Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on a 1972 Datsun 240z. I purchased this car from the second owner in December 2009. He bought the car in 1976 from the original owner, who lived in Campbell, CA (I have the original Datsun Warranty card for the owner), so I am the third owner, and I've kept it garaged since I purchased it. The second owner provided me with quite a bit of documentation on repairs over the years he owned it. When I bought the car, my intention was to get it really roadworthy and just drive occasionally. I was impressed by the limited ownership, extensive repair documentation, and the fact that it started and ran! I also noted that it had the original dealer installed/integrated A/C system (which I eventually got operational/converted to R134a). The second owner had replaced the original 4-spd transmission with a 5–spd, which really helps keep the revs down on the highway. Also, the dash only had one crack in it, fairly rare for these cars (look at the pics - not a dash cap). I filled it and it looks ok/not perfect. I ended up going further with this car than I had planned – and just kept doing things to improve appearance and operation. Here is a list of most of the items I purchased and installed. Battery Battery Hold downs Fuel Filter Electric Fuel Pump (in place of mechanical pump) Z therapy Carbs and Linkage – (over $600!) Door bumpers (2) Rechromed Bumpers – ($500!) Carb Insulators (2) Foot rest rubber pad Chrome Wheel Center Caps (4) Chrome Wheel Nuts (16) Tie Rod/Rack ends (2) Clutch Slave Cylinder Reman Distributor NGK 6637 Spark Plugs (4) Distributor Cap Spark Plug Wires Ignition Rotor Brake Caliper (Left) Thermostat Coolant overflow tank Interior Rivets Petronix Ignitor electronic ignition Coil - Petronix Flamethrower Coil Bracket Gear Reduction Starter Reman (80 280zx) Alternator - Internal Reg (80 280zx) Alternator Conversion Connector Wheel Center Emblems Z (4) Door Weatherstrip (Left/Right) Hood to Cowl Seal Speakers (2) Valve Cover Gasket Sway Bar Bushing Set Clutch Fork Boot Receiver/Dryer A/C High/Low Safety Switch Carpet Set, Black - 5 piece Seat Covers - butterscotch Aluminum Slot Alloy Wheels (4- used) AM/FM/CD Player Power Antenna Chrome Exhaust Tip Datsun Emblem Deck Datsun Emblem Fender (used) Datsun Emblem Hood Intake/Exhaust Combo Gasket Quarter Repair Panel Brake Pads The car is still the original green, Code 113 – probably about 60% is still original paint, but of course there are the typical small dents and scratches that would occur over almost 40 years and 140,000 miles. There were typical Z rust areas that I repaired mostly with welded sheet metal and fiberglass (no screen and bondo!). I used the factory paint code to have single stage paint mixed, and applied to protect the repairs. There are still some minor areas that need attention. To make the car exceptionally nice, you would want to refinish the entire car. This car is very drivable at this point - most people would be impressed – but it is far from a show car. I have found that pictures always look a little better than the real thing, so please take that in consideration when bidding. It’s always best to see the car in person if possible. Please read the description carefully and examinie the pictures. If you have a question - ask before you bid - after is too late. What else would I do if I were to keep it? From a mechanical standpoint, I would probably look at replacing the timing chain – I’ve adjusted for stretch, but probably should swap it out. The tires have good tread, but are older, and likely should be replaced with a more modern tire for safety, ride, and handling. Still not sure if I would repaint it. On the rare occasions I take this car out, I get plenty of attention. People pull up to me and take pictures with their cell phones. I had a gentlemen wait for me to come out of a store so he could talk to me about the car. My starting price is below just above the parts/services cost alone, and the Buy It Now is reflective of a weak market overall, so I think this car can be purchased at a reasonable price so happy bidding! One correction - I did not replace both the left and right rack/tie rod ends, I replaced the right tie rod end and the right lower ball joint. The videos below show a COLD start up and a WARM start up. The engine is original to the car and has not been rebuilt - I only had the valve cover off to adjust the valves - it runs very well for a 142K mile 40 year old engine.
