Vehicle Detail
I need to sell my Spyder to free up some garage space for another project. This is an original, extremely complete and highly optioned 1964 Corvair Spyder Coupe in the highly desirable black on black color scheme (original colors). This is a well-maintained, always cared for, solid and straight excellent driver car. Extremely complete with 99+% original parts present, even including the rock deflector plates in front of the rear grill, winter heat cover plates, all the turbo packing retainers, the original jack with jack handle and jack holder spring, etc. An original Georgia car with time in South Carolina before I bought it about 15 years ago. I have always garaged it and it was often up on a four-post hydraulic lift in my garage with my 1965 Corsa (daily driver) parked underneath. My research indicates that I am only the third owner of this 1964 Spyder since new. It has been loved and cared for and appreciated by all three owners who were all Corvair enthusiasts. As part of my ‘gentle’ restoration about 10 years ago, I found that the floor pans were in excellent general shape with just a few small rust holes. These small areas were cut out, cleaned, primed, and then covered with three layers of fiberglass cloth and resin. They turned out great and stronger than the original metal. The entire underside of the floor pan was stripped, primed and sprayed with high quality black undercoating (red color in pic of underneath surface of floor pan is only reflection of the red 4 post lift – the pan is solid and jet black semi-gloss in color). Wheel wells were in excellent shape, cleaned, and sprayed with the same high quality black undercoating. Some surface rust on suspension pieces only, cross member solid !. They look great and really show nicely around the wheels/tires. The engine had been gone through by the previous owner and compression was very good all the way around so the block and heads were not touched by me. The engine compartment was stripped down to the just the block and heads remaining and every piece of engine sheet metal, cleaned and repainted as were all the other components. Both the turbo carb and the turbo were professionally rebuilt by a senior member of the Heart of Georgia Corvair Club who is a fixture in CORSA and the owner of multiple, national convention winning cars and a Greenbrier. I took out the gas tank, which had some rust, and replaced it with a new exact replacement tank from one of the vendors and a rebuilt fuel gauge sender without the sock. Instead of the internal sock, I installed an easily accessible, in-line gas filter with the glass see-through housing and replaceable filter element. Have a set of Viton O seals that I will include - haven't had time to install them. Car idles great, shifts smooth and develops boost! The entire trunk was stripped to bare metal, primed, and repainted with the correct color and texture splatter paint. I went through the entire brake system and replaced the flexible hoses and all other parts as needed to provide a reliable system. Most of the wiring harnesses were retaped. The car was repainted by the previous owner in original lacquer. Paint currently a 20 footer with some expected small parking lot dings, etc. I replaced nearly all of the rubber weather stripping with factory correct replacements from the major vendors. Also put in new Clarke’s carpet, shift boot, larger sized shift ball, and rear package tray cardboard. The original upholstery, headliner and visors are in amazingly condition, reaffirming that this Spyder had an easy and unabused life. The pitures make the interior look a bit gray but it is really dark black with much less than expected wear. Rear seat folds down and locks tight in both positions. Radial w/w tires with plenty of tread - less than 5000 miles on the matched set. The period correct Hercules bias ply spare tire holds air and shows very well in the engine bay. All windows function well as do door handles and all locks. ORIGINAL keys go with the car. The car has NUMEROUS RARE OPTIONS including rear speaker with rectangular metal grill (yes – this was an option in 1964 - see pic) and the original front/rear fader switch on the AM radio (radio doesn’t work now), rear antennae, front deluxe seat belts, spare tire lock, wire wheel covers, bumper guards, tinted windshield, and correct wire wheel covers. This is a heavily optioned timeless classic and reflects the desire of the original purchaser owner to have the best of the best in 1964! More recently, I replaced various suspension bushings as needed and had installed a brand new bolted flywheel, clutch, throw-out bearing, and fork and shifter coupling. The Spyder was up on the four post lift in my garage all this summer and when I took it down, connected the battery, primed the oiling system and carb, it fired right up and came to a smooth idle in a few seconds, zero smoking. Always been reliable !! I have listed the mileage at 80,000 (odometer shows 70,900) because I do not known exact mileage. Odometer not currently working but my best honest guess is that this car has about 80,000 original miles on it - it is much too nice to have turned over and was driven little by the last two owners. This car is a real time capsule and a favorite at all of the car shows I have taken it to over the many years. Won multiple trophies. Gets thumbs up from people every time I take it out. This particular Spyder also comes with great provenance: First - it took part in the 2006 Hot Rod Power Tour (great father/son trip !!). On day five of the Power Tour, in Roanoke, Virginia, my Spyder was one of about 20 featured cars (out of THOUSANDS of cars !!) and the pictures were placed on the Hot Rod Power Tour Website where you can see them today. Please see: http://www.hotrod.com/2006powertour/2006_hot_rod_power_tour_day_5_pictures/photo_17.html http://www.hotrod.com/2006powertour/2006_hot_rod_power_tour_day_5_pictures/photo_18.html http://www.hotrod.com/2006powertour/2006_hot_rod_power_tour_day_5_pictures/photo_16.html http://www.hotrod.com/2006powertour/2006_hot_rod_power_tour_day_5_pictures/photo_15.html Car performed great over several legs of the Power Tour (not entire Tour) and got over 26 miles per gallon at highway speed!! I have kept the Hot Rod Power Tour numbered participant sticker on the front windshield as a badge of honor for this prototypical hot rod. Second, I have pictures of the infamous RALPH NADER standing next to THIS CAR. The pictures are a hoot and also draw huge numbers of laughs and questions from people at car shows. A great car to enjoy just as it is. Or take it to the level of a national senior car. A great example of a rare, heavily optioned, original, cared for, never in snow/ice/salt, reliable classic that can only get rarer, more desirable, and more expensive with time. My need for space is your opportunity to have a great car!! Lots of pictures provided. I will do my best to answer all questions. Also, may be wanting to sell my 1965 Corsa 140 (not as nice as the Spyder) (separately). Also I have a WORKING Corvair/Chevelle 1966 AM/FM with MULTIPLEX unit with the original wiring harness for sale (separately).
