Vehicle Detail

1971 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 406 Forestry Manila Green Exterior with Black and Green Interior 7,900 Original Miles 729 Hours on the Original OM 352 Diesel Engine 20 Forward Gears --- 8 Reverse Gears Portal Axles for Ground Clearance and Tractive Advantage Full 4 Wheel Diff-Lock Means Positive Traction at all 4 Wheels 4000:1 Crawler Gear Ratio This truck is a real bull and its capabilities and durability are legendary. Jaws drop and thumbs go up every time I pull it out of the garage. It pulls like an ox and it's off-road abilities exceed the nerves of most people. Obstacles which are insurmountable to most vehicles are a non-event in this truck, and it's a real test of will to find its limits. You don't have to abuse this truck to get where you want to go, as it will idle up anything your brave enough to try to go up. Pulling power is such that these trucks are commonly used as railroad and airport shunts. In stock form, 406 Unimogs are more capable than most custom built 4x4's, and the engineering standards exceed them. It has the ground clearance and tractive advantages provided by portal axles, low gear ratios, and axle articulation, in a combination that few vehicles can duplicate. Combine these attributes with the torquey, heavy duty 5.7 Liter Mercedes I-6 diesel, bullet proof drive train, large tires, power steering, and awesome approach and departure angles, and you've got capabilities few vehicles in the world can match. Spring service always includes engine oil and filters, new fuel filters, transmission oil change, differentials oil change, portal axles oil change, and these have been completed this year. The engine in this truck has never had the injector pump monkeyed with, and it starts and runs flawlessly as its low hours and miles would suggest it should. It makes the big-truck engine sounds that I like, and it commands attention. It has air over hydraulic brakes which again make the big-truck pressure relief sound that gets attention. Turning radius is surprisingly tight. The transmission is a 6 speed with a 3 range cascade box which gives an additional 6 intermediate, 4 crawl, and 4 super-crawl gears, for a total of 20 forward gears. It has 2 reverse gears in each range which gives it a total of 8 reverse gears. Driving this truck on the street only requires the use of 3rd though 6th gear in the main transmission. These transmissions are very robust and have stiff gates, and as such they have to be shifted methodically. 6th gear is stiff to get into, due to lack of use in its previous forestry service life, but continues to improve the more it's driven. I use this truck on my farm, and mostly keep it on rural and old state roads, or just around town. It has a top speed of only 45 mph, which has been fine for me, but I want you to know up front that this truck is not a highway cruiser. The clutch is very strong, and works beautifully with the torque of the engine. You can stop mid - incline and release the clutch from idle, and literally climb straight up with no clutch stress or slippage. It's a two stage type clutch due to having PTO's..... It has front and rear PTO's. The rear PTO is currently set up to drive an auxiliary air pump. Four wheel drive engages properly and is shift-able on the fly from 2 wheel drive, to 4 wheel drive, to 4 wheel drive full diff-lock. The massive front bumper has a powerful 12,000lb Warn Winch incorporated into it. The exterior was painted about 6 years ago, and is holding up very well. There is a small grey primered repair on the passenger side front roof from where a tree limb fell on it in a storm, and there is a small perforation near the drivers side headlight, which could be easily remedied when touching up the roof. Otherwise, the body and bed are in good condition. I have about a half of a quart of the Manila Green paint left over from the previous paint job, and of course it will go with the truck. The inside of the bed and the interior floor and engine cover are covered with bed liner material for protection and sound deadening. The bed sides and tailgate fold down and are removable. The bed itself has 4 upside-down cups which sit on 4 balls, and it lifts off easily. The interior was also reupholstered several years ago, and is holding up well. The seats have had their foam replaced and they and the door panels are covered in green and black material with custom "Unimog" and the Mercedes Star stitched into them to match the exterior color scheme. I have represented this truck honestly, but understand, regardless of the low miles, this is a 40 year old truck, and no warranty is implied or given. I welcome inspection or any questions, so please satisfy yourself prior to bidding. Please do not bid on this item unless you have funds available and fully intend to purchase. Shipping will be the responsibility of the new owner, and payment must be made in full prior to shipment.
