1973 Triumph GT6 Rare MK3 GT6 - One of 4,217 Total Cars Produced in 1973 Exceptionally Well Maintained with Records / Documentation Repainted, New Interior & Period Style Upgrades! _______________________________________________ Triumph GT6 - History A striking fastback coupe with styling by Michelotti, the GT6, introduced in 1966, with E-type lines, was derived from the Spitfire. The GT 6 was powered by a tuned version of the smooth and robust 2-litre straight six cylinder engine and twin Stromberg's, already shared by the Triumph Vitesse and Triumph 2000 saloon. With 104bhp at 5,300rpm, performance was more brisk than the Vitesse, 60 mph coming up in 10.1 seconds. With just 13,042 Mk III examples made, it is quite a rare car to find today, Triumph's pocket sized Gran Turismo having very attractive looks, and making for a very practical classic in terms of size (12' 5" in length) to store and use. Similar to the Triumph Spitfire, it inherited what was essentially a Triumph Herald chassis and running gear, though the latter's rear axle arrangement would be updated for the Mk II, lower wishbones replacing the Mk I's swing axles. The last of the line, the Mk III adopted a simpler 'swing spring' arrangement and borrowed a similar look to its' bigger brother, the Triumph Stag, at the rear. Of particular interest in the past several years are all varieties of the Triumph cars. The GT 6 has become increasingly difficult to locate, especially in well maintained, rust free, "California condition." This car is an original California car that has remained in California for its entire life with the exception of a few years when it followed its owner to another state a result of his job relocation. Of course, the car was kept in the garage and only used as a fair weather, weekend car. It remains in "California condition", free from any rust on the body or undercarriage. When it comes to "survivors", it would be difficult to find a better example of an enthusiast owned, well cared for California GT 6. The Triumph GT6 was produced in very limited numbers. As an example, in 1973, only 4,217 vehicles were produced including imports & exported GT6's. Needless to say, this represents an extremely low production run and means that only a few thousand cars made their way to U.S. shores before the end of the manufacture of the GT6 in 1974. Of the few GT6's that we have owned over the years, this is by far the best of the group. Many collector / enthusiasts are attracted to the 1973 GT 6 based on the improved rear suspension and driveline arrangement. The changes resulted in improved ride quality and better overall handling characteristics. What separates this GT6 from others? We ask that you consider the following: ? Rust free California car (even the underside / chassis) ? Recent ownership for 14+ years by one owner / British car collector & enthusiast ? Factory Owner's Manual - GT6 MkIII ? "Cost no Object" repair / maintenance records for 15~ years ? Very straight body with very good panel fit for a 70's era British sports car ? Complete re-paint (Original '73 GT6 color) with drive-line & trim removed (including front from rails, underside of hood, door jambs and inner door panels ? Rubber moldings and other trim replaced at time of re-spray ? Clean ? Excellent interior including newer front seat covers, beautiful door panels, dash pad, carpet and other interior trim ? Lovely original wood dash ? Very tidy virtually original engine bay (with the exception of added air cleaners / electronic ignition) ? Includes Jack, Tools & matching wheel /tire Period style & appropriate "enthusiast upgrades" add to the character of the GT6 and include: ? UK 8-spoke "Minator" alloy wheels (5 ) (including mounted spare in rear tire well) ? 3-Spoke leather steering wheel ? Electronic Ignition ? Chrome air cleaners ? Free flow exhaust system ? 4 tail pipe center exit rear exhaust system ? Triumph Rubber Floor Mats COSMETIC CONDITION SUMMARY - 1973 TRIUMPH GT6 The paint and body on the GT 6 rate very high. In fact, it is far superior to the repaints that we see on the vast majority of our collector vehicles. While the paint work was completed several years ago, the GT6 paint and trim reflect a high level of care by its owner. Even upon an inspection from just a few feet away, the GT6 is very attractive and reflects the considerable time and energy that was spent on the paintwork. The paint is very high gloss, and consistent (the entire car was repainted and there is no suggestion that any panels/parts of the car have been touched up since). Since it was painted the car has travelled approximately 15,000 miles and has been garaged and covered when not in use. So, with the exception of some minor imperfections (nick & chips most of which are too small to photograph), the GT6 is very attractive, indeed. It is free from any significant dents, dings or damage and the bright-work is very good showing only very minimal loss of its original shine. Both bumpers are extremely straight and free from accident damage fitting with no unusual gaps or misalignment. The lack of exposure to salt and inclement weather is apparent on this GT 6. Close inspection of the trunk, under the hood, rocker panels, fenders and the usual areas of rust, reveal a clean, California, rust free car. As the photos indicate, the car is extremely straight and clean, and does not even have the surface rust found on many Midwest/East Coast cars of this vintage. The doors, hood, and trunk line up well, with even gaps, close and lock easily and securely. The doors do no sag, and the hinges are solid and rust free. The undersides of the hood and trunk are free from rust, significant dirt and grease and in excellent original condition. The entire engine bay has matching paint as do the frame members that were repainted when the car received its complete re-spray. Perhaps most important the car has excellent "bones" and there is no indication of any suspicious history, accident damage, or rust. The right side lower rocker panel does have two areas where jacks were misplaced that are very difficult to see when the car is on the ground. The floors are very solid, show no damage or rust and the underside only has the build-up of dirt and grease found on virtually any British car of this vintage. The other exterior trim including the chrome side view mirror, door handles, headlight trim rings, large chrome gas cap, and other chrome bits are also free of rust/pitting. We lived in the Midwest for many years and are still amazed at the difference between most Midwest & East Coast cars and the cars that have remained on the West Coast. This car clearly shows like a California car that has been used sparingly, well cared for, and lovingly maintained. The glass on the car is in excellent condition and the side windows roll up and down freely. The rubber was changed in all of the windows at the time of the repaint, and the rear windows pop out, and stay in the out position for improved ventilation. The interior is in really lovely condition, consistent with that of the exterior and exterior trim. From the seats to the dash, door panels and carpeting, everything has been well cared for over the years and the car has received replacement/upgraded interior bits, only as required to keep it looking its absolute best. There is hardly any noticeable wear on the entire interior. The interior, as the photos suggest (accurately) shows exceptionally well, not only for a car of this vintage but also for any car! There are no rips, tears or significant damage to the seating areas, carpet or other interior parts. The parts of older sports cars that typically show wear are in excellent condition in the case of this GT 6. The wood on the vertical portions of the dashboard is original and in very good condition with no major cracking or splitting. It does have lovely, aged patina that is so charming on older British classics. A close inspection of the interior would suggest that outside of a few interior trim bits, that the interior is virtually 100% original and unmodified from its original configuration. The steering wheel, gauges, switches and other components are original and in excellent condition. There is an opening for a radio but no radio is installed as the previous owner preferred to listen to the exhaust note, not the radio. Speakers are mounted in side rear panels from a previous radio installation. The side door panels are in very good condition and free from the warping and water damage that is often times present on the older TR6 cars. The pockets in the door panels are not stretched or ripped and are in excellent condition. The upper portion of the doors where there is a slight indentation to pull the doors do not have the usual cracks and are in virtually perfect condition...very rare in these GT 6 Cars. The headliner is in very good original condition and is free from any rips, tears or major damage but some "ripples" that can be seen in the photos. The visors are in place and good and the door locks are functional. The original keys and extras are included. The shift knob is a period wooden knob with a Triumph emblem. The Triumph is fitted with "Triumph" carpeted floor mats. The steering wheel is the original 3 Spoke sport wheel with a functional center mounted horn. The lower package trays are in excellent condition. MECHANICAL CONDITION To say that he GT6 has received an unusually high level of care would be an understatement. Frankly, the summary of repairs (listed below) speaks volumes about the owner's commitment to keeping the car in superb condition at all times. Additionally, the mechanics that worked on the car are British specialists that understand these cars and their unique service requirements. Mechanically, the GT6 in absolutely brilliant condition. It runs and drives extremely well and we would (and have) take the car some distance with a high level of confidence that it would be trouble free. The GT6 does not leak excessive fluids (it is British, so some "seeping" is appropriate!) or exhibit any mechanical problems. In fact, the car sounds wonderful, has excellent power, runs cool (even in our recent 100~ degree weather) and is an absolute kick to drive. The owner of the GT6 explained that the engine and transmission have been changed with a unit that had accumulated about 50,000 miles. The mileage on the odometer shows 97,079 but due to its age, it is difficult to accurately document the actual mileage so we will represent it as TMU (Total Miles Unknown). However, we can say that the car is tight, solid and rattle free and we could certainly be convinced that the mileage on the chassis is accurate. With a completely renewed braking system, clutch, suspension, rear end and other major work, the GT6 stops and steers straight and sure. The emergency brake is properly adjusted and the steering is free from excessive play and is precise. The syncromesh gears in the transmission are excellent and there is no "crunching" upon down shifts or up shifts. The clutch engagement is smooth with no chatter. The transmission does not slip out of gear and it shifts smoothly and properly. The GT6 has extensive documentation outlining repairs and maintenance for the past 10~ years. During that time, the previous owner has used the car very minimally, but regularly. As a result, the car has required regular maintenance and servicing but has not had significant/substantial mechanical needs. It has been reliable and trouble free. The repair records/receipts document the care that the car has received. The following is a summary of some of the work dating back 10~ years (Receipts in file for all work): Work performed within. 1,500~ miles ago Replace fuel pump ($229.42) 2,000 miles ago R&R valve cover and adjust valves. With the ongoing serving and considerable work during the past several thousand miles, the Triumph fires up immediately with the use of the manual, factory choke (it even stays out, as designed). We recently drove the car over 100 miles and it ran flawlessly. It does not overheat and has excellent oil pressure. The "torquey" 6 cylinder engine makes the Triumph much more fun to drive than many of the smaller displacement 4 cylinder cars that we are accustomed to driving. On the highway, the GT 6 is a nice car to drive. At 65-70 mph the car is revving relatively low at around 3,000 rpm. It is comfortable, free from the wind and disturbance of an "open" car and has amenities that the older British sports cars do not have (roll-up windows, comfortable seats, etc.). The wheels are classic, period style "Mini - Lites (in this case UK produced). They are in very good condition with only a few minor curb nick but no significant damage. The spare also has matching wheel. The lighting systems are fully functional including; headlights, turn signals, brake lights, emergency flashers and high beams. The horn works and is a very loud air horn mounted in the front grill. As a result of its age, of course the car is exempt from California's smog requirements (and virtually all other States). If there is any question in your particular State, we ask that you confirm its smog exemption, but as a 38-year-old vehicle it is almost certain to qualify as smog exempt in any part of the United States. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet.
