Vehicle Detail
Here we have a really great find. This is a 1962 Porsche 356 Super 90 Coupe in great shape. This project is the one you've been waiting for. You won't find a better deal on a project as solid as this. The car was on the road until recently when the owner began to take it apart for a full restoration. It's a great color combination in signature white over black, and includes the rarely seen original option of Speedster style side spears. All original panels, decklid, doors, etc. are present and stamped 929, including the UNkinked hood. Even the wheels are date matched, stamped 3/62 Lemmerz. Included is S90 engine 806302, which is a period correct Super 90 motor, the original motor from the Factory was 805819 . The sheet metal on this car is in great shape with most needed repairs done and refinished. The paint shines well but is showing its age with some flaking and some bubbling starting to appear below the surface in spots, please see pics. It could be left as is and well appreciated. The seats are in great shape. The engine, S90 806302, is apart and needs to be reassembled. All of the included parts are pictured, it may need some additional bits to completely reassemble it. Crank, carbs, flywheel, fan shroud and heads confirmed to be original Super 90 pieces. The crank is tagged that it has been ground to second under and magnafluxed ok. According to Karl Ludvigsen in his book, Excellence was Expected, the Super 90 effectively replaced the Carrera 4-cam motor with its introduction in 1960. So having a Factory Super 90 is about the closest thing you can get to a Carrera, without the headache of 4-cam maintainence. Here is what Ludvigsen had to say, "There remained a need, especially in the competitive American market, for a Porsche with more punch. It was filled with the introduction of a completely new engine for the 356B, the Super 90 or 1600 S-90, replacing the former Carrera de Luxe." If you want a car that will stand out in the crowd of restored 356s, this is the car for you. Finished, it will be worth a mint. Get in on the ground floor and reap the benefits!
