Vehicle Detail
I have a 1972 BMW Bavaria for sale. I want the potential new owner to know exactly what it is and what to expect. I would rather scare you off with the details than hear that I failed to mention a detail. That being said I consider this car a fun summer driver that will never be concourse, but IS worth a small investment to complete a restoration. The color is a very old and crackled Baja blue but was originally green, with a Camel color leatherette upholstery. I have wet sanded, buffed and waxed the paint so It looks good from 20 feet away but it needs a paint job among other things. I have restored a few BMW 2002's in the past so as our family grew I started looking for one of the rare 4 doors to drive and restore. Two years ago I found this Bavaria and it totally fit the bill. I liked the equally rare status of the Bavaria but the extra room and the 6 cylinder are a big bonus. I drove it about 40 miles home and put it in the garage to work on it. 4 months later I had replaced all the brakes, calipers, several hoses and lines and the brake fluid twice. I repacked the wheel bearings and assessed the rust in the car. It required minor repairs in the floor which are not professional but unnoticeable and solid. After tuning it up and changing the wheels and tires we proceeded to drive it problem-free all summer long. Along the way it has gotten many updates and repairs and has never once left us stranded or even skipped a beat. Some of the services I have performed include but are not limited to: electronic ignition upgrade, new coil, tune up and valve adjustment, wiper motor, great German dual horns, blower motor upgrade, professional radiator flush and test, electronic engine cooling fan (fan clutch delete), A/C delete ( have all old a/c parts), I've replaced the drive shaft mounts, bearings, Guibo, shifter mounts, front struts, stabilizer links, tie-rods etc. About two months ago I found a rust free green hood and installed it. The doors, roof, trunk and most other panels are straight and rust-free*. The trunk is clean even around the fuel tank and shock towers are awesome. It has great glass and a full tool kit that is 100% there but only 80% original. It comes with the original steel wheels with tires and all four old hubcaps in addition to the BBS style wheels and tires it currently wears. It has 4 working seat belts. The interior is mostly complete and looks good, speedo and temp gauge work but odometer and fuel gauge do not. (It needs a fuel tank sender to make the fuel gauge work, 75.00) All lights inside and out work, except it does not have a hi/lo beam switch. (another 75.00) It is quiet, always starts right up, all lights work and headlights are old school Hella oem and are in great shape. The exhaust is old but original in design and has a few old patches on it, it is quiet but has a raspy tone when accelrating, Here's some of the stuff it needs. I'll get the worst right out there. * It had a repair to the right front corner a long time ago and it is rusting. It needs a right front fender because the fender has rust in several places, I'm sure it could be repaired but a clean used one would be best. Also the inner fender panel that this fender bolts to and holds the strut top is rusted and perforated in a few places. In the first 4 months I cleaned the area, coated it with rust encapsulating and then a layer of fiberglass. It has held up great but needs to be properly repaired with metal. Their were also two removable inner fender panels that were badly rusted that I fabricated from aluminum, they are installed and look/work great. There are several other relatively small rust issues on the body. There is rust bubbling from under the stainless trim in a few places. There are two holes on the right rear wheel opening, one in front and one behind. Both rocker panels need to be replaced and welded. I fabbed sheet metal panels and used seam sealer and riveted them over the holes and sprayed them with black bed-liner paint. This was nearly 2 years ago and they are holding up very well and are basically unnoticeable, but they should both be replaced and welded. The interior is surprisingly good for it's age, with the drivers seat having a split down the middle of the seat bottom and has color matched duck tape on it. The other seats are very good, the carpets are hanging in there as well and there is only a very small split in the dash. The headliner is excellent. For those serious about this car, I have a variety of resources to offer. First off are the many photos I have taken since the first day I brought it home, along the way I have joined a few BMW forums and started a restoration process thread. I have also registered this Bavaria with the 'Senior Six Registry", and compiled a list of individuals and businesses who have parts for Bavarias. Please contact me with questions or additional information. 616 334 6261 Michael Although I am confident this car would drive across country, It is sold 'as-is' with no warranty expressed or implied.
