Vehicle Detail
1960 De Soto Fireflite 2-door hardtop361 V8, Powerflite pushbutton automaticNo Reserve Up for bid is my 1960 DeSoto Fireflite hardtop, with a newly rebuilt 361 V8, plus Powerflite (2-speed) pushbutton automatic transmission. She runs and drives really well, and gets plenty of attention. I've owned her for about 10 years now, and have had my fun, and now its time to let her go. Mechanically, she is very good. I have rebuilt the engine last October, including a new starter, new battery, new gas tank, new 15-inch tires, and rebuilt the carburetor (I apologize that I say "new" carburetor in the video, it is rebuilt, not new.) The car has been roadworthy since about 2005, and I have replaced or rebuilt many components since then. I had the radiator re-cored in '05, replaced the exhaust and muffler in March '08, completely rebuilt the brakes (new master cylinder, all wheel cyls, hoses, and shoes) in 2007. On the video, I also mistakenly said '05 for the brakes, it was '07. She drives well, perhaps her finest feature in fact, but the generator may require a rebuild soon. Also, the parking brake does not work, so a brick is necessary. The brakes are functional, but unless you are accustomed to an old car's brakes, they will take getting used to, they are non-power brakes. Otherwise, she drives out nice and strong. She had factory air conditioning, but most components are long gone. Also, the heater is disconnected and has been as long as I've owned her, so it's condition is unknown. The speedometer and odometer do not work, nor the gas gauge and radio. The wipers and lights work fine. The power steering works well, too. The body is rough. She is wearing mostly original paint, there is rust in the rear quarters, and a gash on the lower passenger door and quarter. There is some filler in the passenger fender above the headlights, looks to have been done a long time ago. The hood is solid, however, the trunk lid is badly rusted, as well as the trunk lip. I put in sheet metal with bracing many years ago in the floorboards and the trunk floor, it is functional and sturdy, but amateur at best. Sorry about that. I've tried to capture the body condition in the photos. If you would like any other specific photos, please email me. If you are planning a full 'concours' restoration, there are probably better cars out there, I want to be honest. Overall, the body is rough, but completely functional. I enjoy not having to worry about parking in lots or getting caught in the rain. The interior is nice, I had the seats recovered in '06, with the a similar-but-not-quite style and pattern. The door panels are SMS, and original style. I replaced the carpet then as well, but it has since faded and is no longer nice. The dashboard could use a respray if desired, it has some age spots. Also, I never did anything with the headliner. I also installed 4 lap seatbelts, front and back. I've attached a link below to a video of me driving the car, to show that she does perform quite well. I apologize for the two errors I tell in the video (the carb being new and the brakes done in '05), this is my first time making a video, I was a little intimidated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqxUwGRvXq8&context=C35dfc97ADOEgsToPDskKcgSi3bKlUpIn7trghzezl If the above link does not work, please search my Youtube ID, 1972chaser. Overall, she is a fun car and a unique driver. I would not, however, plan to drive her across country without getting accustomed to her first. I have replaced many components, but there are some that are still 52 years old. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I will do my best to answer. I am located in the middle of Georgia, just above Macon, just off of Interstate 75. Georgia does not issue titles for cars older than 1964, so she will be sold on a bill of sale only. She is registered, tagged, and insured in my name, so there should be no problems. This is a no reserve auction, so please bid intentionally and responsibly. I am needing to scale back on the number of old cars that I own, so I hope the DeSoto can go to a good home. I've also listed my '58 Plymouth in another auction. I reserve the right to end the auction early if needed.
