Vehicle Detail
1971 Volkswagen 1302 Super Beetle! This sweet Super Beetle would make a great project for the mechanically inclined VW Nut! Best of all, it doesn't need that much to get it cruising! In 1971, the standard Beetle was getting its butt kicked by offerings from Japan like the Corolla. After an extremely embarrassing showdown in Road and Track, in which the Corolla beat the Bug in EVERY category but personality, Volkswagen decided that its old bug needed a new attitude. Being that the Golf was still a while away from its release, VW decided that the new Super Beetle had to offer a sportier approach with more utility than previous Standard Beetle models. Achieving this goal would require an overhaul of the chassis and suspension, which was a costly endeavor for VW but provided improved handling, stability, and most importantly CARGO SPACE! Like all '71 Super Beetles this model is equipped with a 1600cc horizontally opposed "flat four" cylinder air-cooled engine. The best way to describe this vehicle is to check out the PLETHORA of provided pictures. A few facts about the car, as provided by the owner are: *Mileage As far as we know, the odometer has turned once, making the actual mileage 183,500. It currently reads 83,500. Being that it is only 5 digits, we cannot accurately determine its absolute mileage. *Body: In the pictures can be seen areas of surface rust in many spots. It appears primarily at the edges of windows and pieces of trim. Rust can also be found where panels meet and where water pooled or sat due to body contours. All of the rust appears to be repairable and the body appears to be sound overall. Obviously a paint strip, significant mudwork, and a respray are in order, but the body panels appear to be in great overall shape, which helps to maintain originality. Obviously there exists a possibility for other issues to arise upon removal of the paint and a full inspection of the sheetmetal. Still, bear in mind the overall condition of this vehicle, and the relative rarity of the '71 Super Beetle, especially in the overall condition of this particular example (AND AT OUR PRICE!) *Floorpans: Appear to be solid from a momentary inspection of both the interior and the underside of the car. *Engine: Is reported to crank and spin freely. From the looks of the fuel filter, it will need the tank drained and fresh fuel put in the tank. A visual inspection also shows that it needs its belt replaced. As for the carburetor, its safe to assume a rebuild is in order to run at 100%. The engine condition is be represented AS-IS due to the number of variables that could come into play given the fact that we haven't heard it run. *Wheels/Tires: The pictures show a flat rear passenger side tire but by this car will roll on four tires inflated with air at the time of auction's end. The wheels will need to be, at minimum, removed, stripped/scuffed/blasted, and repainted. At worst, they need replacement if you want a factory fresh look. *Interior: Is largely there. A little musty from age, but IN FAR BETTER CONDITION THAN MANY OTHERS we've seen at the same price. The dash is completely there, but cracked in spots from heat exposure. The front seats appear to be aftermarket and the rear bench appears to be factory. *Electrical System: As far as we know, the electrical system is intact. Because the battery is dead from sitting, we cannot test any electrical compenents. *Brakes: As far as we know, all brake components are present on the car. Because the vehicle will need to be towed, we cannot accurately test the system to see if it maintains pressure. *Glass/Windshield/Safety Lights: Both the windshield, rear glass, and side windows are all in tact. The headlights and tailights are present on the vehicle, though the headlights will need to have its trim pieces replaced due to rust damage. *Trim/Bumpers/Odds and Ends: Obvious in the pictures, the trim and the bumpers have seen better days. Assume that most pieces of trim, the bumpers, rubber components and weatherstripping, etc will need to be replaced. Also, the door handles have a habit of sticking sometimes, but at the time of the auction were working fine. The above description is meant to be a breakdown of our knowledge (and lack thereof) of the condition of the vehicle overall. The pictures are the most important part of the description, so please view them completely and carefully. This vehicle can be seen in person in Pasadena, MD prior to the auction's end.
