Vehicle Detail

1971 Jeepster Commando. This is one sweet commando, nicer than it has any right to be. It is not restored, not modified or lifted, it is the way that it should be. It is a cancer free truck. I bought it a few months ago and have enjoyed it but need to find one with an automatic transmission so that my son can use it to learn to drive. I have the Jeepster listed at 68,000 miles because that is what the odometer says. I do not know if it is 68000 or 168000. The condition of the truck leads me to believe that is is 68000 but again, I have no documentation either way. Mechanically the truck is fantastic. It runs great, purrs. It has the original numbers matching Dauntless V6. Engine and tranny are fantastic, clutch is great. the Jeepster tracks straight and true. I am surprised how nicely it goes down the highway third gear is tall enough to cruise at 70 mph with no trouble at all. There are two issues with the engine that I want to make sure to communicate. Once in a while the engine will "diesel" upon shut down.I don't know if that is a carb tuning issue or a timing issue but it only happens from time to time. The other thing is that I think the starter is beginning to get tired, again, once in a while it will spin and not engage the motor. The car has never let me down and both of these issues are too intermittent for me to worry about, but I just wanted to mention them in the ad. The truck is the original gold color with a refurbished white hard top. All the glass on the truck is in great shape, no cracks or chips. The paint is 90% original. The tailgate was either replaced or repainted but it does not have the original paint on it. There is a little touch up on the right rear fender down near the bottom, not from rust or from a dent, it was simply a respray over the normal sandblasting that happens behind the rear wheel. The body is remarkably straight...no dents and NO rust. It is amazing that the truck was never involved in a fender bender but seeing is believing. The interior is really cool. The dash and door panels are in great shape original paint etc..the seats are really cool, the original striped seats. The rear seat is in great shape, the two front seats have tears in the lower portion but the upper portions are in great shape. I do have Bestop seat covers for the front seats but I like driving it with the original seats showing, wear and all. You can see both in the pictures. The previous owner installed dynamat sound deadening material on the floor and then installed complete set of rubber mats in the truck. It is a very nice job. He installed new auto carpets in the back and then in the very rear another pretty cool mat. You can see it all in the pics. The rear interior of the truck was repainted with the tailgate...interior wheel humps, etc. All gauges work perfectly...although the gas gauge is a little optimistic! Somewhere along the line two extra gauges were installed, an amp meter and an oil pressure gauge, both work perfectly and are mounted nicely under the dash. Heater and heater fan and two speed windshield wipers work fine. There are two suspect places in the truck. It was a mystery to me for a while but i finally figured it out. In the rear of the interior just ahead of the tailgate there is a spot on both sides that seem to have been a little rusty and then painted over. I realized the other day while putting the hard top on that these are the places where the tailgate hinges meet the floor when the gate is closed. Over the rear the hinges rubbed the paint off the interior and it developed some surface corrosion...the person who painted the interior did not eliminate all the corrosion before they painted the interior. This is not a cancer patch but a case of continued abrasion form the tail gate hinges. Undercarriage is in great shape, nothing but some surface rust. The fluids have all been changed, front and rear differentials, tranny and engine oil are all brand new. 4WD works great with working locking hubs etc...All original wheel covers. Tires are nearly new...95%. The only thing that isn't original on the car is the radio, it is an after market unit that doesn't work. The only other thing on the truck that doesn't work is the cigarette lighter. All lights and blinkers work, interior and exterior. The truck is all manual, no power steering or power brakes. Happy to answer all questions and happy to show the truck to any one who cares to stop over to my house in Novato. On Apr-27-11 at 14:24:33 PDT, seller added the following information: To settle any questions as to the mechanical condition of the Jeepster I want you to know that if the buy it now button is used I will have the rig tuned to eliminate the intermittent dieseling and also have a new starter installed at my expense.
