Lowered, obviously, its fenders stuffed to the sides with serious rubber and XXR rims that are perfect for this car. So it's just a hot looking Mister 2, right? Okay, it is real hot looking but there's something else; what is it about this MR2 that is so commanding? Where does this 1991 Toyota V6 MR2 get its swagger? Not from up front . . . . . . under the front bonnet is just a spotless area for the battery, brake hardware and other "stuff" that looks really important and hidden headlamp function is flawless, by the way. No, this track terror is a mid-engine two seater. We gotta look behind the cockpit to see what moves this rocket . . . What the hell? Is that a V6 in there? It looks so good, the unsuspecting would think this is simply an optional engine but Toyota never put a V6 in an MR2. Did they? Nope. But somebody stuffed one in this MR2. Somebody with a lot of skill and pockets deep enough to do the job right. You'll find this V6 under the hood of many a Lexus ES300 or Camry and in those heavier sedans, this fuel injected, DOHC engine is reliable and very powerful. Shoehorned in a sub-2,800 pound MR2 with MagnaFlow exhaust and the aforementioned suspension fortifications and the result is, well, difficult to describe. Blistering insanity? Sizzling psychopath? This looks, for all the world like an MR2 that rolled off the assembly line with a V6 engine. This 1991 Sports Roof was originally equipped with a turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder. Turbo Mister 2s were/are quite fast and there are just a few ways to give a light sports car that satisfying surge of torque that feels sooo good to the back side and puts everybody at the stop light instantly in your rear view mirror. More displacement and/or more cylinders. This MR2 adds more of both of those precious commodities and what it does to your bee-hind and to your soul when you nail it in first and second gear is made plain by an immediate wide-eyed grin and some seriously white knuckles. We're talking high pucker factor here, folks and everything you see on the beautiful exterior accurately reflects the world class performance this Toyota now possesses. The red repaint is dynamite appropriate and anyone can see at a glance (just as you did the first time you stared) this is not a Tercel and it is certainly not a normal MR2. The stance alone will send poseurs scurrying for cover and I guarantee you will smile with adolescent pride at the pristine perfection of a car that sits low where it should, with fenders filled to the brim with race-ready rubber and wheels. Check out those no-nonsense driving lights, the side body air intakes and the hint of a wing out back on rear hips bulging over Nexen 245/40ZR17 UHP tires. Wow, is right and it ain't just looks, fellas . . . . . . this T-topped rocket corners with vicious turn-in at speeds that will leave you breathless. You'll be sling-shoting from curves faster than you ever thought possible and the stunned look of disbelief on the hapless kid in his blatting fart-can Civic, giant rear spoiler, race stickers and all, will be priceless when you zip off his doors and rip out his headlights. Ohhhh, this is why people sin. As any guy will confess, a nice rear-end can close the deal in a hurry with a face this pretty. Of course the nicest rear knows how and when to be very naughty and this smooth metal beauty is bad-ass fast any time you choose to corrupt. The change to 1994+ tail lights, MagnaFlow pipes, diffuser and essential 245/40ZR17 rear rubber gives the back of this bullet an angry tone that is corroborated by a menacing V6 exhaust note just this side of pissed off. Jump on the throttle in a lower gear and this Mister does a delicious squat just prior to blurring everything in the peripheral. The everything-tucked-up-nothing-dangling appearance down here is no accident. This is a quality build, done right, well sorted out with no niggling issues to safety or compromises to comfort. Also; this thing moves. But, you already know that because of the video. You did watch the HD video, didn't you? Wow, what a (pretty) straight body that looks fast even standing still and a lot of folks think a stock turbo MR2 is a pretty fast car. True enough I suppose and if "pretty fast" works for you then, maybe this cruise missile is not for you. Similarly, if your fear threshold is low and/or you are a pussy, a car this authoritative might not suit your weak-kneed passivity. If however, you have the experience, and balls required to operate a serious, high performance two-seater at the very edge of its lofty capabilities, this insanely powerful MR2 might almost be a worthy partner with which to dance the chicanes. Insanity . . . or disbelief are what came to mind the first time I lit this thing off. I liked the dark tint and I expected the larger engine to increase performance but nothing could have prepared me for the spine-chilling acceleration of this new-muscled V6 MR2. It literally screams to red line in every gear, instantly narrowing concentration and bringing all conversation to a stop, mid-sentence. Everything works on this car (except the a/c) which is always nice and you'll be happy to know that the glass is clear and the wheels are round. This is where fun happens and the good news is; it ain't a dog house in here. Tilt, cruise, power everything and ice cold air blowing with the T-tops off on a North Dakota morning in March. The interior is perfect for motoring in winter or summer, no matter where you live. With a two seater, there's no extra room for people you don't like and neither of you will find much to complain about in this cozy cockpit. It's got lumbar support, seatbelts, all kinds of covered storage and real leather is everywhere on the steering wheel and shifter. This is a 3VZ-FE 3.0 liter DOHC V6 with a performance air filter and MagnaFlow exhaust system. It's clean, dry and starts every time with the tap of the key. We recently installed a new timing belt on this reliable power plant but be warned: be damn careful where you point this weapon because when this engine comes to life, you are going to be there in one hell of a hurry. XXR 962 alloy wheels in Gunmetal, wrapped with Nexen N7000 245/40ZR17 steel belted radials do all they can to keep this fiery rocket on the straight and narrow. The secondary objective of looking spectacular is accomplished moving or standing still and . . . are these killer wheels perfect for this MR2 or are they perfect? (only you can decide) If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then . . . this undercarriage is clean like new, dry like new and pretty like new, so . . . Look at that corrosion free chassis and fat stainless exhaust system by MagnaFlow. Could the factory do a cleaner installation? Look at all that clean, dry metal.
