Vehicle Detail
For sale is a 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie 4-door sedan. It has a 292ci V8, 2-speed aluminum case Fordomatic auto transmission, 3.10 rear axle, manual steering, manual brakes. I believe myself to be the second titled owner of this car. When I bought it, it had been sitting under a tarp on the edge of a property for many years. I have done quite a lot of work on it to get it up and running well. I have not done much for it cosmetically though, and there is still much work left to be done. It is currently registered and I have used it as a daily driver on many occasions, though it is primarily a second car. Overview of Work Performed: -Installed rebuilt 292 V8 engine. Block is correct casting for '59 but the heads are '56 truck heads. Carburetor is the original unit (serial number matches 59 Ford shop manual). The carburetor has been rebuilt and adjusted. The distributor has been calibrated for this specific application. All adjustments pertaining to ignition, fuel delivery, and control inputs have been made. Single exhaust with glass pack muffler, not loud but very nice tone. Engine runs strong, very reliable, minimal blow-by, delivers about 14 mpg average. -Serviced automatic transmission. Some seals have been replaced, bands adjusted, damaged park pawl repaired, filter replaced and fluid changed. Shifts smoothly and reliably. -Overhauled brake system. All flexible lines replaced, all wheel cylinders replaced, shoes replaced, drums turned, some hard lines replaced, new master cylinder. Brakes are not self-adjusting. Brake performance and feel is excellent given its design limitations. -Driveline serviced: new non-serviceable ujoints installed on driveshaft, new pinion oil seal on differential, changed differential fluid. -Instrumentation and controls: All gauges have been calibrated, lights work, clock works, radio works intermittently (needs antenna). Heater controls adjusted and work great. Underdash wiring in excellent condition, quite remarkable. Vacuum wiper motor professionally rebuilt, works perfectly and does great in rain. -4 new tires since I bought it. I don't think they have more than 6k miles on them. Little wear. -I started to paint the car and removed some of the trim for this purpose. I HAVE ALL TRIM and since most of it is stainless rather than chrome it is mostly in excellent shape. There is pitting in the chrome pieces. MAJOR THINGS NEEDED -The bumpers need to be straightened and replated. In general, the non-stainless trim on the car needs refurbishing. -The interior is all original and though not abused it will need full reupholstering. The headliner is in excellent shape though. -Paint! Except for the roof and the 3 wheels I painted red before it got too cold to paint, all the paint is ancient and not pretty. -Body: There are no dents to speak of, but there is some rust damage. It's pretty much all at and behind the rear wheels, and most of it is hidden by the rear quarter panel trim. The floor pans are totally solid. In general, the body has survived very well considering it does not appear to have been a pampered car. The passenger door skin has bondo all over it because the paint had been chipping off where the tarp had held moisture against the door. -Suspension: the front suspension needs to be rebuilt. The upper control arm bushings are shot on the driver side, which results in some squeaking. Bottom line is, this is a car in the middle of a drive-while-you-restore project. I have driven fully restored cars that were not as refined in operation as this car. That's not to say it's perfect, but that it's very easy to get along with and enjoy even as is. If it were painted it would be breathtaking. But I have decided that my time with it has come to an end. Questions are welcome and encouraged. I will not ship the vehicle, so please make arrangements to pick it up. I recently took it on a 200-mile trip with no trouble whatsoever and would consider it capable of a long trip, but would not recommend cruising at speeds above 70mph for extended periods of time simply because the engine's doing about 2800 rpm at 70. The car is for sale as-is where-is. There is no warranty.
