Vehicle Detail
1970 VW Bug 124k Miles Great runner and driver With very little written documentation to verify the history on this bug. Here's what I have gathered: A US serviceman purchased this bug in Italy and brought it back to his home in Iowa in the 80's. Sometime in the 90's it was lightly restored by Golden Beetle of Montana. This appears to have included Paint and Interior work, an engine rebuild with a big bore kit (done at approx 100k miles or 24k miles ago). Spring of 2010, I found the bug in Iowa garaged at a lake home. The 3rd owner, whom I purchased the bug from, had the car for 9 years and seldom drove it. She loved it but life changes forced the sale. I picked it up, trailered it home and began to make it road worthy. This included refreshing the fuel system, carb, brakes and bulbs here and there. After driving it for most of the summer the pushrod tubes were leaky, I pulled the engine, removed the top end and resealed it. At this time I checked end play as well as the rings and cylinders. Everything checked out just fine. I reassembled, did one more oil change and it's been running great with virtually no leaking at all in the 400 miles I've put on it. Imagine that, an aircooled engine that doesn't mark its territory! I am only a hobbyist and not a "professional" mechanic, honestly I don't trust most "professional mechanics", they wouldn't know where to plug in the computer on this bug... This is the first time the bug has rolled out in the snow to my knowledge. It was always a summer driver and I've tried to take pictures of any repairs that have been done. The car isn't show quality and has chips and a couple dings as well as a crack in the windshield. Call it what you will, this bug goes down the road as nice as any I've had. The 1500SP engine produces adequate power and will cruise at 65-70mph just fine down the freeway. I've driven it on 150 mile trips to the lake cabin and it's so pleasant to take out in the country on nice summer days. There aren't many cars left on the road that make their driver and other motorists smile! The bug is listed outside of Ebay and the auction may end at any time leading up to its close.
