although they seemed to work ok as long as the oil in them was at the proper level. When I bought the car it had what we called a 10ft paint job. It looked ok from 10 ft, but if you got closer you could see that it was failing/cracking. The car had been repainted once before I bought it. When I don't know. The windows go up and down w/no problems. All of the gaskets around the doors, hatch, etc. should be replaced-old rubber only lasts so long. There are black plastic inserts in the bumpers that are deteriorating. If you rub against them they leave a black residue. If I were to keep the car and get it running again these are the things I would do first (if I had the time/$$/ability/health); change all fluids, new plugs/points/ condenser, new battery (one in the car now is dead), take out the old gasoline (I put in Stabil but the gas is old), go through the brakes, rotate and rebalance the tires, check the shocks/suspension/steering. It all depends how much time/$ you want to put into this car. Why am I selling it? I am a disabled veteran and can no longer get under cars or do the physical thing necessary to do the work. I have never been a very good mechanic anyway so I don't have the skills/knowledge to accomplish much of the work and would have to pay someone to do it. I don't have the money. My wife wanted something newer so a month ago we bought a Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6 that is more comfortable. The old Z's are what I used to call an honest/real car. Open the hood and there are not any mysteries or hidden things. It's all there without the smog pumps, sensors, crap, etc. that is on all of the new cars. It doesn't have electronic ignition so I will include my old timing light w/the car. lol It is just time for someone else to enjoy this car. I hope the new owner loves this car as much as I have. I wanted one since the first time I saw it on the cover of car magazines when it first came out. But for everything there is a season.....On Feb-01-12 at 11:44:24 PST, seller added the following information: I keep on thinking of things that bidders may want to know about. Although the tires are in great shape, they are a little wider than they should be and when the the steering is at the extreme left or right lock they rub a little on the wheel well. They have changed the size nomenclature since this car was made and this was as close as I could get in the short time I had when I moved up from Florida. The Goodyear's on the car are 185/75R14's. The radio antenna was a power up/down type but it was broken in a parking lot by someone and I replaced it w/the small one you can see. No power up/down. All of the lenses; stop, turn signals, etc. have no cracks or damage to them. All of the chrome is in ok shape considering the age and is all original as far as I know. Added to the replacement list above that I would do is a new ignition coil. The one on the car worked but it was on my list to replace just because it is old and looks crappy. I will continue to add to this discription area as I think of new things or to answer any questions bidders may have. On Feb-03-12 at 12:10:39 PST, seller added the following information: Some people have requested photos of VIN and title so I have taken a few photos off and put those requests on the auction page. I have also add a photo of the battery tray area that many inquired about. As you can see there is very little problems here as far as rust is concerned. On Feb-03-12 at 18:21:56 PST, seller added the following information: Please go to: http://s813.photobucket.com/albums/zz59/dskul1/?start=all to see more photos and 3 short videos. EBay doesn't allow more than 24 photos per auction and once you select those 24, you cannot change them. I will update this auction @ Photobucket if anyone requests anymore photos. Thanks!
