Vehicle Detail

1998 Ford E-350 Club Wagon 7.3L PowerStroke Diesel. Thanks for looking! You know, I thought about washing and detailing this van, but really, it’s a work van. It’ll never be pretty again, not that it ever was to begin with. Affectionately known as “Frankenvan” and by my teenage daughter’s friends as “The Industrial Van” it’s simply a workhorse and excellent tow vehicle (the first photo below is from a couple months ago when I brought home a new toy to play with!). A close friend purchased this new at Bartow Ford and his four boys did their worst to it over the next ten years, although he maintained it regularly (we’re both auto enthusiasts) it suffered cosmetically. Then he pretty much signed it over to a guy that worked for him and that was the worst year of this poor vehicle’s life. So that guy left and basically abandoned the van at my friend’s place and I took it off his hands at that point a couple years ago. After sitting around my shop for a while I finally set about getting it as right as I could and up until recently (more on that) it turned out to be a great vehicle. It has the 3.55 ratio rear and managed 18MPG with highway driving. I’ve used Opti-Lube additive, Mobil-1 synthetic ATF in the E4OD transmission, Mobil-1 synthetic gear lube in the differential and Rotella 15W40 in the engine. At over 250,000 miles the thing I’m most impressed with about this 7.3L is there’s no oil consumption nor any significant leakage, just a little weep from rear seal as evidenced on front of transmission. It will not mark your driveway! Here’s what’s been serviced or replaced in the last 18 months: New tires (B.F. Goodrich Commercial T/A, Load Range “E”), new all-aluminum radiator (much better cooling and repairable!), new blower motor, new CPS, better front seats (identical to original) from salvage yard (originals included), new windshield, new Rain-X wipers (couple months ago), two Wal-Mart heavy duty batteries (yellow top), new A/C compressor clutch. The white roof is a Rustoleum rattle-can job in attempt to make the van cooler in the Florida sun, but I did prep properly (wax removal, D/A, mineral spirits, prime, paint) so a little wet sanding and topcoat then you’ll have it shiny! I also ordered and installed a “custom” tint kit from here on eBay, 20% on front doors and 5% the rest. Either I’ve gotten really bad at tint or it was junk tint, but there’s lots of wrinkles and dust in it. It does help significantly with the heat though! I cleaned the driver side tint off as it was the worst and the tint seller sent me a new piece for that window which I haven’t installed, so you can try your hand and hopefully do better than me! The rear two seats I never got with the van but the brackets come with it if you choose to add them at some point. The interior plastic for the rear and side door well are included and in fair shape, I just removed as I was considering putting in cargo control. Both the front and rear A/C blow cold and the heat works very well too. Everything up front blows through the defroster and the rear air plenum door is held by wire as there is damaged vacuum lines under the dash. I can show you where it is and once you replace about a foot or two total you’ll have full and normal vent control of both front and rear air. The input bearing on the differential is worn, you’ll hear it especially when towing, and consequently seeps a little. Fortunately good used axles are plentiful although you have to hunt a bit for a 3.55 ratio. All lights exterior and interior work, I pulled bulbs for the middle lights as I leave doors open a lot when working out of van on aircraft. The most annoying thing is the handles for the side and rear doors. The ends of the actuator cables are plastic and deteriorate allowing them to slip out of the latch mechanism. I rigged some line to open the doors but have since discovered someone who makes machined aluminum fittings to fix the problem, apparently it’s that common. I’ll share that info with the winning bidder or if you have an E-series van with this problem just message me and I’ll get it to you. This van's been in central Florida its entire life so no rust or rot other than surface rust, the most significant of which is on the floor behind the front seats where moisture would get trapped under the rubber floor matting.  Some wire brushing followed by rust converter was my plan.  The rear right door leaks a bit from the dent in the top and also I think the gaskter around the third brake light may leak some, enough to leave water on the floor in patches by rear doors.  Thought I might try some silicone around the brake light and fabricating an overhanging lip for the doors to bring the drip-edge out some.  Simple stuff I can sketch out if interested.  The big gash on the passenger side? I got a little to close to a 1929 Allis-Chalmers E 20-35 tractor on steel wheels at a local tractor show. Tractor didn’t get a scratch, the van however… There’s more stories if you want ‘em! NOW FOR THE BIG NEWS: Last time I drove the van I noticed a rough idle on the way home. So threw the scanner on it and got a cylinder contribution code. More diagnostics (videos below), research and consultation leads me to believe the #2 injector is likely scored and thus delivers no fuel, so needs to be replaced. This is the only PowerStroke in the stable and I have neither the tools, time nor inclination to replace the injector. All my other diesels are IDI and that’s what I work on, plus I finally got the step-van I really wanted for work and simply no longer need the E-350. If you don’t know anything about PowerStrokes and the 7.3L please do not bid on this auction. There’s still a lot of life left in this rig but it needs TLC and that means someone who knows Ford diesels. NOTE: The brake controller and hitch receiver pictured ARE NOT INCLUDED in auction, but for $250 additional I will leave them on. Van is factory wired for towing and has oversize transmission cooler as part of tow package. I have tried to cover everything and will surely left things out inadvertently so please, PLEASE be sure to ask any questions you may have regarding this vehicle or the auction. I will work with the winning bidder within reason on storage until pickup and can deliver within central Florida area for a fee. Van runs but on seven cylinders and I will not run a diesel with an inoperative injector as it provides some lubrication for the piston. There is various schools of thought on this but I personally will not do it nor be responsible for the results of doing it. That being said, once you pay for the vehicle and transfer title it’s yours to do with as you please. Good luck and happy bidding! This is a NO RESERVE auction and vehicle is subject to prior sale, seller reserves right to end auction at any time, although will run to conclusion if not closed prior to final 24 hours.
