Vehicle Detail
this cyclone can stay here in the states or ....if you're out of the country - i am willing to help get the car ready for your transporting. there's cyclones all over the world nowdays - thats why i mentioned it - im totally ok with it going overseas. Hello everyone - you're looking at a very cool mercury muscle machine right here that i have invested many years and a big pile of money into off and on since 1991 ! i really am unhappy to be in the position to have to offer this car for sale now , but i will go ahead and tell you everything about the car that i can think of to type and i can also tell you even more on the phone plus i have many many more pictures of the car that i can email including the rust-free undercarriage. (( i also can have copies made of some old pictures of this car )) most of my friends call me cyclone-steve as ive owned quite a few over the years but this car has always been my favorite one to own and to drive. it has great road manners and is very very reliable ..... this is 1 fun cyclone ! i live in north dallas in the zip code 75234 ( city of farmers branch ) and my phone number is 972-655-8134 also...i am only 15 minutes away from D/FW Airport or dallas love field airport and i welcome / encourage you to come on out and check out the car in person and we can go for a drive too. I HAVE MADE several videos of this car showing it inside and out plus underneath and driving by and etc... these videos are all on you--tube now for your viewing .... just get onto the you tube website and enter - 1971 cyclone gt - and look for all 6 + videos of the bright grabber green car posted by me...mrsteve4290 on that site. to summarize this car.... rare and unique musclecar that is sweet sounding & awesome looking that was built to drive and cruise down the highway with its new 5 speed and also is a big hit at any car show you take it to ! its loud , it has awesome oil pressure , never runs hot , fun manual transmission , flashy paint job , nice deluxe interior , a very nice looking car just the way it is but if youre a perfectionist like me... theres still work to be done / redone if you want to make it flawless. i did the paint-job back in 1992 while working at a great european paint/body shop and the color is the factory-optional 1971 ford / mercury color of " grabber green metallic " and we added just a little bit of pearl to it to get this awesome flashy color that fits the car so well. i just recently completed a real nice new engine for the car ( which is very stock boss 351 appearing under the hood ) but has a lot of high-performance upgrades on the inside - its the 351 cleveland 4v engine w new 393 stroker kit inside and is a serious engine that was built to be street and cruising friendly and has just low enough compression to allow regular pump gas ( super unleaded ) and i spent a lot of time completely detailing the engine bay down to re-plating original hardware and spent many hours cleaning every wire and vacuum hose to make everything look new again ! ** too many new parts and features of this car and extra parts to list in this ad** call me you can cruise on the highway at 65-70 mph in 5th gear and the engine is at 2200 rpms and ive noticed that im never having to press on the gas pedal hardly - im not sure what kind of gas mileage im getting as i havent driven it enough or tracked it but its doing quite well ! here's all of the details organized into sections - the car has so many new and/or restored parts on it now that i cant possibly list everything in this ad. ENGINE...... ive been working for a speed / machine shop for a while now and had the master engine builder (of over 40 years) machine and build this engine for me ! has apprx 400 miles so far on this professionally built & balanced 351 cleveland 4 v motor starting off with a fresh .30 over & decked 4-bolt main engine block that has a very high nickel content and is a great strong block. 393 stroker crank kit , i beam rods w forged probe pistons & file-fit moly rings. pistons have slight dish design to end up with the right compression using these closed chambered boss 351 heads. heads have the screw in studs / guide plates , and my good friend who has been porting and working on ford heads for 30 years did a nice " street " light port and polish / bowl job then new stainless valves w hardened seats and bronze guides. i also installed the exhaust port plates for more torque and street driving rpm's. final compression ratio is apprx 9 6or7 to1 and is perfect for running pump gas. 4 bolt main caps have new arp studs / bolts along with a windage tray by milodon , high volume oil pump , deep sump milodon pan , pete jackson gear drive , crane hyd # cd 133132 cam / lifters / matching valve springs , crane roller rocker arms , new blue thunder intake manifold ,new arp head bolts , original boss 351 valve covers detailed , new timing cover , new high flow water pump , all new bolts inside and out including silver-cad plated intake bolts. original set of boss 351 single groove underdriven pulleys including the unique 71 alt pulley. also has nice aftermarket crank harmonic dampner / brass freeze plugs / and was de-burred inside and the outside before painting the original dark ford blue . other things mechanical include --- beautiful silver ceramic coated hooker super-competition headers , barry grant 750 cfm double pumper carb w 4 corner idle ( tricky to tune just right ) , all new cooling system and found an original 1971 cyclone / torino 429 cobra jet radiator and had it professionally restored w new core ( 3 row ) and has more fins per inch now , electronic ignition system is a nice mix of a new ford duraspark distributor being triggered by a hidden msd / crane ignition box and using the msd blaster coil. holley mechanical fuel pump is one of the only older parts that i reused on this engine as most everything else under the hood and on the motor is new. new battery , new stock detailed alternator , spent apprx 10 hours cleaning and polishing the original fan shroud for the radiator - used new 7 blade balanced fan by flexalite , new starter , new old stock battery ground cable which is very unique for these cars, all new hoses and everything is super-detailed and the best thing of it all ....ENGINE HAS NO LEAKS !! so it will stay looking great ! just wipe off the dust and maybe rub some polish on the valve cover fins every once in a while. also that's a real factory ford rev-limiter mounted on the pass side shock tower which was removed from a 1971 boss 351 mustang ( matches the engine ) it is not connected to the engine.....instead the modern-day ignition controller inside of the glovebox has a rev-limiter chip in it. TRANSMISSION / CLUTCH / REAR AXLE.... this car was originally an automatic , but i was able to find a perfect 1971 torino cobra 4 speed parts car back around 1992 and did the whole conversion including installing the correct and very nice 4-speed console. flash forward to right now..... now the car has a new " crate " transmission which is the famous Tremec TKO 5 speed and also has a new hydraulic clutch conversion kit by mcleod which is the way to go ! new centerforce billet steel flywheel , nice & new clutch disc and pressure plate made by McLeod - which is excellent to drive with and i have even been in a couple of stop and go traffic jams and this clutch doesnt ever chatter like so many other brands will do when hot. also...freshly balanced driveshaft connected to its older rebuilt 4.10 traction-lock diff in the 9" rearend ..it leaks a little - enough to leave quarter sized spots on the garage floor when parked , so ive gotten used to checking its oil level every once in a while , in fact.... i can fix this for the new owner if you like as i work for a hot-rod shop which builds and sets up rear-ends and i can have have it completely re-sealed and installed back in the car within 1 weeks time frame--- however i would need a little extra money for this - i would only charge you 100 dollars to help me pay for the parts and some of the labor. i just rebuilt the pedal assembly with nos ford bushings and nos ford stainless steel pedal pad trim rings - not the repro's that rust up. it wasnt cheap , but i have always saved up my money to buy the best parts and pieces available for this particular cyclone. INTERIOR..... i recently took some time and completely removed and properly restored the lower dashboard and had it professionally re-painted in black w grey metallic flakes and then used flat-clearcoat to duplicate that factory finish + i then assembled it all using some new and some perfect used items such as the a/c vents w the raised chrome edges , all chrome knobs and switches are mint and original cigar lighter works great - i also installed the rare optional am-fm stereo in the dash but didnt hook it up - its just there for good looks. . the dashpad has already been restored by just-dashes which costs around 1400 to have done nowdays ! i installed a new old stock clock in its 140 mph speedometer cluster ( speedo works & has been calibrated for the car so it is accurate ) fuel gauge works , i custom installed a new set of stewart warner green-line gauges into the factory rally gauge dash and it is also using a more accurate tachometer made by vdo but its the same size as the original one and even has the redline pointer needle on it too. car has a very nice black deluxe interior --- nothing in this interior has been dyed or painted ! it is all super- nice original black interior pieces that i installed including a new headliner , i just installed another new set of acc carpet since the last carpet set was fading. all of the details are very very nice including the mint condition and very rare 1971 rear package tray w factory rear speaker hole patterns and i have a new set of alpine 6x9 speakers installed under it. also have some nice infinity speakers in the front kick panels - i was planning on buying the "secret-audio system" from custom autosound but i ran out of money - speaker wires are all terminated under the pass seat for installing the secret audio unit under the seat which is where you would want to install the custom-autosound hidden stereo unit and then it works from a wireless remote controller that can be pointed anywhere and it will work. SEATS..... drivers seat has a tear on the side bolster where your back / jeans rub it getting in and out and the comfortweave on the bottom part is showing its age ----but luckily i have another original seat w perfect comfotweave to restore this seat with so it will still be a perfect match to the mint condition comfortweave materials on the passenger and back seats - those seats are in mint condition ! nice clean seatbelts too front and rear - i always buckle up the lap belt when i go for a drive , back when i installed the new headliner...i left the seperate shoulder harness straps off of the car but i still have them if you wish to put them back in - i just dont like the way they hang down when not in use. DOOR PANELS..... i swapped the door panels over to this very nice set removed from a 1970 cyclone spoiler --i have always liked this style of cyclone door panel better than factory 71 moulded panels since these have the cool cyclone badges that match the steering wheel center ! theyre in great shape and these along with all of the other original interior parts still have a nice luster to them as nothing was sun damaged and nothing in this interior has been dyed. CONSOLE.... factory black 4 speed console in excellent condition that i spent many many hours making / building a custom new shifter plate to work with the new 5 speed shifter location which sits a few inches back from where the old 4 speed shifter was. i took both a 4 speed shifter plate and removed the chrome shifter surround piece and then carefully trimmed and installed it into an auto shifter plate and put it all together with new upper and lower boots and it looks factory again now ! the hinge for the armrest lid had been through-bolted w screws in the past , but i just finished repairing every factory mount for the hinge and filled in the leftover few holes so it looks great again as it should. i havent completely screwed it down as of yet since i will have to get under the car and use an awl to locate those screw holes that are hiding underneath the brand new carpet. the console still has a great luster to it like the rest of the interior parts. GLASS / WEATHERSTRIPPING / TRIM / MISC.... i never did buy new door seals after painting the car - but i never drove it in the rain so i just saved my money - but you will want to buy a new pair and install them. ive already installed a new set of the upper seals that are on top of doors and seal up against the glass that have the thin stainless trim like the originals had on them. New windshield and the rest of glass is all of the original ones that i recently had professionally tinted and they look great ! only a couple of very minor scratches on lower part of back glass next to where the aerosmith decal is at - minor detail but im trying to describe every detail here for you. GRILLE WORK.... this car has its factory vacuum controlled hidden-headlight grill which works as it should and the doors stay in the closed position even after letting the car sit for 1 month ! very tight vacuum system and it all works as it should. the grill has always been in great shape on this car but i just recently restored it all and professionally repaired any cracks and then spent many many hours re-painting it all in the low-gloss black with all of the raised fins being done in charcoal grey - it turned out better than i could have ever wished for. still has the very unique center grill for the 1971 gt cyclones only which has the GT emblem in the center hole - chrome is excellent too ! the complete grill lines up very well and if youre familiar with cyclones....that is a very hard thing to accomplish but it was easy on this car since it has never been in an accident - i didnt have to use any spacers or washers to adjust and properly align the grille-work. also installed nos running light lenses and all hardware replated in a dark grey color so you wouldnt see a bunch of shiny hardware when looking through the grill. BODY / PAINT / CHROME.... i am a very picky person - the paint-job looks great and is constantly getting compliments from everybody but theres some minor flaws that have always bothered me but nobody else seems to notice them until i point them out. this car was sold new in arizona and then migrated to the oklahoma city area which is where it was when i bought it around 1990-91 and then drove her down to dallas. it has always been a very straight ( never wrecked ) and never rusty car to start off with and has been mostly garage kept ever since i painted the car around 91-92. the paint job is getting old but still shows well &shines great and always gets a lot of compliments and draws a whole lot of attention . the paint is not perfect , theres some scratches here and there and a few chips - but it looks way too nice to repaint ((unless if you want a flawless show car)). this color was an option for this car that i added to it since its original color was a darker shade of green , but i removed the doors / hood and trunklid when i painted the car so that i could properly prep and paint all of the jambs - only evidence of the original color is inside of the trunk which never bothered me and i didnt want to rattlecan it with black or speckled paint like ive seen done so many times and end up with it looking tacky , it would look better with a new trunk mat in it but i ran out of money. paint used was the brand name....R&M Diamont 1971 ford code Z grabber green metallic which was a division of glasurit as i recall. the car was also originally born w vinyl top which was removed completely and there was absolutely no rust under it anywhere. HOOD--on the car came off of another cyclone and it was slightly bowed at the drivers side hinge - we straightened it out and used some filler to make it look good....it also has aftermarket hood pins installed - the hood on the car looks good but is not perfect , but i do have an original perfect hood from another 1971 gt that is available to the buyer of my car. --will talk more about that at the end of this ad. DRIVERS DOOR --- has had the door latch striker area rewelded in before i painted the car and it is the only other panel of this car that has some filler in it from a shallow dent - ** i just installed a new lower door hinge that has been painted to match the car and now the door will stay open when you open it up as it should - door opens and closes excellent and solid. i also have some extra doors that came off of another 71 gt that are in mint condition w original paint on them that i was keeping around for spares in case this car ever got hit - i will mention these extra parts at the end section of this ad. the car had no rust back when i sanded it down to bare metal but i did see a few dark colored pitts in the very bottom of the drivers front door corner and a few small pitts behind ea rear tire at very bottom corners of qtr panels which i just primered over and painted over , but here it is 20 years later and now theres a few small rust bubbles ( very small ) that you can see underneath the lower matte black paint but theres no bondo - and theyre so minor that they dont really bother me but i wanted to point out all of the flaws about the paint / body so there will be no surprises at all when you see the car in person and examine every inch of it ! this car has never had hail damage and never any dents on the roof. the primer under the paint-job had some sort of strange reaction with the factory lead-work where the rear roof sides were mated to the quarter panels when the car was built ... so when you look at the paint on both sides where this lead is at - it looks like the paint has some light texture to it underneath the smooth clear-coat ... most people dont even see this when looking at the car until i point it out - but once again, i want you to know everything about this car so that you will be very happy with it when you see it in person ! Chrome and trim work is all very nice and original pieces throughout the entire car. all of the lower body gt trim is in excellent shape with no dents or flat spots and it shines very nice and really looks sharp ! one small ding in center of hood lip moulding - the other mouldings including the trunklid are all ding-free and shiny still. front and rear bumpers are still looking good but have never been rechromed and i think they could use a rechrome one day - but look great just the way they are. years ago i had the stainless trim around the windshield and the sides of roof trim professionally polished and the little curved mouldings rechromed - it all still looks great and fits properly --- actually all of the trim work on this car fits properly and looks great. WHEELS / TIRES / BRAKES AND SUSPENSION.... wheels are vintage ( not repro ) american racing model 200 SP chrome plated wheels also referred to as " daisy mags " by many hot rodders. fronts are 15x7 and rears are 15x8 and all have brand new BF Goodrich radial t/a white letter tires in the sizes of 235/60/15 front and bigger 275/60/15s in the rear. suspension is in great shape with custom global west tubular upper control arms and springs up front w kyb shocks and all other parts are moog that i had rebuilt many years ago but the car probably hasnt ever had but maybe 5-10 k miles put on it since 1991. also has large front swaybar setup w new poly bushings and painted black to look original. converted from power steering over to manual steering years ago and has a recent rebuilt steering box. only thing i was planning on doing to the front-end was to install new strut rod bushings and then have a fresh alignment done as the car has a tendancy to pull just a little to the left.***** maybe i will go ahead and fix that before you come for the car so that if you wanted to drive it across america to your place , it will be a pleasure to drive that far ***** car has factory power disc brakes up front and the car stops very well but i did notice the original disc brake rotors are getting thin and would be ideal to replace them soon. has all new factory exact hard brake lines that i installed during the engine bay restoration. rear suspension is mostly stock - it has lakewood traction bars ( the good ones ) along with coilover type rear shocks and the competition handling package leaf springs from a cobra torino--- the car sits nicely and handles great !!! it is a very comfortable car to drive between the suspension / tires and roomy interior and it handles and rides better than stock and doesnt make any squeaks or rattles when driving - suspension set-up is great ! there's only 1 minor squeaky sound that i havent fixed - is so very minor that i dont even know why im mentioning it , but its the dashpad frame where it meets the windshield area and its annoying to me but that is the ONLY noise that the car makes , thats how tight and nice this car is. MISC...... i have a very short but steep driveway which has never allowed to me to run the dual exhaust out and below the back of the car , so it currently has older and fairly loud flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers w 3" pipes exiting in front of the rear tires w chrome welded on tips. you might choose to change the exhaust system around to your own personal liking and level of sound. i had also purchased a power lower lumbar support kit that i was planning on having installed into the drivers side seat when getting it repaired as i have a bad back but its actually a very comfortable car for me to drive and im 6'2" - not as small as a 70 mustang , not as big as a ltd ---- this is a mid-size unibody mercury which is on the same platform as the ford torino. PAPERS... i have a bix file box full of receipts and paperwork including its original owners manual and receipts dating back to when i bought the car for the 1st time in 90-91 , and most importantly i have kept all of the most recent receipts and paperwork pertaining to all of the new parts and the engine assembly that is currently in the car. FINAL SUMMARY..... excellent car ! it is in such great shape overall and has the best of everything going for it nowdays with the paint / the awesome engine / the 5 speed transmission / period correct mag wheels / and i am very proud to drive this car and show it sometimes too , i have played around with several different cyclones over the years ....but this car is the one that i put all of the best parts into , the most detail work and labor into , and has been the most fun to drive out of all of them ! the car needs so very little done to it now to make it just right - and i dont mind at all finishing up a few things on the car before you take it home as i have plenty of time but i have absolutely run out of money to buy anything else for the car. i have described this car in every detail i could think of , ive been typing up this ad off and on for 2 weeks now - but im sure im leaving out some things - i would love it for you to come down here so i can show you the car in person inside and out but if you want to buy it sight unseen and have it transported , i understand and will let you know of anything else i can think of about this car. EXTRA PARTS--- if youre buying the car in person....i will show you every extra cyclone part that i have and will let some of it go with the car at no extra costs to you .... but theres a lot of extra parts that i spent a lot of money for which this car doesnt need that i would sell at cheap prices to the buyer of the car - either everything , or you can pick and choose. some extras include an extra hood scoop setup , extra 71 gt hood in mint shape w original paint , extra pair of 71 gt doors in mint shape , lots of extra gt cyclone specific body trim , extra 71 gt center grill that im almost done restoring , extra bumpers , extra nice pair of cyclone bucket seats in black , and many many boxes full of other stuff ! i can fill up the trunk of the car with some extras in boxes if youre having it picked up and transported , but the larger items are too big for shipping and must be picked up in person ------------im sure we can work out something if you want some extra time to come down . i am still driving the car here and there since the weather is so nice down here and i will continue to tune on the carburetor until it is just right for the new owner. it always starts right up and runs great , but currently has a small hesitation when starting to give it gas - the motor is not fully broken-in until around 3-5k miles and so far ive only driven it apprx 400 miles since completing but i have been keeping a close eye and re-tightening everything so that parts wont be falling off of it - LOL ! i personally wouldnt fear driving this car long distance , but to be on the total safe side...it might be best trailered or transported to your state. TITLE is clear / current with no issues and is in my name ---- also the 1971 texas license plates are the ones registered to the car and they will go with the car to you. SOLD AS-IS W NO WARRANTY 500.00 deposit to be paid within 48 hours of auctions ending ..........and i would like for the balance of the car to be paid in full within 2 weeks of the auctions ending. deposit by paypal is fine , but the remaining balance of the car is to be paid in full by a bank wire-transaction into my account or to pay cash at my bank BEFORE i will release the car from my care. TIME..... i need the money which is why im offering the car up for sale , but you can take your time ( if needed ) to come and pick it up - i am always here at home and the car is safe inside of the garage - and once it sells , i will no longer drive it . all i ask for is for you to be honest and to communicate with me - i would like to have you as a new friend and to stay in touch with me - im available now and in the future to answer any/all questions / technical support for cyclones as well as a parts source and can tell you where to go or who to use for any parts you should ever need. thanks, steve 972-655-8134 6 or 7 videos of the car are on youtube - my user name there is mrsteve4290 this type of restored/ resto mod / period correct sort of cyclone does not come up for sale often if at all - i havent seen any others like it. youre buying this car from a very picky and experienced cyclone restoration specialist and is priced for a lot less than i have invested into it - please bid w confidence and/or use the buy it now offer for my cyclone if youre ready for her ! *** this is the 1st time this car is being offered for sale ---- dont let it get away if you want a great cyclone ! *** thanks again, steve
