Vehicle Detail

When it was first introduced, the Ford Fairmont and it’s virtual twin, the Mercury Zephyr, made it one of the most successful new car introductions of all time. Called by some “an American Volvo”, it provided a reasonably stylish exterior with plenty of room, a large truck, a wide variety of powertrains and great economy. This car is the Mercury Zephyr Z7 and it is a true survivor. I bought the car in 2007 with the hopes of keeping it forever – maybe I would drop a 302 in it or just keep it stock and enjoy one of the most economical classics available. But I got ill and now I’m losing my storage – so the Merc has got to go… Since the day I bought it, it has been garaged – and from the look it it, it has always been stored inside. As you can see from the photo – I keep it under a high quality car cover to keep the dust off. When I bought the car, it had about 56,130 miles and I think I’ve probably put 10 or 15 miles on it since I bought it. To the best of my knowledge, that mileage is true and original. I always started it and drove it around the block every couple months so its not like its been sitting uncared for. As you can see, the car looks great – not perfect, but really really nice – I would say that its got to be one of the nicest unrestored 1978 Mercury Zephyrs anywhere. THE PROS A true low mile classic – you can drive it to cruises and proudly hold your head up. It not only looks great – it doesn’t look like everything else there. Easy to work on – no complicated computer systems or fuel injection. A great car for your teenager! Economical to buy, service and operate. These are true 20-25 mpg cars on the road. Great condition – no cracks in the dash, no splits in the vinyl roof, body panels look in great shape, no rust in trunk, headliner isn’t falling down – overall really really nice. JUST (last month) installed a new battery. Starts and runs well. Probably could use to go through a fresh tank of gas to run great. Most state will allow you to tag and drive with antique/historic/classic tags – a HUGE insurance savings – my last quote for full coverage was $80/year. Service manuals seen in photo available at pickup time for $20.00 for both. VERY REASONABLE RESERVE. CONS: The front plastic skirting was loose so rather than letting it get damaged, I took it off and it is in the trunk – easy to reattach for someone who isn’t ill. There’s a small worn spot on the carpet (under the mat). The trunk lid torsion bar support system is unattached. It appears to be all there and just needs to be hooked up again. Broom handle support included at no charge. There’s a crack in the tail light (shown). I can’t/won’t ship so you need to come get it. Its located in NJ about 3 miles from the last exit south on the NJ turnpike.
