It comes with an original window sticker, dealer copy, build sheet and sales contract from the first of just two owners. It is a complete, numbers matching WS6 Trans Am T-top with a "Z" engine code in its VIN. Which means this loaded Firebird has an honest-to-goodness Pontiac built 400 cubic inch big block under its iconic shaker hood scoop. There were two versions of this legendary engine available in 1978; 180 horsepower (75,051 produced) and the 220 horsepower W72 (8,251 produced) making this, by far the fastest (and rarest) Firebird you could buy. The late '70s were strange days for high performance iron from Detroit, a year when this Trans Am matched the strongest Corvette in horsepower (smaller engine, less torque and a W72 Trans Am could outrun America's 'only' sports car) and cost just a few hundred dollars less than a base 'Vette. There is not a spec of rust on this car, the original paint is gorgeous and the interior is knock-out. It is clean and dry underneath, the engine bay is beautiful and this Firebird is functionally unbelievable - as in; it starts, runs and drives like a car that is four years old, instead of 33 years. As well it should with less than 40k on the odometer but that's not all. Everything works, it does not shake or vibrate and this rare Trans Am is factory equipped with practically every option available. When you consider this car's verifiable low mileage, complete argument-ending documentation and its top-dog high performance status when new, it is easy to see why some people would consider this 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6/W72 a worthy candidate for display in a museum. This stunning time capsule certainly deserves such preservation but it would be a shame to let all this performance (and memories) languish behind closed doors - unenjoyed. Won't you please rescue this car from such a fate? Why we chose this big-block Pontiac: Because it is rare, good looking and has the (also rare) condition and quality that attract serious buyers. This Pontiac has it all; exclusivity/low production, top performance package for this model and strong period association. These were intensely desired cars when new and we know from past experience that there are lots of people who couldn't afford a Trans Am in 1978, but would jump at the chance to fulfill that dream today. We've seen it a thousand times and we know with absolute certainty; this low mileage, high pleasure diamond will push every single button with such a buyer. We sell classic cars - we know what that customer is looking for and we found this rare, highly preserved Trans Am for that lucky buyer that is serious about owning the best. Viva Las Vegas Automotive Boot Camp: Our 130 point inspection found a well maintained, beautifully preserved Trans Am that apparently, has averaged about 1,200 miles a year since new. The original paint is awesome, the rust free body has never been hit, never been repaired and all exterior trim and tape looks great. Amazing also is the new car quality and feel of this Pontiac on the road. It really does drive and function like a three or four year old car; no steering looseness, no wander, it does not shake and the engine rumbles to life with the tap of the key. When the old Palmer facility closed, this same mechanic went to the new Axtell Taylor dealership down the street and continued as the only factory technician to work on this car. What we've done this car: Gave it a lengthy detail, inside and out, top to bottom and underneath too. Took these perfect pictures on a perfect day to showcase this (almost) perfect example of car cool, circa 1978. We did an HD video too that lets you see, hear and feel this powerful Pontiac do its thing. (that is, functioning reliably and looking good while doing it) Research/background, what was said about the Trans Am when new, what people are saying now: In the power sapped late '70s the Trans Am was a true thoroughbred. During a time when many "performance" cars were big into tacked on/taped on exterior flash with small engines and little actual performance, a Trans Am could be had with a real 400 cubic inch Pontiac big block. There were two versions of this 6.6 liter legend and both provided lots of wheel spinning torque but it's the not-often-seen W72 engine that gives this Trans Am its top dog status. Even a Corvette in 1978 struggled to keep up with a W72 equipped Firebird and today, Trans Ams with this rare option are the most sought after among late 2nd gen F-bods. Of the 187,294 Firebirds produced for 1978 (Trans Am production 93,351) only 8,251 had the more powerful W72 version 6.6 liter engine. This stunning Trans Am is one of those few. (and the only one perhaps, with miles this low in condition this spectacular) Along with the stronger engine, this car also has the WS6 "Trans Am Special Performance Package" which, among several other things included wider (8 inches vs. 7 for regular Trans Am) snowflake cast aluminum wheels, larger rear sway bar and poly bushings throughout. BF Goodrich Radial T/A rubber is nearly new and the original Chesterfield Brown finish is gorgeous. Options include Custom interior, Formula steering wheel, tilt, cruise, power windows/locks and remote trunk release. (interior condition: amazing) Optional custom cloth velour interior still looks awesome. There it is folks; barely three miles a day, with the amazing quality and condition of a well maintained four year old car. (in a car that is 33 years old) The T-top was an expensive option in 1978. These are dark shaded and in terrific condition. T/A 6.6 liter V8: 220 horsepower @ 4,000/320 ft-lb torque @ 2,800 RPM "X7" engine stamp correctly identifies this Pontiac built 400. Beautiful corrosion free undercarriage. This Trans Am has a 3.23 posi and absolutely no rust. "Stowaway" spare has never hit the ground and has the original inflator. Not a spec of rust in the trunk. Underneath the rear parcel shelf showing the jack and optional rear speaker. Most new Pontiacs shipped to such an area (the city of Logan is over 4,500 feet above sea level) would have the high altitude emission system and corresponding RPO "NA6" on its build sheet. The W72 version T/A 6.6 engine was not high-altitude certified. Consequently, it is doubtful that the most powerful Trans Am available in 1978 would have been found in a northern Utah dealership's regular inventory. It is perhaps especially rare to find a non-high altitude car factory equipped with an engine block heater, (K05) although this would not be an unusual option for a special order vehicle destined for a cold climate area near the Utah/Idaho border. Original dealer copy. Original sales contract. All original owner documents and receipts are sleeved in a loose leaf notebook. Brake pads look great. Small ding. Driver's door handle is cracked. Worn away piping on side bolster. The left turn indicator in the instrument panel works, but is loose behind the trim.
