Vehicle Detail
This 1962 Plymouth Fury was bought new at River Oaks Chrysler-Plymouth in Houston, Texas. Owned by the same old lady until about 10 years ago. I bought it from the second owner and brought it up to daily use standards. It has recently turned 70,000 actual miles. The 318 V-8 runs well, has good power, but the power brake booster has a vacuum leak inside the booster, and this causes the car to lope or miss at idle. If you block off the power brake vacuum hose, the car idles perfectly. Booster needs to be sent off and rebuilt. The car is well equipped, with power brakes, power steering, factory A/C, AM radio, push-button automatic transmission, electric clock (works now and then), tinted windows, padded dashboard (optional in 1962), and full wheel covers. In the past year, the car has received 4 new tires, new A/C hose, new A/C dryer, new fan belts, new water pump, new valve cover gaskets, new radiator hoses, and a new paint job. I had it repainted this past summer in the original color because there were several "little old lady" parking lot dings and scrapes. It's not an expensive paint job, and it will be improved if you will wet-sand it and rub it out with 1000-grit or 2000-grit sandpaper. The interior is totally original and you can see that the driver's seat cushion has some rips--the rest of the interior is very nice. The car has been in a garage or a carport all of its life. The interior and the weatherstrip are not sun-baked like so many Texas cars are. The top of the back seat is nice. The package shelf is nice. Door panels are nice, dashboard pads are not cracked, headliner is good, carpet is good. All doors fit well , close nicely, and all windows go up and down nicely. The 318 really gets up and moves this car if necessary, due to its relatively modest size and weight, compared to other full sized 1962 cars. It also gets pretty decent gas mileage on regular gas. Original owner's manual and several maintenance receipts are in the glove box. Trunk and floors are rock solid on this car. It has never been driven in salt. Transmission shifts well. Radiator does not overheat. All guages work--clock works when it wants to. Air conditioner worked briefly last summer, but Freon leaked out. I then replaced the cracked A/C hose, but the hot weather was over, so I didn't recharge it. I think I fixed the leak and it should be fine next season when recharged. The car has an auxiliary electric fuel pump operated by a push button hidden under the dash, to prime the fuel system after the car has sat a few days. After you prime it for half a minute and release the button, the car starts right up and runs fine on the mechanical pump. Car is currently licensed and can be driven anywhere. This was Plymouth's top-of-the-line car in 1962 and not many were saved. This one is in great shape for 50 years old!
