Vehicle Detail
Up for bids is this running, driving, '61 Mercedes 220SE. The Mercedes W11 series ran from 1961 through 1971. This is a very early car, with a body (karosserie) number of 00248. This is a car that you could actually use as a daily driver or take to the next level and do a full restoration. Most project W111 coupes I see are non-running, incomplete cars, this one is way ahead of the game in the fact that you can actually drive it as you restore it. Click to enlarge any of the photos below, this car is being sold with NO RESERVE. The car has had a repaint in its original color of Papyrus White, DB 717. The paint is not of the best quality but is ok for a driver, a cut and buff could help it out. Although of low quality, the paint application was actually pretty good, with no areas of overspray to deal with. There is no rust bubbling on the body, although you will find areas of filler throughout, some quite noticeable. The body is straight with the exception of a shallow dent on the driver's door. The car rides on a set of Michelin MX4's with good tread. The windshield has been replaced with a quality Triplex piece by Pilkington, it's in great shape. Both the front and back glass rubber seals have been replaced, but some of the other window weatherstripping is weak. The dash wood has been refinished and is in nice shape. The chrome on the car is in good shape with the exception of the window frames, which show some pitting. Both bumpers are very straight and in good condition. The grill, surround, and star are very nice. Lights and signals all work, the tail light lenses are in very good condition. The interior was redone some years ago and is in nice condition. The desirable ivory steering wheel shows some spidering but no cracks. The horn pad is in great shape for its age. All of the hard to find trim pieces are present on this car; the early door hardware, the chromed mirror, the chromed horn ring, and all of the small profile dash knobs. The trunk contains a vintage spare and the factory jacking equipment. All of the instrumentation and controls are functioning except for the tachometer, clock, and heater fan. The ventilation sliders move freely. The radio works and has good sound. The car runs and drives pretty well, I wouldn't recommend any long distance driving before going over it, but for around town the car does well. A little cold blooded, but drives nicely once it's warmed up a bit. The motor feels strong, the car doesn't smoke, and it's not a leaker. The suspension and steering feel tight and the car shifts well. Brakes are adequate but should be flushed and bled. The undercarriage shows recent brake lines and new suspension bushings. The rear muffler will need to be replaced. The car has had rust issues in the rear wells, the right side well has been patched from the inside of the trunk. The floor pans are very good, as well as the trailing arm mount areas, both common spots for rust. Overall this car could be used as an around town beater, or as a good candidate for a full restoration, the choice is yours! About the Reserve Price: This car is being sold with NO RESERVE.
