Vehicle Detail

1962 Pontiac Bonneville 2-door hardtop Engine: 389 4-barrel (code KJ) Transmission: Borg Warner T-10 4-speed close-ratio Rear-end: Stock with 4:11 limited slip I will let the pictures speak for themselves; this car is sold as is. ENGINE: Runs awesome. Sounds awesome. Will glue you in the seat! I have never had it apart but I assume that someone put a mid-range camshaft in it because it won't idle below 900 without dying, has a mean lope and pulls very strong past 5000. Edelbrock intake manifold, dripper valve covers, dual point distributor with new cap and rotor, new plug wires and plugs, new chrome 60,000 volt coil with ballast resistor. Rebuilt Edelbrock 750cfm AFB four-barrel (vacuum secondaries, manual choke). New radiator, new high-flow thermostat, new temperature sending unit, new one-wire alternator, good battery, new starter solenoid, and fresh oil and filter. The headers are a very rare set of two-piece tri-Y with dumps that I believe were made by Hedman and are no longer available. The rest of the exhaust is intact except for a hanger here or there. It leaks oil from the rear, but not real bad like some rear main leaks. When I drove it every day last summer I had to put a half-quart in about once a week. DRIVETRAIN: Borg-Warner T-10 4-speed. This was originally a Super-Hydramatic car. Has a hurst shifter, works fine. The transmission upshifts fine (1-2-3-4), but it will not downshift unless you are excellent at rev-match double clutching (I'm not). I thought at one time that this was a shift-linkage adjustment issue but never got around to investigating it. I thought this as opposed to the synchronizers because if they were the problem it wouldn't upshift so great. I drained the oil and put "synchromesh fluid" in, but no gain. The clutch is great and I just adjusted it. It grabs real well and has a really strong pressure plate. I never did anything with the rear-end, but it drives fine, doesn't make noise, and the limited slip works great (always leaves two streaks). BRAKES, WHEELS, TIRES: Tires are good. 14" rims in front and 15" rims in the rear. The suspension is good except for some squeaks here and there. I have had trouble with the brakes on this car since the day I bought it. Since, I have installed a new dual-cylinder master cylinder, new front hoses, new wheel cylinders all around, new front and rear shoes, new star adjusters, and replaced all of the brake lines. Currently, the brakes are okay but needs a little work to stop like it ought to. The power booster does work, but I’m not sure that it is doing all that it’s supposed to. Regardless, it will need to be trailered. The brackets to mount calipers and rotors from a 1970 Bonneville on the stock 1962 spindles can be found on eBay. With new calipers and rotors from NAPA and wheels that would fit, it would be an inexpensive and much needed upgrade for such a powerful car. BODY: There is rust on this car, but none of it is deep on the frame or any critical areas. This is mostly because some parts of the underside were painted white at one time. The floors are solid. The trunk floor pan is entirely rusted out because the deck lid leaks, but the steel an inch or so above the rotted out floor is perfect for welding in a new pan. There are a few rust holes on the rear quarters and the back of the deck lid, and the rear quarters have areas that are rusted out at the bottom. The front fenders are fiberglass; the hood is steel. The side and rear glass are all in great shape. The windshield has a couple cracks on the passenger side but doesn't leak. INTERIOR: The "Ventura Interior" is BEAUTIFUL! Bucket seats, rear bench and dashboard are excellent. Floor pans are solid. Carpet is okay. Headliner is nice except has come loose around rear window and a seam has come loose. The carpet on back dash under rear window is shot. All gauges work, except that the ammeter only indicates current draw (has an alternator, not wired into the shunt). Has an awesome Stewart Warner triple-gauge box with oil pressure, temperature, and vacuum. Not sure that it came with the car, but the color matches the dash uncannily well if it didn't. Big full sweep tachometer, works great. The heater works, the interior lights work, and all the exterior lights work except that the turn signals sometimes do not flash. It has electric windows, all of which work. It was an A/C car but that was long since removed. The windshield wipers and clock do not work, and the radio gets nothing but static. This vehicle is for local pick-up or the buyer must make all arrangements for shipping. It must be trailered.
