Vehicle Detail
here is a reverse trike called a freeway. it is a 1981 year model. there vehicles were made from 1979 to 1982 and about 700 were produced. originally most of these were equipped with either a 12 or 16 hp tecumseh engine and they were quite adequate. this one has had an engine swap consisting of a honda 750 cc motorcycle engine. the engine has double overhead cams and 4 carbs. it has 77 hp and runs strong as you can see in the utube video. it has a 5 sp. gearbox controlled by a ratchet shifter on the right side and works flawlessly. there are several advantages to this engine swap. obviously more power if you need it. a smoother and more reliable clutch, bullet proof so far. the original clutches were the golfcart type using a belt and chain arrangement and not all that sweet. the 5sp gearbox is handy and can be used as a brake just as with any manual gearbox, something the original setup couldn't do. this freeway may be the only one in existance that has a hood. this comes in handy if needing to work in that area and makes the battery very accessable. i just painted this freeway and did a little upholstery. i have owned this freeway for about 8 yrs and in that time put about 2500 miles on it. while in the shop i went over it pretty well. the brakes were a little weak and found the front wheel cylinders were sticking. i replaced both front wheel cylinders, one wheel brg, repacked the others. the shoes were replaced when i originally bought it and still in excellent condition. i had to replace the horn, which has never worked. it works off the original turn signal switch by pulling up on the lever. the factory original tires still looked good but i replaced all three with brand new ones just to be safe, the original being 30 yrs old. i've driven this to work on occasion, 22 miles one way with no problems. although this thing will run plenty fast, i have never had it over 65 mph and usually drive it around 45 to 50. it will probably do more than that in 3rd. gear, no doubt. i replaced the windshield about a yr ago with lexan off of ebay. i have never ran side glass, i like it open with more space and ventilation. i purchased a handling kit from tom sloger yrs back and that improved the handling considerably. i had a stock freeway with the 12 hp engine with the handling kit and both handle very well. i could not tell any difference between the two vehicles. the freeway is titled as a motorcycle in florida and most states. the engine is easily accessible thru the top cover and two side covers.all the gauges work but i've never hooked up the radio, which is original. it has the original gas tank under the seat. david brower supplied the original style decals on this jewel. see the utube video to see it in action.
