Provide additional information including specific photographs or clarification of any part of our description of the vehicle. Thank you again, please let me know if I can be of assistance. Cheers and Happy "eBaying"! Paul R. Wankle, Pres. Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA A FEW ADDITONAL IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THIS AUCTION 1. The Auto Check Report (similar to Car Fax & used by eBay) indicates a "Minor Accident" on 5/2011. We have written support from the car's owner that this was a case of a cut convertible top resulting In its replacement along with a new, factory radio. Since the claim was reported to the insurance company, it was shown as an "accident" which is not correct. Of course, as a result, the cars top (the highest quality canvas) is a few months old and perfect. 2. The cars mileage on Auto Check reflects 65,545. However, while we could represent the mileage at this level (as many might), the reality is that the speedometer was changed and the actual documented mileage on the Alfa is approximately 95,000. As soon as the speedometer stopped working it was changed by the fastidious owner and the file contains supporting paperwork / documentation, proper under California law. 3. We also ask that you consider that this Alfa has received an Auto Check Report rating (details can be found on the eBay auction) score of "55." This is very high considering their "Auto Check Similar Vehicles Scores" of 24-50! ABOUT THE ALFA ROMEO SPIDER VELOCE The Alfa Romeo Spider was introduced at the 1966 Geneva Motor show, receiving rave reviews. The car was the last complete design by Battista Pinninfarina, founder of the Turin based design house, and designer of a wide range of Italian exotic automobiles. Over the years, numerous changes were made to the car, and the styling remained very pleasing despite increased requirements for stronger bumpers, and safety equipment. The mid-1980-s brought the square tailed cars with front chin spoilers, subtle rear trunk lip spoilers and larger side view mirrors. Unlike some of the other European sports cars, the lines of the Alfa matured very gracefully, until the end of the production of the Alfa Spider in 1993. Early Alfa Spider's were equipped with 1600 twin cam engines which were later increased in size to two-liter (1962 cc), fuel injected versions. The larger, current engines, proved to be very reliable, and offered excellent drivability, torque, and good overall performance for a small convertible. This particular 1991 Alfa Romeo Veloce is equipped with the following: * 2.0 Liter (1962cc) Double Overhead Cam Engine * Bosch Motronic MPI Fuel Injection * 5-Speed / Fully Synchronized Transmission * Electronic Ignition * Independent Front Suspension * Front Anti Sway Bar * Power Assisted 4-Wheel Disc Brakes * Steel Belted Radial Tires * Factory Alfa Spider Convertible (Coordinating Tan) Boot Cover * Duck Canvas Convertible Top * Tan Bucket Seats with Matching Suede Insets * Adjustable Head Rests * Electronic Tachometer * Water Temperature, Oil Pressure & Voltmeter Gauges * Padded 4 Spoke Sport Steering Wheel * Driver's Side Air Bag * 2 Speed Electronic Washer/Wipers * Dual Power Side View Mirrors * Produced as a "50 State Version" complete with Catalyst System * Locking Vent Windows * Day/Night Rear View Mirror * Tinted Glass * Original, Stock Spider Veloce Alloy Wheels (15") The Alfa Spider Veloce is considered by many to be the "Best of the Best", in late model Alfa Romeo convertibles of the 1990's. They are comfortable, fun to drive, and offer very attractive styling, at an affordable price. Unlike many of the earlier British roadsters, the Alfa Veloce Spider's offered increased refinement, performance, and reliability, as well. The Alfa also is fully equipped with improved "creature comforts" including; air conditioning, power windows, nice sound systems, power steering and beautiful interiors. "Opening up" the car to the sky above is simply a matter of undoing (from the drivers seat) the two latches from the windshield area, and pushing it back to the rear storage area...instant convertible! Considering its size, the Alfa Spider even offered ample trunk space for those long weekends on the coast, or to your favorite holiday destination. ABOUT THIS PARTIUCLAR 1991 ALFA ROMEO SPIDER VELOCE This 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider is a striking example of the late model Alfa Romeo Spider's that we have the pleasure of owning. We regularly seek out exceptional Alfa Romeo's, and during the past several years, we have been fortunate enough to represent 20+ Alfa Romeo Spider's. We appreciate the value of sports cars that have spent the majority of their "lives" in dry, West Coast climates, been well maintained and have supporting documentation (necessary to document ongoing/regular repairs and maintenance of the vehicle). A bonus is to find the vehicle complete with all of the original documents (owner's manuals, warranty booklet, anti-theft information, etc) and with limited ownership or a documented ownership history. Perhaps the single most significant feature of this Alfa outside of its excellent condition is the fact that it has had ONE owner since new. Additionally, the Alfa's executive owner maintained the car with a truly "Cost no Object" philosophy and relied on true Alfa specialists to maintain the Veloce Spider so that it would be in absolutely top condition at all times. We rarely see a car that has been this extensively well maintained (with records retained) with repairs completed on ANY recommended items without any questions asked. The file (outlined in some detail later in this write-up) even includes the preventative and warranty work performed by the Alfa dealer in the early 1990's. Our familiarity with Alfa Romeo's also gives us an advantage in identifying each cars strengths and weaknesses. One of the common failures on Spider's is the odometer / speedometer unit. While many cars claim to have very low mileage, the owner's are hard pressed to provide documentation of the actual mileage supported by receipts or other convincing information. Statements like "Oh, it's got about 50,000 miles" are sometimes offered but can be "optimistic" or totally inaccurate. Not so with this car. In fact, there is documentation of the mileage progression on the independent reports (Car Fax & Auto Check) and the actual replacement of the speedometer unit (completed within several days of it stopping) is documented by the repair facility that performed the work on the car for over 10 years. Considering the mileage accumulated prior to the change and subsequent to the new speedometer/odometer, the Alfa has approximately 95,427 miles. In any event, this Alfa has been driven fewer than 5,000 miles per year, since new. What else makes this an exceptional example of a later model Alfa Spider convertible? We ask that you consider the following highlights: ? ONE Long Term Owner ? Clear California title ? Fastidiously Well & Serviced & Maintained ? A True "Virgin Alfa" with No Paint or Body Work Reported by the One Owner of the Spider ? Initially serviced by the delivering Alfa ? Subsequent servicing by Independent Alfa Specialists Only ? NO Rust (Undercoated when new.refer to underside photos) ? Straight Body & Excellent Paint (Also totally rust free undercarriage / frame & suspension) ? Includes Comprehensive Maintenance Records dating back to the 1990's when the Alfa was virtually new ? Completely Stock - No Modifications ? Factory Alfa Romeo Radio It is very rare to find a pre-owned Alfa Spider that is complete and as "factory delivered" as this example. Specifically, the following documents with come with the car and have been with the Alfa since it was new: ? Original Owner's "Alfa Romeo" Binder Including the following: ? Original Owners Manual ? Owner's Log ? Maintenance Program booklet ? Rust Perforation Warranty booklet ? Dealer Directory ? Service Booklet / Alfa Dealer Network ? Radio guide and radio code card ? New convertible top installation information & 60 month warranty ? Consumer information ? Original Warranty Booklet ? Original Dealer Directory ? Even the original business cards of the original, delivering dealer ? Original touch-up stock (dried up) ? Factory original AM/FM/Cassette radio (even the original device to remove the radio is included) ? Original Spider Veloce Alloy Wheels ? Original Spare, Jack & Tools ? Original / Number Matching Engine & Transmission Has historically passed California smog including the stringent New Smog Test within the Past 90 Days (NOTE: Failed only as a result of the need for a new catalytic converter. Once replaced, the Alfa exceeded California's new smog requirements and will be delivered to California buyer's with a current smog certificate Not only is this Alfa a rare find due to the extremely good condition but the car has been used almost exclusively as a fair weather car. It has, as the chronological mileage history documents, been used regularly and never stored for prolonged periods of time. The car has received regular professional detailing and hand washing. BODY / TRIM /CONVERTIBLE TOP - SUMMARY The body is finished in "Bianco Freddo Code #230", a striking bright white, and of course, the original color of the car. As a Spider Veloce, the Alfa has the lovely beautiful tan interior that is unique to the Veloce version of the Spider. The car is equipped with the original, high quality rear convertible boot cover that is covered in striking, matching tan material. Often times the quality, factory boot is missing on Alfa Spider's and it is a very costly (and almost impossible to locate) item to replace. Not so with this car. The paint is very high gloss with no peeling, fading, or area of significant damage, or signs of wear. In fact, the owner reported that the car has all of its original paint. We inspected the car and had a professional complete an inspection as well. Everyone agrees that outside of the touch up (using the factory Alfa paint "stick") to a few minor bumper chips that no panels or parts of the car have been painted. It has been a long, long time since we have seen a 20 year old car where this is the case and, as a result, we have elected not to have any touch up completed on the few imperfections on the car (more on that later). As the photographs suggest, this is a really lovely Alfa. The cars exterior is in very good and unusually straight condition. The car's body is totally free from rust or pitting as is the exterior trim. A walk around the Alfa reveals a few minor flaws, mostly a minor nick or chip on the bumpers that are difficult (impossible) to see in the photos since they are so small. Also, the bases of both mirrors (where the mirror meets the body on both sides) were touched up early in the cars life and the paint is not as smooth as on the rest of the mirror or the high gloss body / paint on the rest of the car. Please keep in mind that we see full blown show cars all day long so our evaluations tend to be critical (and honest!). However, despite the few minor imperfections the car is striking and we receive compliments on the color combination. However, while we could have had the minor imperfections painted we chose not to for several reasons. First, we want to present the car without covering anything up. Secondly, since the car has never had any re-spraying and the flaws are so minor, we personally would not begin painting the car since the items mentioned do not detract from its overall charm and appeal. It is a truly lovely and all original example. The hood itself does not have the usual large front end dent that is often found on Alfa's that have been parked in "Big City" environments. The Alfa is even free from significant rock chips/damage to the front of the car that can be extensive on some Alfa Spider. The front license plate is in place so the car is in compliance with CA law that requires front & rear plates. The convertible top on the Alfa is only a few months old and is the highest cloth quality with a perfectly clean window and no signs of wear and tear or damage. Included is the warranty and information on the top. The replacement top is equal to (probably better than) the top that was fitted to the Alfa when the car was new and, fortunately, has not been changed to the inexpensive vinyl top found on the lesser quality Graduate model, and older Spider's. The rear convertible "boot" cover that covers the top when it is in the down position, is the high quality "hard" convertible boot (factory original), and is in perfect condition with fully functional zippers, and no tears, rips or discoloration. It does not appear as if this boot cover has seen much use based on its excellent condition (especially considering its light color). As expected with an automobile of this quality that has been garaged, pampered by its owner, and rarely (if ever) exposed to the elements, the Alfa does not have the typical rust found on sports cars in most parts of the USA. An inspection of the rocker panels, rear lower fenders, under hood area, spare tire "well", and undercarriage reveals a dry, clean and rust free car. The doors, hood, and trunk line up extremely well, with even gaps, and close easily and securely. The underside of the hood is very clean and free of dirt; oil and grease (see photos on the Website). The original factory stickers are in place on the underside of the hood. The door locks operate properly as does the lock on the glove box door. The trunk releases with the inside release, as per factory specifications, and has a working lock on the handle, located inside of the passenger compartment. There is also a gas cap release located inside the passenger compartment, which can be locked to secure the exterior gas cap. The plastic trim and other exterior moldings have no damage and are in excellent condition. The side windows are free from cracks and damage, and the electric side windows operate perfectly. The front windshield is free from any cracks, stars or damage and the chrome surrounding it, is in excellent condition. The wheels are in unusually good condition and show almost no signs of parking "rash" or damage and are fitted with matching, quality Pirelli (factory recommended) tires. INTERIOR The interior is in beautiful original, unmodified condition with minimal signs of wear, especially for a 20 year old convertible. Of course, as a Spider Veloce, the car has the upgraded interior with beautiful suede-like insets in the seats. Virtually every example of a late model Veloce that we have seen/owned shows significant wear on the front seats, either the bolsters of the seats or the suede portions (or both!), and on the dash. This Alfa's interior shows minimal signs of wear, far better than previous Alfa's of the same year. Frankly, the care provided by the cars one female owner is very apparent. The suede portions of these seats typically become very dirty and terribly worn, but this is not the case with this particular Alfa Spider Veloce. The driver's seat shows only minimal wear and the passenger seat is excellent. The seats do not show rips, tears or damage outside of some "nubbing" on the driver's side seat. The interior is extremely clean, and free from rips, tears and visible dirt. The exception is a small "chip" on the right side front knee bolster (passenger side) that is shown in the. The interior, door panels and other parts of the light tan interior are very impressive, indeed. The dash is finished in black, and the door panels are tastefully finished in tan and black and are virtually perfect. The center console is black, and in great condition, free from any cracks, damage or signs of wear. The trunk is finished in black carpet that is free from any rips, stains or damage of any kind. The door sills and door jambs are clean, and free from dirt and grease. Unlike many of the Alfa's that we have seen over the years, the dash on this Alfa has no cracks whatsoever, even around the dash vents. The retracting seat belts are original, free of any fraying or damage, as are the receiving parts of the seat belt units. The gauges are all functional and even the clock works, and keeps accurate time! The lenses are clean, and do not have any cracks or damage. The center console is also free from cracks and the while in the photos the shift boot is cracked, we have ordered a new one that will be installed prior to delivery. The shift knob is the original, as is the factory steering wheel, 4-spoke sport wheel and has the center-mounted horn that works. The Alfa is equipped with a driver's side air bag. The glove box contains the original owner's manual, and the manual for the stereo, along with the other factory documents. A thick (VERY thick) file of receipts will accompany the Alfa to document the repairs/maintenance outlined below. ENGINE & MECHANCIAL COMPONENTS A review of the extensive file on the Alfa history indicates that the Alfa was delivered to its original owner in June, 1991 by the delivering detail, Sports & Specialty Sales Alfa Romeo. Since that time, the original owner has been the exclusive and virtually only driver of the Alfa. The car received "excellent car and servicing" initially by the delivering new car authorized Alfa dealer and subsequently (for over 10 years) by a facility that does nothing but Alfa repairs and has for 25+ years. The extensive maintenance file reveals frequent maintenance and a "cost no object" approach to the care of Alfa. The complete file of receipts reflects almost fanatical care on this Alfa Romeo Spider and while it is too extensive to summarize in detail, the following is a all of the preventative maintenance and repairs: Scheduled early dealer maintenance as follows: ? 6,745 miles - First visit for miscellaneous warranty work ? 9,718 miles - Complete 10,000 mile service & miscellaneous minor warranty work ? 19,075 miles - Complete 20,000 mile service by dealer & minor warranty items ? 21,390 miles - major 35,000 mile service, 16 point safety check, new hoses, brakes, pads & rotors, rotate & balance tires, complete check of all system and fill / lube, complete detail ? Smog inspection - passed ? Periodic professional detailing ? Replacement life-time muffler ? 27,746 miles - 30,000 mile major tune-up, new battery, new turn signal lights ? 29,577 miles - Minor oil service ? Smog check - passed ? 39,666 miles - major Service. Valve shims, plugs, points dist. Cap, rotor, air, oil & fuel filters, oil and other fluids, new engine mounts and much more. New window regulators, new center drive-shaft support and bearings, new tires & other work. ? 39,666 miles - New front flex, u-joint, bracket and hood bracing. ? 53,618 miles - Major service including; oil service, new plugs and complete tune-up, change transmission fluid, new radiator hoses, new coolant, new OEM muffler, check all fluids and systems. Safety check / inspection. ? 63,957 miles - New air flow meter, coolant temperature sensor, new ignition wires, spark plugs and minor service. ? 65,545 miles - New trunk cable, major service (plugs, & tune), New rotors, brake pads and rear springs. Complete valve & A/C adjustment / service. ? Note speedometer changed on 2/27/08 with new unit. Future mileage below reflects cumulative readings including mileage at time of change and newly accumulated miles. ? 75,567 miles - New O2 sensor, new engine mounts, replace center support for drive-shaft, new door seals, new inner transmission shift boot, new wiper jets, new fuel gauge, complete oil service ? 87,000 miles - Complete tune-up, new clutch and related components, brakes ? 95,000~ Miles - New catalytic converter Please note that unlike many of the Alfa's that are neglected after several years of ownership, this particular car continued to receive the care and attention that it deserved up to the present time. As an example, recent repairs (within approximately 10,000 miles) include: a fresh complete tune-up, brake repairs, new clutch, engine mounts, center support mounts, a new catalytic, complete oil service, safety inspection and a thorough check of all systems by the servicing Alfa specialist. We are used to seeing well cared for cars but it is rare to see a sports car that has had such extensive proactive maintenance work done on a regularly scheduled basis. The change of fluids, frequent major and minor services, and other work to the Spider are sure to contribute to a long engine life and continued reliability. When it comes to drivability, this particular Alfa is absolutely great, and it runs and drives very well. The car is great fun to drive and does not exhibit any problems. The car starts immediately when cold and hot and runs cool, even in warm California temperatures. The battery is excellent and, as a result of the fuel injection, starts the car on the first attempt. For California buyers, the registration on the car is paid in full until January, 2012, so license fees are due at this time if the car is sold to a California buyer. The engine is very strong and does not smoke, leak excessive fluids (of course, it is Italian so some minor oil "seeping" is part of ownership). The Alfa idles smoothly at just below 1000 rpm, does not hesitate, and pulls strongly through the gears and, in typical Alfa fashion, has a wonderful exhaust note. One of the beauties of the late model Alfa's is that they are nice to drive on the highway and are more than capable of easily exceeding any posted speed limits. Because this car was driven carefully and never abused, the 5-speed transmission is in excellent condition with no signs of the characteristically weak 2nd gear syncromesh. The Alfa shifts can easily be made from 3rd gear to 2nd without the "crunching" that exists in some Alfa's. Reverse gear engages smoothly, unlike many of the Alfa's that we have drive/owned. Of course, the car absolutely never pops out of and shifts easily and smoothly up and down the gears. Having been replaced within a few thousand miles, the clutch engages properly and without slippage, chattering or fuss. The car steers straight and sure, the brakes work well and stop the car without any pulling, squeaking or noise. The emergency brake is functional. All of the other systems, lights, turn signals, dash lights, heater blower etc. are fully functional. The air conditioner was never strength of the Alfa cars and many owner's (including the previous owner of this car) never used the A/C. However, the A/C in this car is functional and blows cool. Thank You, Classic Cars Ltd. 925-846-1451 MISCELLANEOUS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) 1. Has it received a safety / light inspection? Yes, the car has been checked for turn signals, brake lights, and license plate lights. 2. What is the total mileage on the Alfa? The odometer currently shows 30,041 and based on the records, there is chronological documentation that the miles are correct. Also, the Car Fax report and Auto Check report appear to support the Alfa's mileage. 3. Was the work completed by professionals? Yes, all of the mechanical work was done professionally, and to a high standard. No backyard or "Do it yourself" mechanic has worked on this Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio. 4. What were the results of the independent inspection? The Alfa passed with no problem and no safety issues were identified. 5. What are the cars needs (if any) at this time? No "needs have been identified at this time. 6. Does the car have seat belts? Yes, factory shoulder harnesses (no belts in the rear area). 7. Can we have the vehicle inspected? Absolutely, we encourage inspections of this Alfa by serious, qualified individuals, or professional inspection companies. All we ask is that you call us at 925-846-1451 to arrange a convenient time since we are in and out of our offices quite a bit. We are unable to allow inspections 24 hours prior to the end of the auction as we are closed on Sunday. 8. Can you provide some "ballpark" costs of shipping costs around the United States? Yes, on a fully insured, ENCLOSED carrier (we do not recommend the more common "open" transporters for a car of this caliber) and delivered to your door, about $1500.00 for most of the East Coast, $1300.00 to some of the Southern States, and around $1000 to points in the Midwest. The cost to Los Angeles would be in the area of $500.00. PLEASE check with us as these are just estimates, NOT firm shipping costs, and rates are changing regularly due to fuel costs, exact locations, and other factors. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
