Vehicle Detail

Up for auction is a 2002 Subaru Outback Wagon, 2.5L 4-cylinder w/5sp manual transmission. This vehicle has a lot of life left in it, with a rebuilt engine, new clutch and many other new parts installed about 15K miles ago. We are the original owners of this vehicle, we purchased it exactly 10 years ago this month and have performed all of the scheduled maintenance. Unfortunately, in Sept. of last year we experienced the head gasket problem common to '00-'04 2.5L engines and it ruined the original engine before we knew what happened. I found a place online that specializes in rebuilding imported Japanese Subaru engines with an upgraded head gasket (see picture of receipt) for a reasonable amount of money, about $1800. To comply with the warranty on the rebuilt engine you are required to replace a long list of parts that may have led to the demise of your first engine, such as the radiator, water pump, thermostat, temp. sensor, timing belt, etc. (see picture of Repair & Towing receipt). I had a reliable local garage do the entire job in October of last year at 95,104 original miles on the odometer. This saved me from having to buy a new car for work, which turned out to be a great decision. We have since bought a new family vehicle for our growing family, our 3 kids were running out of room in the back seat so we no longer need the Subaru. The Good: * Only 15,000 miles on the rebuilt engine and clutch. This vehicle should last MANY more years and miles. * AWD vehicle with manual transmission handles beautifully in the snow. I've put it through many trials of winter driving and it hasn't let me down yet. I have NEVER gotten stuck in snow of any depth! * It has the Cold weather package, this includes seat heaters (w/2 settings), heated side mirrors, and heating coils at the bottom of the windshield where the wipers rest (keeps the ice off the wipers). * Runs very well and generally gets 23mpg city and 26mpg highway. Fulltime AWD affects the mileage. * Engine has excellent power & acceleration due to the porsche boxster designed engine w/5sp manual. * Creature comforts: ICE COLD AC, self-dimming mirror, power driver's seat, AM/FM cassette & CD player * Overall clean interior with a couple of blemishes, such as rear passenger door inside panel & cracking on passenger side dash board (see pictures). * No major rust on the body anywhere, only superficial rust in a couple spots where paint is chipped. The Bad: * The front brake rotors may need to be replaced in the next 6 months, they are starting to pulse a little when braking heavily, like coming down a steep hill. Fortunately, the rotors are cheap and are very easily replaced, I did that job myself a few years ago and it was a piece of cake. * Although the engine is rebuilt, it is leaking a little oil from somewhere around the driver's side front corner of the engine. It could be from the valve cover or from a seal, like the cam shaft or crank shaft. The mechanic said it could be as much as $500 to repair, or you could just put a quart of oil in every 1,000 miles as I have for the 11 months and save some money. For the cost of the repair you could drive 100K miles adding oil every 1K and still break even. It hasn't bothered me at all; the only downside being oil spots on the driveway or garage floor, and the slight smell of burning oil very occasionally from the oil on the hot manifold (I only smell it when I come to a stop after a long drive). * The tailgate latch/handle is a little stiff and sticks, it may need to be removed and lubricated, but it still works. This also should be an easy fix. The Ugly (literally): * This vehicle is cosmetically challenged. In addition to the several scuffs on plastic body paneling and the dent and scratch on the passenger side rear door (see pictures), there are more than 50 slight circular dents from a hail storm the car was caught in a few months ago with marble to cherry sized hail. The dents are not visible in the picture due to the rain, but I can try to get some pictures if it ever stops raining (courtesy of tropical storm Lee). This vehicle has been great for us (aside from the head gasket problem last year) and we will be sad to see it go. It will be a great car for anyone that doesn't mind the cosmetic blemishes. If you need safe, reliable transportation in the winter, there is no better car than an AWD Subaru, especially with the cold weather package for comfort as well! Please feel free to contact me with any questions, I will answer them as soon as I can. This vehicle is being sold AS IS in a private sale with no warranty. I have provided all of the known mechanical issues with this vehicle and have been very honest in doing so. The winner of this auction will be required to place a $150 non-refundable deposit through PayPal within 48 hours. I will only accept PayPal or cash for the vehicle, no checks please.
