Vehicle Detail
1992 MR2 I'm selling my 1992 Toyota MR2, 2.2L, normally aspirated, five-speed manual transmission, in Aquamarine Pearl color, with T-tops. It's a great car that I really love, but I don't drive it enough to justify keeping it. It's in very good mechanical shape (still gets about 29-31 mpg city), in pretty good cosmetic shape, but needs a few small repairs to some interior components to make it 100%. It is a very, very dependable daily driver, and has no issues that would keep you from driving it right away, all the time. It has a number of small upgrades and renewed parts that make it that much more dependable and fun to drive. The car includes a set of summer tires on Enkei 16" wheels, and a good condition set of winter tires on the original MR2 wheels. I have owned this car for several years, and it has been very, very dependable for me. It's a fast, fun-to-drive car, and is cheap to drive and maintain. I have not driven it very much at all, and it's gotten to the point where I have to go out of my way to drive it. That means it's time for it to go. Understand as you read this description that I put a couple thousand miles on this car every year, not very much at all. So several items that have been replaced or upgraded are fairly new. Here are a couple videos: http://youtu.be/vO8JCvwP0Oohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJqd-bRMsro Here's the details: Exterior & suspensionPaint is fairly good overall. There are no significant dents on the car, however there are some small dings here and there. Overall the body is perhaps a 7/10 cosmetically. There are a couple of places that should be painted, including a scrape near one rear wheel, and the cowl over the back window. The frame and underbody are in very good condition, there is no significant rust on the car. There is a patch here or there that should be examined and possibly mitigated, but nothing that bubbles, has holes, or is very serious at all. The car has four-way adjustable struts on all four corners. It also has upgraded polyurethane bushings in several areas. The stock radio antenna has been replaced by a rubber ducky type unit. The original retractable one crapped out. The rubber one needs to be secured a little better in the fender well. I was considering replacing it with a windshield antenna or similar, so I didn't have to worry about it at all. That area needs a little work right now. Engine & transmissionThis is the normally-aspirated (non-turbo) engine. It's the bigger engine, 2.2L, 5S-FE. I went out of my way to get this one, not the turbo, as it's a lot less maintenance -- the oil changes and whatnot are a much bigger deal with a turbo. The car had a thorough tuneup several months ago. The engine runs great. I did a timing chain on it when I first bought the car, so it's had two done in its lifetime, so you shouldn't have to worry about that for a long time. The engine has had a couple of minor oil leaks since I bought the car -- I have addressed the ones around the head and valve cover. At this point, the engine blows a little oil when it's first started after sitting for several days, so I assume there's a bit of ring blowby. I recently had the air conditioning pump on the car repaired. The bolts had broken off in the block, and made a real mess for repair. The new pump is spaced out with some washers and some heavy duty bolts to make sure it stays in place. The new pump makes a bit of a whine, and that's really the only noise the whole engine makes. The pump works great, though, and having the air conditioning back has been great. The air doesn't blow super-cold (it's freon, so recharging it or converting it would be a bit of a task, but you could have it done). The air does work, though, and after a few minutes the car is cool inside. In this small car, the AC is also very handy for defrost. The transmission is in great shape. I had a clutch put in about two years ago, which probably equates to about 5,000 or fewer miles ago. It grabs great, and has no issues at all. I have also installed several short/low shift mods inside the car, which altogether make for a very nice shifting experience. All the transmission bushings and connections were checked during the clutch replacement, and are in good shape. If you're a performance nut, and wondering what type of clutch it has, it's the Toyota part, and here's why. The only time this car has ever, ever, ever left me anywhere is when I had a performance clutch in it, and one of the springs between the clutch stages came loose and jammed the clutch up. No more performance clutches, thank you. The car has a brand new battery, as of October. InteriorProbably the area that needs the most help on this car is the interior. It is in very serviceable shape, but could use some attention to make it the best possible. The dashboard is slightly warped in spots near the windshield, from heat I assume. It came to me that way, and I've never done anything about it. Honestly, I don't notice it most times, but it is noticeable when you first get in the car and look. The driver's side door vinyl has a tear that should be addressed. It's not terrible, but it is unsightly. Some vinyl repair goop from the auto store would fix it, but I have not done it. The driver's seat has some worn areas (both seats are cloth). Also on the interior, the lock actuators/solenoids need some attention. The driver's one in particular does not seem to work, and should be replaced. All the locks lock, but the driver's one does not work reliably with the power lock button. Also, the power lock and power window button array is loose in the door, and needs to be better secured. The shifter boot is a little crummy too. Those are the interior issues. Let's talk about the good points. The interior carpet, vinyl, and cloth is generally in pretty damned good shape for its age (exceptions noted above). I have added the extra little JDM console box on the back wall, which is a nice little storage touch. I have the original T-top shades, which are a huge plus in the summer time. I never take them out during the summer. I also have the original bag meant to hold the T-tops when they're off the roof. Also note (THIS IS HUGE) I had the rubber replaced on both the T-tops and the T-top openings. Thus, the roof does not leak at all. This is a world of difference from how most MR2s are after a couple hundred thousand miles and 20 years. The airbag, steering wheel, gauges, glove box, seat adjustments, shifter, lights, etc. all work great, with no real issues. There is an aftermarket radio, with HD and a CD player, in the dash, which is included with the car. I have the stock radio around somewhere, and will try to dig it up so you can have that too. Additional questions?I'm happy to give you the tour of the car, and field any other questions you might have. Please let me know if I can tell you anything else about it, or if you'd like to come look at it. I will take cash only for it, and I have a clean title in hand in my name, ready to sell the car. Again, there's nothing wrong with the car that would keep you from driving it (a lot) right away. I simply don't use it enough to justify keeping it. Thanks for reading. ** An additional note: Someone drove this car recently, and reminded me that it has a bit of front-end shimmy at high speeds. This is definitely true. This leads me to point out a couple of things: It may need a front-end alignment, or other similar work. At lower speeds, it doesn't come up at all, but above 70 or so, you're going to feel it on some roads. Also, I have replaced all the ball joints with heavier-duty ones, and had the front end aligned, about two years ago. Honestly, this might be the issue, perhaps that alignment was not perfect. Just be aware this is something you might have to deal with. Thanks. *** Another note: Some folks had asked about taking this car home. It drives forever, no problems. I'm confident I could drive it to California tomorrow. Indeed, I drove it about ten hours one day last week. It'll get you home.
