Vehicle Detail

Revised listing -- now no reserve! Top bidder takes her home! For your consideration, a very clean example of a 1974 Audi 100LS. My mom drove one of these cars (okay, two of them) for my entire childhood, so when I saw this one six years ago, I had to have it. I purchased it from the son of the previous owner, who had inherited it from his elderly aunt. So, that makes me either the third or fourth owner, depending on your point of view. I believe the 42K miles to be genuine, and I believe this to be the original paint, which is holding up splendidly. There is a small amount of surface rust, mostly along the passenger rocker panel, but no perforations that I can see. There is some surface rust on the front valance, and some beneath the "Audi" script on the right front fender. The car is solid, and all doors close with a satisfying ka-chunk. The interior is vinyl and cloth, both of which show very little wear, and the seats are extremely comfortable and practically showroom. The wood dash is clean with a small amount of delamination at the far right end. Vinyl dash is perfect, no cracks. All glass is good, the rubber seal around the rear glass is showing its age (visible cracks). Door panels are all lovely. The faux veneer (contact paper with wood grain) on the steering wheel has a bubble, but the steering wheel itself is perfect. The body of the car has a couple of dings, scratches, and chips typical of a 37-year-old car. There is no radio, as originally ordered -- there is actually an antenna-delete plate installed on the fender, which is a really cool little feature. When I bought the car six years ago, it was running well enough for short uneventful drives. To my shame, it has only gotten worse. Currently, the engine starts easily enough with a spritz of ether, and sounds good while it runs, but it stalls quickly. I am no mechanic, my skills plateau at oil changes and spark plug gapping, and the car is beyond my ability to repair. While the car was still running well enough to putter around the block (as recently as two months ago), she was running hot. Last month, I spent a frustrating day trying to diagnose and remedy this car's issues, and while it was idling (and the temp needle was climbing) I noticed that the electric fan never came on -- could be a relay, or a switch -- worst case scenario, a replacement electric fan should clear this up. This car will need its brakes sorted. Before the engine started stalling, it frequently lacked power on hills and at takeoff -- I believe this is the fault of the Solex carb. My mom had a new '74, and traded it in on a fuel-injected '76 model because of this very complaint. Now, I don't think that fuel injection is in order, but I do think that upgrading to a Weber 32/36 is a must for the next owner. This is the same engine that Porsche put in the 924, so there's a lot of performance lying in wait there; a Weber carb would go a long way towards waking it up. It's a relatively inexpensive upgrade, as well -- I've seen them on the Internet for $300 or so. This car deserves better than I can give it, and thusly it's on offer here. It is my hope that someone with either greater skills or funds scoops her up, straightens her out, and keeps this piece of Audi history rolling for years to come. I've tried to be painfully honest in this description, and I hope that it is obvious that this car will need to be trailered to its new home. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to answer.
