I did exchange a couple of nice e-mails with Saleen/Speedlab specialist Tony Fodera who confirmed authenticity and the upgrades this car received from Saleen. It left Saleen's Irvine facility a faster, better handling car but there was more thrust and cornering prowess on the way. A top drawer Vortech V-2 system installation with all the upgrades and a track worthy collection of suspension mods gives this force fed Saleen explosive acceleration and neck-straining handling. Saleen handling magic happens courtesy a gutted stock suspension to make room for Racecraft progressive rate springs with N2 struts and shocks, complete with bushings. Fatter sway bars were installed and the whole works came together with a special "high performance wheel alignment" followed by Saleen-optional polished chrome 18 x 9 wheels, upgraded to 18 x 10 at the rear. It's important to remember that the Saleen suspension package is just that: a package, not merely a collection of pricey parts. However expensive it was, this proven combination has been tried, tested and tweaked over and over again by people with lots of track time (along with more than a few wins) and lengthy engineering credentials. The thrilling result is a Mustang with ferocious initial turn-in, Ferrari-esque lateral grip and zero lean with a driveway-friendly ride height and a wife-friendly ride. We wanted to see if this blown 'Stang had the beans to hang with something we know is putting out around 350 advertised horsepower. To wit; a one-owner 2000 Chevrolet Corvette FRC we just happen to have in our showroom with its 45,000 original miles and 6-speed manual transmission. I was driving the Mustang and with each car in third gear (me at about 3,000 RPM) we both nailed it. My boss (driving the 'Vette) then had the exquisite pleasure of seeing a triple-black Saleen pull handily away, showing him tail lights from a couple of car lengths ahead before 100 MPH arrived. Conclusion: the heavier Saleen walks the 'Vette (fixed roof coupe is the lightest Corvette) with its larger 5.7 liter LS1. What fun, putting an LS1 Corvette in its place. With only 43,507 original miles and a sinister stance, this model year 2000 GT has to be one of the lowest mileage Saleens currently available. Everywhere you look, it has the appearance and quality befitting an odometer display this low. In fact, in real life actually standing next to this rare vehicle, it has the look and feel of a new car. It's that nice. The original paint is awesome, it does not have a single dent or ding and the interior is practically showroom new. The g-Force 295/35ZR rear rubber will probably cause further discomfort among the wannabes. Only true thoroughbreds need apply. Again with the stance and the staggered width wheels and the body kit and the smooth metal and the perfect trim and damn; this thing is black. It's fast as hell too and, by the way, unless you know what you are doing it might be best to leave the traction control on. This girl has a short fuse and is packin' heat. I thought throttle response was especially crisp when I first drove this car so it was no surprise to find the 70mm BBK throttle body among the under-hood goodies. After finding the Richmond Gear shipping box in the trunk however (see below) I now understand why this Mustang steps off with such authority. Saleen replaced the original 3.27 differential with their own 3.55 unit. Not long after, this 3.73 ring and pinion was installed and perfect does not even begin to describe how well this gearing works with the Tremec's 3.37 1st and 1.99 2nd gears - ideal for this high-revving, supercharged engine. The Saleen 3.55 ring and pinion comes with the car, packed nicely in the Richmond box. This GT was already loaded before it went to Saleen but the white faced gauges, 200 MPH speedometer and two-gauge center dash pod are the first things you notice upon opening the door. A couple of other things that might catch your eye are the billet HVAC knobs and 43,000 original miles on the digital odometer. (maybe you noticed the LED shift light, Mach 460 stereo and CD player too) The upholstery, carpet and Sport leather seats are in near mint condition. You also get a power driver's seat, tilt steering and Saleen seatbelt shoulder pads. This 4.6 liter SOHC engine is clean, dry and beautiful. It is also supercharged, intercooled and wicked fast, courtesy Vortech and a particularly skilled installer. The engine oil fed, V-2 centrifugal supercharger system is complete with a Maxflow Powercooler and front mounted heat exchanger. On the right you can see the reservoir for adding water and/or ice. The reservoir installation necessitated Vortech's relocation kit that puts the battery in the trunk in a nice aluminum box. New injectors, a heavy duty water pump and the prettiest plumbing you've ever seen gives this powerful package its reliability and factory under-hood appearance. And, powerful it is . . . estimated horsepower: 360 @ 5,000 - 5,300 RPM estimated torque: 370 @ 4,000 - 4,300 RPM The ultra low mileage works out to less than 3,500 miles a year or not quite ten miles a day. Low enough for ya? Thought so. Here's the Vortech battery box in the trunk with handy battery tender attached. In this clean undercarriage shot, the heat exchanger for the supercharger can be seen just behind the splitter with the custom intake/MAF in the stock location ahead of the right/front wheel. The beefy sway bar, N2 struts and Racecraft springs are hard to miss, too. It's clean back here too. Clean enough to see Racecraft springs and shocks, larger rear sway bar, Bassani exhaust, fully boxed lower control arms and even sub-frame connectors . . . . . . welded sub-frame connectors and as you can see below, even the upper control arms are boxed. (right) Here's why the brakes on this Saleen can suck off your sunglasses, sending them crashing into the defroster vents. Baer Claws with 13-inch slotted/cross drilled 2-piece rotors. A better look at the front pads. The rear rotors are slotted/cross-drilled too and have thick, new Duralast pads. I can't say enough about the brakes on this Saleen; the car just squats with no fade, no drama. I might hesitate to install an exotic set-up like this on my own car because of its exorbitant price. I must admit however, the confidence they inspire when driving at or near the limit is something I simply do not feel in a stock Mustang GT. Racecraft progressive rate front (left) and rear springs.
