Vehicle Detail

This is a unique customization to the Porsche 968. The 968 was the last evolution of the original 944, but with all of the latest refinements such as a 6-spd transmission, suspension upgrades, bigger brakes, updated appearance, and all of the luxury options one would expect for its market price point. For this conversion I have installed the venerable Chevy 350 V8, in its latest form as the LS series of motors, first introduced in the Chevrolet Corvette in 1998. This fuel injected aluminum block V8 produces tremendous low end torque and top end, yet as installed actually weighs 70 lbs. less than the original Porsche power plant. This conversion has been completed by hundreds of enthusiasts over the years so the reliability of the powerful Chevy engine coupled to the sturdy Porsche drivetrain has been proven on both street and track. Features: Quality conversion done by an automotive/professional engineer. 968 chassis (brakes, suspension, anti roll bar, etc comparable to a 944S2 or 944Turbo 6 Spd Porsche rear mounted Transaxle (not available in the 944) BMW Hydroboost braking system (rebuilt with all new seals) with pressure accumulation for engine-off emergency brake assist. Custom Headers with Ceramic coating. 2 into 1 Stainless steel exhaust remains reasonably quiet so as not to overly expose what is under the hood. Front and Rear O2 sensors and Catalytic converter are in place if needed for state emissions requirements. The new owner can have these programmed out of the LS1 tune if not required for state regulations. Fuel tank venting system if needed for state emissions requirements. 2002 Camaro SS 5.7 Liter LS1 engine with approximately 20,000 miles since professional rebuild by John West of Raleigh, NC. This is the same engine used in the C-5 Corvette of the same year. Texas Speed & Performance valve train rated for 1700 to 6600 rpm, consisting of: Thunder Racing TR224-12 Cam Shaft Comp 918 blue stripe springs, Upgraded Timing chain, and Texas Speed 7.4 inch pushrods K&N Air Filter and Custom Air Intake Walbro Fuel Pump LS7 Corvette Pressure Plate Renegade Custom Clutch Disk Ram Light Weight Aluminum Flywheel ARP High Tensile Strength Flywheel bolts Remote Fuel Filter/ fuel pressure regulator Aluminum oil cooler with Thermostatic Control Standard 968 Luxury Items (all fully functional)--ABS, PS, PB, Air Bags, AC, PDL, PSR, PW, Cruise Control, Alarm, AM/FM Cassette w/ 6-Spkr sound system Collapsible spare tire, 12 volt air compressor, jack & lug wrench, tools, and (2) removable tow eyes. Rebuilt power steering rack Renegade Custom oil pan with extra large capacity and road-race style spring door traps Precisely integrated wiring system exceeds OEM quality. Separate engine power electrical fuse & relay block. Hobbs underhood accessory light New Alternator New Power Steering Pump New Battery New Leather Seats New leather shift boot All gauges functional--Fuel level, water temp, oil press, alternator, tachometer, speedometer, odometer Wilwood clutch master cylinder Remote clutch bleeder with speed bleeder attachment for one-man bleeding of clutch. New plug wires, plugs, fuel filter, oil filter Custom Pilot Bearing adaptor with quality SKF brand roller-bearing (standard needle bearing pilots are found to be unreliable in this application) Clean title--No Wrecks, No Rust. Car originated from California/Nevada having a broken Porsche motor (timing belt failure) and was purchased expressly for this project. CarFax Report included. C5 Corvette bell housing Custom bell housing to torque tube adapter plate, custom motor mounts Rear transaxle mount stiffened for reduced stress on drivetrain CV joints. New half-shaft mounting bolts. What it needs: Paint: I would conservatively rate an 8 out of 10. I know many sellers would call it a 9, but I strive for honesty (See my 100% positive feedback rating as testimony to this fact). Standing 10 foot away the paint is great, up close shows micro scratches and just a few very minor scrapes in the clear coat. A good buffing could probably bring the paint to a 9 or 9.5. There are a few door dings (please refer to the photographs) but nothing major that couldn’t be pushed out by a Paintless Dent Repair Technician. Tires: The rears are fine but the fronts are a little dry rotted and show side wall wear from having been driven while flat (not me, I bought it that way). The tread depth is good. They are probably OK as long as you drive the car within the speed limit and not on the race track for fear of a blow out. I have not replaced them as I did not wish to invest any more money and figured the new owner might want to put new tires of their own choice on all four wheels. PCM Programming: The Chevy PCM (Powertrain Control Module) could be reprogrammed to remove the engine trouble codes that are Causing the "check Engine Light" to come on. The OBD II is throwing codes for P0449 (Evap Vent Valve), P0452 (Evap Press Sens Low), P0480 (Cooling Fan 1), P0481 (Cooling Fan 2), and P0803 (Skip Shift Soln Malf). This is completely normal because these circuits are not used in this conversion and can be easily programmed out of the PCM with the right equipment. If you were going for the reprogramming, you might also want to have the engine tune remapped to take full advantage of the headers, intake, and performance cam. The car runs fine as it is but a remapping will provide a bit more power. Trunk Carpet: The carpet in the rear hatch area does show signs of sun damage and some abrasion. I keep it hidden under the cloth luggage concealing cover that came standard with the car. If this is of concern, you could either find a good carpet set from a wrecked 968 (they do show up from time to time, but it must be a 968 because the rear carpet from a 944 will not fit) or have the windows tinted to hide the faded carpet from outside view. Rear Hatch Struts: have become weak with age, requiring two hands to raise the hatch (one hand to unlock, the other hand to raise the hatch). The inside electric hatch release does work, but the hatch will not raise due to the weak springs. Air Bag Light: The air bag light on the dash panel is on due to having had the airbag disconnected while the conversion was taking place. The air bag computer can be reset by any Porsche dealer. About the Car: 1994 Porsche 968, 6-Spd Manual Transmission, VIN WP0AA2960RS820360 The Chassis has approximately 171,400 miles on it. The odometer is working properly. Midnight Blue paint, cashmere beige leather interior. Power windows, power mirrors, power brakes, power door locks, power sun roof, cruise control, AM/FM Cassette with 6- Speakers, Antilock brakes 8-way power adjustable driver's seat, 4-way power adjustable passenger seat, driver's and passenger air bags. folding rear seats, rear wiper, matching rear spoiler 16" light weight aluminum cup style wheels with Porsche Center Crest. Approximately 170k miles on chassis. About the Engine: Pulled from a wrecked 2002 Camaro SS, Automatic Transmission, VIN 2G1FP22G322117447 Professionally built by John West in Raleigh, NC approximately 20k miles ago. In addition to the car, the transaction will include: Complete wiring harness drawings to properly document all modifications (on CD & Flash Drive) 968 Parts Book (on CD and Flash Drive) Laminated Glove Box Card showing common replacement item part numbers Copy of all part purchase receipts. (on CD) 944/968 Owners workshop manual (on CD) Original 968 Owner's Manual (Hardcopy) Stock LS1 camshaft (if the new owner desires to reduce the horsepower somewhat or needs to change the valve timing for states with more stringent exhaust emissions tests). Custom Sun Shield Ready-Fit car cover of Kimberly-Clark Technalon fabric I will try to provide technical support with regards to the conversion even after the sale. This is a quality conversion that you can drive anywhere right away and work on the minor details later, if you so choose. The 944/968 Porsches were known for their exceptional handling, some claim one of the best handling cars ever produced. With some real horsepower under the hood this car is capable of tremendous performance. It is a “sleeper” that gives no outward appearance of having been modified other than that low V8 rumble when sitting at the stop light. Addition 5/20/11: I have been asked by several people what the horse power of the engine is. Thunder Racing (the maker of the Cam Shaft) provides a Dyno Graph for a similarly prepared LS1 engine here: http://www.thunderracing.com/dynographs/?action=read&pgid=62&width=630&height=520&KeepThis "398 HP at 6200 RPM, 388 ft-lb at 4500 RPM. Use this as an approximation only.
