Desirable Factory Hardtop 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifoglio Superb California "Quadrifoglio" - Very Well Maintained Example Northern California Car - Fewer than 4,000 Miles per Year! Absolutely Striking in "Rosso" (Red) with Limited Edition "Quad Interior (Black / Gray Leather) _______________________ NOTE: Our listings sometimes get rather lengthy. However, we continually hear from out of state / out of country buyers (the majority of our clients) that they prefer the level of detail that we provide. However, if you are not prepared to read multiple pages of description, we recommend that you review the "Specifications" on the car along with viewing the photos. Also, if you'd prefer, please call us at 925-846-1451 and we'll gladly discuss the Alfa Romeo and answer any questions over the telephone, including about our Buy it Now policies. Yes, the Alfa can be purchased prior to the end of the eBay auction. Again, give us a call for details. ALSO, PLEASE NOTE: EACH TIME WE LIST A VEHICLE ON EBAY WE RECEIVE COMMENTS THAT THERE ARE NO PHOTOS OF THE INTERIOR, ENGINE, UNDERCARRIAGE, ETC. OF THE CAR. THERE ARE 100 PHOTOS OF ALL AREAS OF THE CAR BUT, WHEN YOU REACH WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE LAST PHOTO, YOU WILL NEED TO SCROLL TO VIEW THE REMAINING PHOTOS. IF YOU ARE STILL UNABLE TO SEE THE PHOTOS, PLEASE CALL US AT 925-846-1451 AND WE WILL PROVIDE A LINK FOR THE PHOTOS (IT IS A VIOLATION OF EBAY POLICY TO LIST THE URL ON THE EBAY LISTING). All of our photos are taken in natural light and we do not "Photo-Shop" or touch-up the photos in any way. The cosmetic quality of this 1986 Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio (both inside & out) is accurately reflected in the photographs. The "madness" has begun in the various auction venues around the country. We often times see a wide range of collectible cars / special interest cars sell for inflated amounts in the "heat of the moment." This car is offered at a VERY realistic price and, unlike bidding on cars in an auction environment, you will have the benefit of information & history on the car prior to making a buying decision. Equally as important is the fact that Classic Cars Ltd. has been in business for 18+ years and enjoys an excellent National / International relationship with 600+ positive eBay feedback items. We can provide references in addition to those left by customers at Yahoo Reviews, Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA. (Please enter this information in Google to read our reviews) THANK YOU! CLASSIC CARS LTD. 925-846-1451 ABOUT THE ALFA ROMEO SPIDER The Alfa Romeo Spider was introduced at the 1966 Geneva Motor show, receiving rave reviews. The car was designed by Battista Pininfarina, founder of the Turin based design house, and designer of a wide range of Italian exotic automobiles. Over the years, numerous changes were made to the car, and the styling remained very pleasing even in light of increased requirements for stronger bumpers, and safety equipment. The mid-1980's brought the square tailed cars with front chin spoilers, subtle rear trunk lip spoilers and larger side view mirrors. Unlike some of the other European sports cars, the lines of the Alfa matured very gracefully, until the end of the production of the Alfa Spider in 1993. Early Alfa Spider's were equipped with 1600 twin cam engines which were later increased in size to two-liter, fuel injected versions. The larger, current engines, proved to be very reliable, and offered excellent drivability, torque, and good overall performance for a small convertible. This particular 1986 Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio is equipped with the following: * 2.0 Liter (1962cc) Twin Overhead Cam Engine * Fuel Injected Engine * 5-Speed, Fully Synchronized Transmission * Electronic Ignition * Independent Front Suspension * Front Anti Sway Bar * Power Assisted 4-Wheel Disc Brakes * Steel Belted Radial Tires * Air Conditioning * Power Windows * Gray Bucket Seats with Red Stitching / Carpet * Adjustable Head Rests * Electronic Tachometer * Water Temperature, Oil Pressure & Voltmeter Gauges * Padded 4 Spoke Sport Steering Wheel * Driver's Side Air Bag * 2 Speed Electronic Washer/Wipers * Dual Side View Mirrors * 50 State Version - Catalyst System * Locking Vent Windows * Day/Night Rear View Mirror * Tinted Glass * Factory Quadrifoglio (Upgraded) Alloy Wheels THE ALFA QUADRIFOGILIO ("QUAD") In 1986, Alfa Romeo introduced an upgraded version of the Alfa Spider, the Quadrifoglio the Alfa that is considered the "Best of the Best", in Alfa Romeo convertibles of the 1980's. The cars could carry a sticker price of over $21,000.00 in 1986 and with options we've seen cars with a delivered price tag to the original owner of over $25,000.00. To put this in perspective, in 1986, a Porsche turbo 911 cost $32,000.00~. Needless to say, the Alfa was a very expensive sports car in 1986! The "Quad" as they have affectionately been nicknamed by a large group of enthusiasts saw revisions to a number of both interior and exterior items. The top-of-the-line Spider Quadrifoglio possessed an interior similar to that found in the Veloce, but with blood red carpets and gray leather seats with contrasting red stitching. On the outside, the Quadrifoglio was distinctively styled with attractively enhanced bodywork consisting of front and rear lower bumpers as well as side skirts. It also came with unique 15' alloy wheels and, perhaps a removable hardtop that many believe to be the most attractive removable hardtop ever produced for a sports car. Alfa offered the Quadrifoglio in only three colors: red, silver, and black. The three levels of Spider (Graduate, Veloce, and Quadrifoglio) were offered to American buyers until 1990 when significant changes were made to the exterior styling. The Alfa Quadrifoglio is not only a very attractive mid-priced sports car but offers good performance, comfort and a high "fun to drive" quotient. Unlike many of the earlier British roadsters, the Alfa's offered increased refinement, performance, and reliability, as well. The Alfa's were fitted with numerous "creature comforts" including air conditioning, power windows, good sound systems, and striking, uniquely styled interiors. "Opening up" the car to the sky above is simply a matter of undoing (from the driver's seat) the two latches from the windshield area, and pushing it back to the rear storage area and Voila...instant convertible! Considering the overall size of the Alfa, the car even provided ample trunk space for those long weekends on the coast, or to your favorite holiday destination. HISTORY OF THIS LOCAL 1986 ALFA ROMEO QUADRIFOGLIO As a result of being in business for close to 20 years a very large percentage of the car that we receive come to us from long time friends, their acquaintances or local collections. We regularly receive cars that have "lived" in California their entire lives, many with only a few owners over the course of many years. We must admit that it is becoming increasingly difficult to locate limited owner cars that have been in the Bay area since new. However, this Alfa Romeo is a good example of such a car. In fact, it has not had limited owners, it had had one owner since new! On 9/30/86 the cars proud owner took delivery of the Alfa from now defunct Nohr's Imports, Alfa Romeo Dealer #6661. She has owned the car ever since and until we acquired it just a few weeks ago. The cars ownership is fully documented by both Car Fax and Auto Check with both reports showing consistent mileage and no negative findings. The cars ownership is reported as "One Owner" and the documents reflect that the car has been registered in San Francisco bay area communities (as a result of her various moves) but supports its registration to one owner for 25~ years. Also, in the case of the Auto Check Vehicle History Report, it is important to note that the Alfa scored "64", well above the "Similar Vehicle Score" of 25-50 for comparable vehicles. We've had the pleasure of owning more Alfa Romeo's during the past several years than probably any other Marque and are approached regularly to consider the purchase or consignment of Alfa's. Frankly, we decline more cars than we accept since many of the cars have high mileage, poor maintenance history or adverse Car Fax reports (indications of accident damage, theft, flood, or mileage inaccuracies). Our experience tells us that good solid Alfa's can be reliable cars if they have been well maintained. Sure, like any 25~ year old car, even the best example will have some "realities" and will not be perfect but we look for vehicles with excellent "bones." Specifically, we make every effort to offer cars that are mechanically sound, free from rust & damage, enjoy a history of good maintenance and limited ownership. This '86 "Quad" is one of those cars. ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR ALFA ROMEO SPIDER QUADRIFOGLIO This 1986 Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio is a nice, excellent running & driving example. We ask that you consider some of its many benefits, including: * Limited, long term ownership (One owner since new) * Always in Northern California Car! * NO rust or significant body damage * Straight body with beautiful high gloss paint (re-painted by Ferrari paint specialist) * Totally Clean Car Fax supporting one owner * Includes the following original documents that were delivered to the car's owner: - The Owner's Manual - The Audio System Owner's Manual - Authorized Dealer Directory - Alfa Romeo Road Atlas - Alfa Romeo pen - Maintenance Program Booklet - Spider Quadrifoglio (Reflects initial servicing at the dealership in Burlingame, CA & the original delivery date) * Serviced at Alfa Romeo dealership & an independent Alfa specialist * Original spare, jack & tools * Factory original convertible top * Includes factory original hardtop (re-painted at the time of complete re-paint) * High quality car cover (Used in garage.car never stored outside) * Original Quadrifoglio Alloy Wheels in excellent condition * VERY well maintained & serviced by previous owners (and documented) * Original / numbers matching engine & transmission Not only is this Alfa is a rare find due to its good condition, but also, it has been a California car and has not been exposed to the salt and inclement weather that is so prevalent in many parts of the United States. During the past several years, this has been strictly a weekend car that has seen very limited, but regular use over the course of the several years. It has been only hand washed and waxed, as needed, and professionally serviced and detailed. Of course, the Alfa has been garaged and "suburban used. " BODY / TRIM / TOP The body is finished in its original factory color of "Rosso". Personally, we believe that, when finished in red, the Alfa Quadrifoglio is one of the more attractive of the Spider's of the late 1980's. As a Spider Quadrifoglio, the Alfa has the lovely beautiful interior that is unique to the Quadrifoglio (or "Quad") version of the Alfa Spider. The interior has lighter gray seats with red stitching, unique and attractive red carpet (and so very Italian!) to contrast the gray seats, and black exterior. The door panels and dash are finished in a lovely combination of black and gray. The paint is high gloss with no peeling, fading, or signs of damage. As the photographs indicate, this is a very lovely car, indeed. The car received a complete repaint by a facility that does very high end repainting including Ferrari's and other exotic automobiles. The quality of the paint is excellent and far superior to what we see on many Alfa's that have been inexpensively repainted. The car was refinished in its original factory color of "Rosso" red and, as necessary, trim removed to ensure an excellent final product. The time, effort (and investment) certainly show! The cars exterior is in superb condition and, perhaps most importantly, is totally free from rust, pitting or damage. Upon a close, critical inspection the normal signs of normal use can be seen and include a few rear bumper imperfections, a touched up bike scratch on the far front right fender and the usual minor scrapes to the lower spoiler on the car as a result of its relatively low ride height. Please keep in mind that we regularly see full blown show level cars so our condition assessment tends to be more thorough (accurate) than many sellers. However, even with its minor flaws, this Alfa Is striking and free from many of the exterior flaws that are present on cars of this vintage (large side door dents / chips, scratches, broken glass, etc.). The hood is free from the usual parking dent/damage on the front (nose) of the car. The information obtained directly from the previous owner (and supported by a thorough inspection of the vehicle), suggests that the Alfa has ever been involved in a serious accident, or had any major damage of any kind. The front of the car is free from "road rash" and the front "nose" does not have the usual damage seen on "big city" Alfa's or those with high highway mileage. Any minor imperfections do not detract from the overall appearance of the Alfa Quadrifoglio. The convertible top on the Alfa is the factory original and the top mechanism "bows" operate smoothly. However, frankly, the top has seen better days. Since this Alfa was used primarily with the hardtop in place, the top was stowed for many years and the top has shrunk and the rear window is yellowed. Because convertible tops are available for a wide range of prices, we are leaving the decision up to the new owner when it comes to replacing the top. Also, many of our West Coast buyer's have no use for the convertible top since they use these cars with the top down all year round. Other customers utilize the hardtop and prefer the appearance of the Quadrifoglio with the unique hardtop in place. So, for all of these reasons, we have taken the soft top issue into account and have made the appropriate pricing adjustment to the Alfa. As expected with an automobile that has been cared for by one owner since new, this Alfa has rarely been exposed to the elements, especially during the past several years. In fact, the car has been driven with the factory hardtop in place as opposed to taking it off and on for each season. The "Quad" does not have the typical rust found on sports cars in most parts of the USA. An inspection of the rocker panels, rear lower fenders, under hood area, spare tire "well", and undercarriage reveals a dry, clean and rust free car. The doors, hood, and trunk line up well, with even gaps, and close easily and securely. The underside of the hood is very clean for a vehicle of this age and free of significant dirt, oil and grease (see photos on the Website). The original factory stickers are in place on the underside of the hood, inner side door, trunk and all of the labels remain undamaged and legible. The trunk is finished in the original factory red color and is dry and rust free. Some signs of stains are noted. The Alfa logo is embedded on the most forward panel that, when lowered, exposes the tools and jack. The spare tire well is also clean and totally rust free and the spare is in very good condition with only minor marks from being stored. The door locks operate properly as does the lock on the glove box door. The trunk releases with the inside release, as per factory specifications, and has a working lock on the handle, located inside of the passenger compartment. There is also a gas cap release located inside the passenger compartment, which can be locked to secure the exterior gas cap. The exterior plastic trim and other exterior moldings have virtually no damage and are in excellent condition. The power side windows are functional and free from cracks and damage. The front windshield is original to the car and carries the Alfa insignia to support this fact. It is in very good condition with no cracks, or noticeable stars/chips and still has the antenna in the windshield. The chrome surround strip around the windshield is in excellent condition. INTERIOR The interior is all original and unique to the Quadrifoglio version of the Alfa Romeo Spider's built only for a few years from 1986-1989. The car has the gray sport style seats with red carpet/trim. Virtually every example of a late model "Quad" that we have seen/owned shows wear on the dash, carpet and many other areas of the interior (we attribute this wear to the exposure from the sun). This Alfa Quadrifoglio is no exception but, as the photos reflect, the interior shows well. In fact, the interior is good with some imperfections. Specifically, under the carpeted mats there are a few tears (not noticeable with the mats in place). Also, the seats are structurally very good with none of the usual tearing that we see on the side bolsters. The driver's side seat does not show any major rips or tears but has a very small wear spot on the flat portion of the seat that "extension" where the area just before your knee rests. The passenger side seat is excellent and free from any damage only showing the fine patina of aged leather. The Alfa's most recent owner has lovingly cared for the car, and it shows. The light color of the seats results in some discoloration but, again, the interior is very presentable. The dash is covered with a dash mat and the normal few dash cracks. A dash cap would cure this problem and the existing dash mat is designed to prevent any further cracking / splitting. The dash is finished in black, and the door panels are tastefully finished in black and gray as was factory standard issue. The center console is black, and in great condition, free from any cracks, damage or signs of wear. The dash has no cracks, again unusual for most Alfa's of this vintage. The trunk is finished in the original red carpet that is free from any rips, or damage but shows some stains on the carpet that we expect could be cleaned, but it is not excessively soiled. Of course, there is absolutely NO rust in the trunk. The original spare is in place as are the original tools, jack and all of the instruction / owner's manuals. The door sills and door jambs are clean, and free from dirt and grease. The retracting seat belts are original, free of any fraying or damage, as are the receiving parts of the seat belt units. Even the fasteners that hold the shoulder harnesses remain in place. The gauges are all functional and display excellent readings. The lenses are clean, and do not have any cracks or damage. The center console is also free from cracks and the shift boot is in excellent original condition. The shift knob is stock as is the steering wheel. The center horn button is also totally stock and has the Alfa insignia. Of course, the horn is fully functional. The "Quad" has a stereo with a removable faceplate that has been misplaced. We will replace the radio with an AM/FM CD prior to delivery of the car to its new owner. The "Quad" includes the stock rear speakers that are neatly mounted on the rear "package shelf" behind the front seats. This is a great location since it does not result in cutting the door panels and provides excellent sound for the AM/FM / CD system. The Alfa comes with the original owner's manuals and other documents referenced in this write up and seen in the photographs. ENGINE & MECHANICAL COMPONENTS The Alfa Quadrifoglio runs and drives very well. Within the past 7 days, the Alfa passed California's strict new dynamometer smog test and the required California safety inspection without any problems. Both test results are, of course, documented by independent testing facilities. The car is registered in California and carries a clear California title. It has "lived" in California since it was new in 1986. A discussion with the car's owner suggests a true concern for ensuring that the car received frequent maintenance and a "cost no object" approach to the care of Alfa. This was truly her "baby" and a tear was shed when the sale was finalized. For the Alfa Romeo service work, the car was either serviced at the Alfa dealer or at specialty repair facilities. For the first several years, the Alfa was serviced exclusively at the Alfa Romeo Dealership and the Alfa Maintenance Booklet reflects Alfa servicing stamps through the major serice at 30,000 miles. Subsequently, the Alfa Quadrifoglio received ongoing maintenance at specialists including the following reported relatively recent repairs: - R & R clutch assembly - Replacement brake master cylinder - Rebuilt fuel injection system - Major Service: (Plugs, tune-up, rear end fluids, filters, etc.) - 90K - Regular oil services including lubrication, filters and adjustments - Flush cooling system / new coolant - New tires (matching set of and alignment - Brake replacement including new e-brake shoes (More than 60% remaining brakes) - Repair of power windows and replacement of power window motors, regulator and pulley While most receipts were retained by the car's owner, a number of moves around the Bay area resulted in "misplaced" receipts. So, we had the mechanic verify the condition of the car and all of the reported repairs / maintenance appear to have been completed. Unfortunately, we often see cars for sale that have had little or no maintenance over the years. It is refreshing to see a car that has received good are and runs and drives as it should. The frequent change of fluids, (often times exceeding manufacturer's recommended guidelines), coolant changes, rear-end lubrication and tune ups are certain to contribute to a long engine life and continued reliability. Preventative care has made this a dependable, reliable Alfa that should go years without any significant investment in repairs. When it comes to drivability, this particular Alfa is absolutely great, and it drives like an Alfa that is only a few years old. The car is great fun to drive and does not exhibit any problems. The car starts immediately when cold and hot, and runs cool, even in warm California temperatures. The battery is excellent and, as a result of the fuel injection, starts the car on the first attempt. The Alfa is currently registered in California and has and always has had a clean title. The engine is very strong and does not smoke, leak fluids, or exhibit any drivability problems what so ever. The Alfa idles smoothly at just below 1000 rpm, does not hesitate, and pulls strongly through the gears and, in typical Alfa fashion, has a wonderful exhaust note. As a result of the 5-speed transmission, the car can be driven easily at highway speeds with absolutely no problem. The characteristically weak 2nd gear syncromesh shows absolutely no weakness in this Alfa as a result of the transmission rebuilt that was completed within the past few hundred miles. The Alfa can easily be down shifted from 3rd gear to 2nd gear at speed, unlike other Alfa Romeo cars that demonstrate weak 2nd gear syncros when this is attempted. Reverse gear engages smoothly, unlike many of the Alfa's that we have driven/owned. Of course, the car absolutely never pops out of reverse or forward gear, and does not have any transmission, rear end noise. We attribute the strength of the transmission to the car having been under the ownership of the woman owner that never abused the car, rushed the shifts or mistreated the Alfa in any way. There is no noise in the driveline and the clutch engages properly and without slippage, chattering or fuss. The car steers straight and sure, the brakes work well and stop the car without any pulling, squeaking or noise. The emergency brake is fully functional. We have owned more Alfa Romeo's than we can count over the past 25 years and feel confident that this cars mechanical condition is very good, indeed. With additional attention to some minor cosmetic issues the car can be gradually improved and, as a rare Quadrifoglio, is almost certain to retain its value over the years. Thank You, Classic Cars Ltd. 925-846-1451 MISCELLANEOUS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) 1. Has it received a safety / light inspection? Yes, the car has been checked for turn signals, brake lights, and license plate lights. 2. What is the total mileage on the Alfa? The odometer currently shows 93,660 and based on the records, there is chronological documentation that the miles are correct. Also, the Car Fax report and Auto Check report appear to support the Alfa's mileage. 3. Was the work completed by professionals? Yes, all of the mechanical work was done professionally, and to a high standard. No backyard or "Do it yourself" mechanic has worked on this Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio. 4. What were the results of the independent inspection? The Alfa passed with no problem and no safety issues were identified. 5. What are the cars needs (if any) at this time? The vehicle is nice and can be used as is. A replacement convertible top could be added and the interior would benefit from some detailing / cleaning and perhaps re-freshening. The carpets (covered by nice carpeted floor mats) have some tears and there are a few minor flaws on the seats and dash as is typical with sports cars of this era. However, the car received good car by its owner who has used the car less and less over the years due to personal reasons. The previous owner reported that the air-conditioning worked but hadn't been used in some time. The A/C equipment is in place but it does not appear to be blowing cold and may need to be charged or repaired. We have not investigated the cause. We must admit that, our experience with the previous sale of Alfa Spiders (and Quad's) is that most owners are not at all interested in the A/C on these cars. Plus, as any Alfa repair facility will attest, the quality of the air conditioning system, even when the car was new, was not fantastic. 6. Does the car have seat belts? Yes, factory shoulder harnesses (no belts in the rear area). 7. Can we have the vehicle inspected? Absolutely, we encourage inspections of this Alfa by serious, qualified individuals, or professional inspection companies. All we ask is that you call us at 925-846-1451 to arrange a convenient time since we are in and out of our offices quite a bit. We are unable to allow inspections 24 hours prior to the end of the auction as we are closed on Sunday. 9. Does the hardtop included with this Alfa? Yes, the hardtop is included and is not only structurally sound but in very good overall condition both outside and inside (the headliner). It was used but remains in nice condition with the characteristic fine cracks in the fiberglass that are not noticeable in the photos (too small to see in photos). The rear window is excellent. The Alfa will be delivered with the top in place. 10. Can you provide some "ballpark" costs of shipping costs around the United States? Yes, on a fully insured, ENCLOSED carrier (we do not recommend the more common "open" transporters for a car of this caliber) and delivered to your door, about $1500.00 for most of the East Coast, $1300.00 to some of the Southern States, and around $1000 to points in the Midwest. The cost to Los Angeles would be in the area of $500.00. PLEASE check with us as these are just estimates, NOT firm shipping costs, and rates are changing regularly due to fuel costs, exact locations, and other factors. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales? We will be glad to discuss the sale of the car prior to the end of the eBay auction. Inspections of vehicles (by appointment only) must be completed within 24 hours of the end of the auction. Out of state buyers are responsible for the high bid and any shipping costs. California buyers are subject to the appropriate sales tax, DMV transfer, and fees associated with the purchase of any used vehicle sale in the state of California. We mail, via Priority Mail, transferable documents within 48 hours of the transfer of funds unless, of course, the transaction is local. While shipping and transportation costs (if appropriate) are the responsibility of the winning bidder, we can assist with locating a suitable transporter. We regularly ship cars all over the USA/World, and can often times locate very competitive rates for transporting vehicles door to door, to a local terminal, enclosed, open, etc. Please call us for specific information/rates to your location. We meet some great people and fellow enthusiasts, and only rarely do we have problems with non-paying bidders. Please be certain that you are prepared to buy the car if you bid, or call us at 925-846-1451 before the end of the auction if we can answer any questions. If you have a "sunglass" rating or fewer than 10 feedback ratings on eBay, please call us before you bid so that we can discuss the bidding process, etc. If we do not hear form you, we reserve the right to delete your bid. Thank You & Happy Bidding Classic Cars Ltd. MyStoreMaps improve local and international eBay sales.
