Your humble scribe thought he did, until I eased the clutch out on this reptile. 700+ horsepower at full whack will fundamentally alter most people's perception of what "fast" is and any discussion about this showroom fresh (2,606 miles) 2007 Shelby Super Snake must begin and end with its breathtaking performance. The brick wall of torque arrives with the subtlety of an earthquake and makes the absence of any Mustang identification completely appropriate. This poisonous predator has as much in common with Ford's popular pony as the moon does with Tabasco sauce. It is in fact a world class, dragon slaying ultra-high performance sports car. As built, with the right upgrades, this Super Snake can mix it up with anything available anywhere on the planet. This Super Snake is in mint condition and it bears repeating; this car is fast. With only 2,606 miles, your new Super Snake is just that; new. It looks new, it feels new, it drives like new and it even smells new. The Ebony paint is near perfect, the body is flawless and the interior is perfect. Even the pricey carbon-fiber front splitter is like new, all pretty and waiting for you to drag it over a curb. What we have here is an all-American supercar. Peak torque of 543 lb-ft happens at around 5,000 RPM and it's never below 500 from 3,000 RPM to redline. The result is a hair-trigger bolt of lightening if a house fly so much as lands on the accelerator. For the uninitiated, the instantaneous throttle response is a sobering experience. There is no casual standing on the gas while nursing a Slurpee with this car and it will only take one injudicious stepping on that dangerous pedal to remind you that some things in life once done, cannot be undone. We're talking a category 5 hurricane wallop of paradigm shifting ground based acceleration. The kind of forward thrust more akin to something with four turbo-fans hanging from wings except few jets can approach 200 MPH with such alarming violence or efficient haste. This Super Snake's potential for carnage and mayhem is so real, one wonders if some kind of minimum qualifications should exist for its purchase. The Super Snake is not a one trick pony, however. The heroic leaping of tall buildings requires equally brave stopping and turning and this is where the masters at Shelby Automobiles in Las Vegas show their breeding. As impressive as the "base" Shelby's Brembos were, an extreme car rightly deserves extreme arresting power. In this case, 6-piston Baer Extreme front and rear brakes with massive 14-inch slotted/drilled rotors. The look through (also massive) Alcoa rims is high art but show-stopping appearance is secondary to the right-now whoa these pricey pieces are capable of and they include ducting (front and rear) to cool (beautiful) rotors. This Shelby Super Snake is a new car from from any perspective. The magicians at Shelby Automobiles have transformed this GT500 into a global threat with handling the equal of anything pedigreed from Europe. On the track, all who approach will struggle to keep up and it's not just because of the Shelby's cheek-flattening acceleration. Shelby/Eibach coil-overs with wrist-sized sway bars and poly bushings everywhere deliver neck-snapping cornering while also providing an everyday ride that will keep the Mrs. quite. It is owned by a long time aficionado of speed we have dealt with before with other wicked-fast vehicles. Purchased from Lithia Ford/Lincoln/Mercury in Boise with stripe delete as per Shelby (the original LeMans stripes make it harder to lay down the Super Snake's matte black stripes) CSM 07SS0044 went though the lengthy conversion process to the 725 horsepower specs. This package includes a few things the 600hp version does not, like a custom, one-piece aluminum driveshaft, the Super Snake Cooling Package and of course, the bigger supercharger. As you can see (above) the list of upgrades is a long one and quite expensive . . . As you probably know, the Super Snake was created, designed and installed by the most respected aftermarket builder in America. This rare collection of high performance parts are engineered to work as a seamless whole with assembly line fit and finish and the clear imprint of craftsmanship evident everywhere you look. It's a Shelby. That's why. 2007 Shelbys are rare (5,632 in 2007?) but with just 1,250 produced, the Super Snake is one of the most valuable factory supported supercars available today and is destined to become the most collectable Mustang ever produced. When a Super Snake rolls into the pits, everybody knows what it is and what it can do. There are no mediocre Super Snakes. They're all scary fast. Some of the upgrades seen here are the silver perforated leather seat inserts, the stitched console and the billet aluminum seat controls. It still smells new in here and everything is new car perfect. Here's a good shot of the stitched logos and the tag indicating side airbags. It looks like new over here too and some of the upgrades you can't see are the billet coat hooks, shoulder belt trim plates and reading lamp trim above the rear view mirror. Another important extra is the Kicker sound system to go with the Shaker 500 6-disc in-dash changer. You'll never forget you're driving something special while in this comfy cabin. 5.4 Liter DOHC Supercharged V8 Over 700 horsepower and a whole lotta shiny stuff. Some upgrades visible here are the polished supercharger, coolant tank, heat exchanger tank and power steering reservoir. "Mammoth" rear supercharger inlet with dual 75mm throttle body. Fuse/control box cover, SVT cam cover art and assorted other billet beauty. All attachment screws under the hood are stainless/billet and there are aluminum covers for the shock tower and hood bolts. The Super Snake aluminum radiator with work order number, date and builder's initials . . . . . . and some more signatures from the guys who hand built the engine. 6-Piston Baer Extreme brakes with massive 14-inch rotors front and rear. (6-piston rear is an upgrade) The brake system includes cooling ducts, front and rear. The Super Snake 725hp version calls for this beautiful 3.5 inch one-piece aluminum driveshaft. 20-inch forged aluminum wheels (left) and JBA exhaust tips.
