The Galen Govier report on this unfinished project indicates that just 345 GTS convertibles were built for 1969 and only 34 had factory air conditioning. Additionally, only 28 GTS convertibles had disc brakes and just 34 had an AM/FM radio. This car was built November 5, 1968 and 15 days later, the original buyer took delivery in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. It's had just two owners since then, with a detailed provenance that can be traced back to day one. After the death of this relative the project stalled. Following a move to another city, life events took precedence over completion of the car he had purchased nearly twenty years prior. All trim is removed and is in the trunk. We took pictures so a new buyer can evaluate what can be reused and what needs replacement. The parts include all exterior and interior trim, badges, bright work two sets of hubcaps and a brand new convertible boot. (parts pictures at the bottom of the presentation) The legendary status of Chrysler's most potent small block was no accident. Any Dodge or Plymouth with a 340 was, and remains still, a respected high performance package that can put the hurt on many a big block. As the muscle car wars neared crescendo in 1969, the 340 was intentionally underrated at 275 horsepower, perhaps to appease insurance companies and make supercar ownership easier for the intended audience. Most automotive journalist of the time correctly suspected the 340's gross horsepower was something well north of 300. With an advertised torque of 340 ft-lbs at 3,200 RPM, Dodge's popular A-body compact was more than just a little fast. The reliability and long life of Chrysler engines are also legendary and this Dart GTS convertible not only starts every time, it is wholly in possession of all the screaming performance it had when new. Both bumpers have been re-chromed and are like brand new. This GTS came well optioned with air conditioning, am/fm radio and even a headlight-on reminder. 340/4-barrel 275 horsepower @ 5,000/340 lb-ft torque @ 3,200 RPM Under the hood (and also the undercarriage) really shows the underlying quality and why this ultra rare Dodge is such a worthy project. Lots of good metal to be found. Undercarriage is all there and this GTS had the optional front disc brakes.
